More About Mysterious Camera Teased By Canon Ambassador Andy Rouse (update: Olympus OM-D E-M1X?)

canon eos r

Update: we have now reason to believe that Andy Rouse is not referring to a Canon camera. According to the people we spoke to, it might be the Olympus OM-D E-M1X. Moreover, Andy Rouse seems to use a 300mm lens and we know that Olympus has highly regarded one. So, sorry folks, but likely there is no EOS R for sport and wildlife photography here.

Yesterday we reported that Canon Ambassador Andy Rouse is teasing a yet unreleased 30fps Canon camera on social networks.

There has obviously immediately been a lot of speculation about the camera Andy Rouse is referring to. The upcoming EOS-1D X Mark III was the most likely option. But we were all wrong.

In another post on Facebook, Andy Rouse states (emphasis mine):

Now there has been much interest and speculation about the kit I’m using. I will give you my reasons etc and details when I’m ready. But all I will say is that I made the decision to try something new purely for my photography. I needed kit that combined modern mirrorless technology with some cool stuff to help push my wildlife photography forwards. So right now I’m really enjoying myself so just enjoy the photography and I will update you all in good time!

Andy Rouse is clearly referring to a mirrorless system. Assuming that a Canon Ambassador who tested Canon camera prototypes in the past doesn’t use gear from another manufacturer, we have to conclude that he is field testing a new mirrorless camera. And since we do not think Canon will release an EOS M model with 30fps, this has to be a new full frame mirrorless EOS R camera.

We were expecting a high resolution EOS R camera next, not a sport oriented camera with 30fps. At least not yet. We might have been wrong., Time will tell soon.

The weird thing: is Canon teasing their next product? This would be the first time they tease a camera in this way as far as I know.

Stay tuned.

Canon Ambassador Teases New 30fps Canon DSLR On Social Networks

Top 10 Cameras canon rumors full frame mirrorless camera canon eos r pro eos r canon lens explorers of light

Canon Ambassador and renowned wild life photographer Andy Rouse teased a yet unreleased Canon camera on Twitter and Instagram.

In a post on Twitter he says he is “using some new kit. No questions yet as [he] won’t answer!!!

In another post on Instagram (below) he mentions a camera doing 30fps when he “had to take the motor drive speed down from 30 fps to 5fps as I was taking too many sharp shots“.

What camera is Andy Rouse referring to? If he is alluding to a yet unreleased Canon camera, and we think it’s likely he does, there a few possibilities:

  • It’s the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, already rumored to undergo field testing. Canon Ambassadors are for sure among the people who might test the EOS-1D X Mark III. The EOS-1D X Mark II does 16fps in Live View. Is the replacement almost doubling the fps?
  • It’s the next Canon APS-C flagship, i.e. the replacement for the EOS Canon EOS Canon EOS 80D and/or EOS 7D Mark II (there might be one camera to replace both). But an APS-C DSLR doing 30fps? Seems a bit of a stretch.
  • It’s a new full frame mirrorless camera in the EOS R lineup. A very sports or generally pro oriented EOS R model. Don’t think Canon might already put such a camera on the market. We expect Canon to announce a high resolution EOS R next.
  • It’s totally new camera in a new lineup we never heard anything about. It’s just possible.
  • It’s a camera from another company.

I don’t see other options.

Canon Having Two Professional Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras On Their Agenda?

canon eos r firmware update

After we reported that Canon’s next EOS R model will be a high resolution camera, there have been a lot of rumors following up. Now a new one surfaced.

It’s suggested Canon might have two professional oriented EOS R cameras on their agenda. One being the high resolution EOS R camera we were first to report about, the other being a more “sport oriented” camera with higher frame rates and “some advancements in sensor performance”.

Both cameras are said to get announced in 2020, which contradicts our information about Canon releasing the high resolution EOS R camera in Fall 2019. So far we do not have serious hints about the sport oriented EOS R.

Neither of these cameras is going to replace the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. The EOS-1D X Mark III is coming, and it will be in 2020 in time for the next Summer Olympics.

Take all this with a huge grain of salt, it’s a low ranked rumor and there are elements we can not confirm at the time being.

Next Canon EOS M Camera(s) Coming In August 2019 (EOS M500)?

Canon eos m5 Mark II

A followup to the rumor of upcoming EOS M cameras replacements surfaced over the web.

It’s suggested Canon might announce a replacement at least for the Canon EOS M5, while the EOS M6 seems not to be scheduled for replacement. Moreover, Canon might announce an EOS M model that’s below the EOS M50, the Canon EOS M500. Two new EF-M lenses might also be announced.

Take this with a grain of salt, and stay tuned.

More Information on Unreleased Canon Camera (EOS 90D/EOS 7D Mark III?)

eos 7d mark iii

Nokishita spotted a yet unreleased Canon camera registered at a wireless certification authority, the registration number is DS126801.

DS126801 seems to have WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, and the larger LP-E6N battery. This battery is used on the EOS 80D, EOS 7D Mark II, and the EOS R.

According to Nokishita, the camera named DS126801 is the same described as K437 in the programming code of the latest EOS Utility. Reading the code you learn that DS126801/K437 has a resolution of 6940×4640, which is approximately 32MP.

Is this the resolution of the next Canon APS-C camera?

K437 already leaked in June 2018, and a bit later we got a tip saying it could be the EOS 7D Mark III (all rumors) or EOS 90D. We had different rumors about the sensor resolution of K437, but a resolution of 6940×4640. i.e. 32MP leaked already in September 2018, so this new post by Nokishita is more a confirmation than a new rumor. Also note that recent rumors we got suggest Canon might replace both the EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II with one new camera.

So, is this the replacement for the EOS 80D and/or the EOS 7D Mark II? It’s possible. It’s less likely that K437 points to a new EOS R model or a full frame DSLR. If this is going to be a new Canon APS-C flagship then it gets a big resolution bump from the 24MP resolution of current Canon APS-C DSLRs.

Stay tuned.
