The Canon EOS R might have a killer feature: a touchbar selection feature with EVF display

Canon EOS R
What is this thing right of the EVF?

Have you noticed the small control “thing” just right of the EVF of the Canon EOS R in the image above?

We think the small “thing” immediately on the right of the EVF (Electronic View Finder) might be a touchbar selection option as we know it from Apple’s recent MacBook Pro. A touch sensitive selection button with back and forward list options. I guess what you’re about to select will be displayed in the EVF. This feature alone might make a huge difference, and differentiate the Canon EOS R from competitors.

What do you think, is this “small control thing” on the right of the Canon EOS R EVF what we think it is?

All leaked images and specs of the Canon EOS R, the new and very interesting RF lenses, and the other gear Canon is going to announce are displayed here. Announcement of the Canon EOS R and four new RF lenses is expected for September 5, 2018. Stay tuned.

This is the list of gear Canon is going to announce in September (Canon EOS R, R lenses, and more)

Nokishita posted what is likely the definitive list of new gear Canon is going to announce ahead of Photokina 2018, starting by next week.

  • Canon EOS R (the full frame mirrorless camera)
  • Canon EOS R with 24-105mm lens kit
  • Canon RF 35mm F/1.8 M IS
  • Canon RF 50mm F/1.2L USM
  • Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L USM
  • Canon RF 24-105mm F/4L USM
  • Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM
  • Canon EF 400 mm F/2.8L III
  • Canon EF 600 mm F/4L III
  • R adapter (please note: there may be three adapters. M.ADAP R, M.ADAP R ND, M.ADAP R PL. At the time being we are not sure what the different codes/names mean)
  • PD – E1 is also included in the accessory list

As you can see, a pretty decent gear list, and a cool lens line-up. Good to know that Canon will start with some interesting lenses for their new system. The new Canon EOS R system is getting three L lenses from the beginning. Good move Canon!

Is the Canon RF 28-70mm F/2L a world’s first? And how big will this lens be? It has to be a massive piece of glass having f/2 for a FF sensor. I think it’s a very smart move by Canon to announce the Canon EOS R along with a 50mm f/1.2L, and with two classic zoom lenses for FF cameras, the afore mentioned RF 28-70mm F/2L and the RF 24-105mm F/4L. Not sure what the “M” in RF 35mm F/1.8 M IS means but a fast 35mm lens rounds up very well the initial R mount lens line-up.

The Canon EOS R was rumored to have IBIS (In Camera Image Stabilisation). I wonder if this still makes sense given that one lens appears to have image stabilisation (IS). However, IBIS is still an option I’d not exclude.

The Canon EOS R might obfuscate Nikon’s Z6 and Z7, alone for the initial lens offering. Add to this that most likely the Canon EOS R will shoot 4K video with Dual Pixel AF and you may see a real winner here.

I am also very happy that eventually Canon is releasing a fast prime for the EOS M system, the 32mm f/1.4. This was one needed and will be part of my EOS M kit asap.

Announcements will start on September 5, 2018. Exciting times ahead.

Stay tuned!

Upcoming Canon Full Frame Mirrorless Camera to be named Canon EOS R?

Canon Eos M50 Mark Ii

Things are heating up ahead of next week’s Canon announcement. For those who have been on a different planet for the last weeks: rumors have it that on September 4/5 Canon might announce (at least) one of the two full frame mirrorless cameras the company has on schedule. Please note that you may be very disappointed by next week’s announcement. More about that later or tomorrow.

After our very basic specification list for Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera, Canon Rumors got some more bits, the most interesting being the supposed moniker of Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera, and that Canon might introduce a new mount type.

  • Name: Canon EOS R
  • RF Mount (New mount, possible EF compatibility?)
  • No reports of new “RF” lenses being announced alongside the body.
  • Similar ergonomics to the EOS M50
  • Slightly larger body than the EOS M50
  • Will compete with the Sony A7 III & Nikon Z6
  • 24mp or 28mp (Two different reports)

All in all nothing that’s not at least plausible. A new mount type has been rumored many times. If this Canon full frame mirrorless camera is going to compete with the Nikon Z6, then it hardy will be a professional-oriented MILC. Is Canon still scared to cannibalise their DSLR market?

All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.

Stay tuned.

Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens for EOS M System Gets Another Mention, Announcement Soon

Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM EF-M 22mm Canon Lenses

Nokishita suggests that Canon might very soon announce the Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens for the Canon EOS M system. A welcome addition to the EF-M lens lineup in any case. This will be the fastest Canon lens for the EOS M system.

A new and fast prime lens for the Canon EOS M system was rumored since a while and an announcement expected. A much needed lens for the EOS M system, in my opinion. So far the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake lens was the only Canon offering if you wanted a fast prime with auto-focus. Other manufacturer make manual focusing lenses up to f/1.2 with native EF-M mount.
