Rumor: A Canon Entry Level DSLR for CP+?

Canon

Canon may soon announce a new, entry level DSLR, which most probably means they will announce it at CP+ (2/13-16). The DSLR that’s going to be announced is said to be positioned below the Rebel SL1/EOS 100D, and to be a brand new model. The announcement appears to be quite likely to occur for the CP+ show.

The same rumor states that there will be 2 more DSLRs that will be announced this year, one of them should be the replacement of the EOS 7D, the other, third one is not specified.

No specs nor other information for the entry level and the other DSLRs.

Rumor: No Canon EOS 7D Replacement at CP+ (and new tidbits about high end DSLR with hybrid viewfinder)

EOS 7D Replacement EOS 7D Replacement

We are getting closer to CP+ (2/13-16), and rumors start coming in again.

We have been told (thanks) that Canon will neither announce the replacement for the EOS 7D, nor their new, rumored APS-C flagship at CP+.

We have also been told (thanks #2) that the new, high-end DSLR with hybrid viewfinder Canon is rumored to work on will have an APS-C sensor. When previously reporting about this I couldn’t be sure about the sensor size. So, this DSLR could be sort of a replacement for the EOS 7D. I write “sort of” because I have been told that this camera shouldn’t be seen as the successor of the 7D, instead it is a completely new entry in Canon’s APS-C line-up. The name that was suggested is EOS-A1.

The high-end DSLR is said to have a megapixel count that matches the highest resolution sensors out there (but no word about the real resolution). The DSLR is optimized for the best possible still and video performance, video is said to be the best ever seen on a DSLR. But this is the most important information: the camera is said to have a hybrid viewfinder, i.e. it combines optical viewfinder and electronic viewfinder. The electronic viewfinder would be for video (according to the sources). If the suggestion about the sensor size is reliable, then the hybrid viewfinder enabled DSLR most probably is Canon’s new APS-C flagship.

What to expect for CP+, if something at all? A replacement for the Powershot G1 X is murmured, or there could be new Rebels/EOS xxxD cameras, i.e. replacements for the Rebel T5i/EOS 700D and/or the Rebel SL1/EOS 100D.

Canon Powershot G1X Mark II Specification May Have Leaked

This was posted to Chinese Xitek forum (translated) back in November 2013 by a user claiming these are the specs of the successor of the Canon PowerShot G1 X, the “G1 X Mark II” (unusual moniker for a compact camera):

  • Same design as the G1X, with a slightly longer lens
  • DIGIC 6 Image Processor
  • 24 – 120mm f/2.8-5.8 lens
  • 20.2MP 1.5″ CMOS sensor
  • New optical zoom viewfinder with better image quality
  • 3.0″ LCD touch screen with 922,000 dots

The camera could indeed be announced for CP+.

Take this with a big grain of salt, although it is true that in the past there have been leaks on Xitek.

The Powershot G1 X is somewhat unique in the overall Canon line-up. The G1 X features a sensor that is 20% smaller than the sensors Canon uses in APS-C DSLRs, and it is a bit larger than the 4/3  size used by Olympus and Panasonic, and it is more than 4x the size of the Fujifilm X10‘s sensor.

Canon Rumor: New Canon APS-C Flagship On Its Way?

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

Is the successor of the EOS 7D on its way?

A new rumor suggests that Canon may use the concomitance of the Winter Olympics in Sochi (2/7-2/23) and CP+ (2/13-2/16) to announce various new products, among which there will be the replacement for the EOS 7D (price & specs).

The rumor states that speed, auto-focus and high ISO performance are the key elements where Canon wants feedback from their testers (apparently prototypes are out in the wild). The 7D successor should have a rugged build an a high fps. No word about the resolution, just that it will be over 20MP.

My take: Take it with a grain of salt. EOS 7D Mark II rumors have gone wild and sometimes contradictory in the last months. According to my sources there will be an APS-C DSLR positioned above the EOS 7D/70D but it will not be a “7D Mark II”. Canon’s next, new APS-C flagship is said to have a new naming scheme (and groundbreaking features). That fits with other rumors I got, saying Canon is working on a general revamping of their DSLR line-up, one source stated it is “the biggest change in Canon’s history“. I have also been told that there are prototypes undergoing testing.

The latest spec list I got (already published in the past) that could refer to the 7D successor:

  • ~24MP sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Auto-Focus system similar to the EOS 5D Mark III (61 points), possibly the same as 5D3
  • High frame rate, 10-12 fps
  • “high grade” weather sealing, like Canon’s professional DSLRs
  • Dual Digic V+ processor
  • Single card slot
  • WiFi & GPS
  • Innovative video features
  • Price around $2000
  • Very good ISO performance

Only time will tell.

Canon Powershot SX60 HS HS Due In Summer 2014?

Canon Powershot SX50 HS

A somewhat vague rumor surfaced on the web stating that the successor of the Powershot SX50 HS may be announced sometime in spring and be available for shipping in the summer 2014. The camera will most probably be named SX60 HS. No specs or other information. Speculation goes to the point that the SX60 HS could feature a 100x zoom. A pertinent patent appeared some time ago, though I do not think the SX60 HS will have such a crazy zoom range.

The Powershot SX50 HS is a popular bridge camera, and indeed it is due for replacement.
