More Canon Medium Format Tidbits

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

More Canon medium format tidbits, take them with a grain of salt. It appears Canon is working to have a medium format system and that they will not announce the camera before the system is developed enough to come with lenses and more. That’s to say Canon will develop lenses for a new mount system (a larger EF mount) – the new mount could be named EF-L and an adapter for the EF mount could also be on the way.

The Canon medium format camera could be announced at Photokina 2014.

Rumor: Canon Prototyping Different Sensors for the EOS 7D Mark II (24MP, 61 points AF)

EOS 7D Mark II
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

I got word that Canon is testing two different sensor configurations for the upcoming EOS 7D Mark II. As previously murmured there is a 20MP sensor as a possible candidate, and also a 24MP sensor that is undergoing field testing. Both sensors have the Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology Canon introduced with the [shoplink 14246]Canon EOS 70D[/shoplink]. The source said that Canon wants to step up resolution for the 7D Mark II to distinguish it from the feature-rich EOS 70D, but that low light/high ISO performance is a priority. This spec list was given to me:

  • ~24MP sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Auto-Focus system similar to the [shoplink 2431]EOS 5D Mark III[/shoplink] (61 points), possibly the same as 5D3
  • High frame rate, 10-12 fps
  • “high grade” weather sealing, like Canon’s professional DSLRs
  • Dual Digic V+ processor
  • Single card slot
  • WiFi & GPS
  • Innovative video features
  • Price around $2000
  • Very good ISO performance

As for the last point of the list above, the ISO performance: I heard from different sources that ISO performance is a priority issue for Canon, and that they aim to make an APS-C DSLR that sets a new quality standard in the industry. ISO performance on the 7D Mark II could thus be on the same level as Canon’s full-frame DSLRs. And it is not the first time that a 24MP sensor is rumored. As mentioned earlier, the EOS 7D Mark II will not be released in 2013, one of the reasons being that Canon wants to see how well the EOS 70D will get accepted by the market.

All this is very interesting. The EOS 70D is Canon’s new APS-C flagship, a camera with features that easily surpass the previous flagship, the [shoplink 337]EOS 7D[/shoplink]. If Canon aims to establish the EOS 7D Mark II as the new APC-S flagship, then they will have to pack features in it, features that change things in real world. As much as we always have to take rumors with a grain of salt, the spec list above makes sense to me. I think Canon can not avoid to pack a higher resolution sensor in the EOS 7D Mark II if they want to establish it in its own category. A more sophisticated AF system, weather sealing, high fps, and WiFi and/or GPS functionality are all more than welcome, but without a new sensor a lot of people might question if they should go for a 7D2 instead of the 70D.

Canon Stepping Into Medium Format to Grow?

Rumors have word that Canon may step into medium format to expand their offering. The shrinking sales figures for compact camera may the motivation. It appears Canon might have invested concretely in a major European manufacturer for medium format digital cameras – rumors are mentioning Phase One. Canon stepping into medium format could open interesting scenarios for the future. However, take this rumor with a grain of salt.

Rumor: New Tidbits About the Canon EOS 7D Mark II

[shoplink 14738 ebay]7D Mark II[/shoplink]

Another Canon EOS 7D Mark II rumor surfaced on the web. It says that the 7D II will sport a sensor that is a derivative of the sensor featured on the [shoplink 14246]Canon EOS 70D[/shoplink]. Same Dual Pixel CMOS AF but the sensor is optimized for higher signal transmission speed and video image quality. Not much has changed for the murmured specs:

  • ~20MP APS C
  • 12 FPS possible – target is 10
  • Video quality – ‘limited by marketing’
  • ISO 100-25600
  • ‘New’ AF system

The final specs will be set after Canon has seen how the EOS 70D is accepted from customers/the market. The rumor also states that the sensor of the 7D II could easily beat the C100 and C500, but will be crippled down to not do so. Announcement date is still said to be in 2014.

Rumor: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS Replacement Set to be Announced Soon?

EF 100-400mm

It appears as if Canon might soon announce a new EF 100-400mm lens. The production of the [shoplink 124]EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS[/shoplink] may be “coming to an end soon”. The new 100-400mm should go into production at the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014. The rumor also suggests that Canon will not starting production of the new 100-400mm until the production figures for the EF 200-400 f/4L IS 1.4x (Amazon | Adorama | B&H) are not in line with demand.

Rumor: First Picture Of Sigma 24-70mm f/2 Lens Leaked

Sigma 24-70mm f/2

Take it with a grain of salt: I can’t say if this pic is authentic. It appears that the first picture of Sigma’s rumored 24-70mm f/2 DG OS HSM lens for full-frame DSLRs may have leaked on the web. I reported yesterday that Sigma is supposed to make a full-frame lens that is as innovative as the company’s [shoplink 14551]18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM[/shoplink] lens for APS-C sensors, that’ s a lens with constant f/2 and a zoom range 24-70mm. If the picture above is real, then the announcement shouldn’t be too far away. Kudos Sigma for another revolutionary lens!
