New Canon Big Megapixel and Medium Format Rumors

Canon Big Megapixel

After a while a new rumor about the mighty Canon big megapixel camera. Rumors say that the 44.7MP camera is undergoing field testing. However, it appears that when used in 4k mode the batteries are draining way to fast. Canon is therefore still working on the sensor development and the software of the camera. The big MP camera could be announced (development announcement) late 2013 or beginning of 2014.

Another rumor concerns Canon’s plans to step into the medium format segment, and it appears Canon is serious about that. Canon could announce a medium format camera at next Photokina, availability will hardly be before 2015. Canon’s medium format strategy could imply an alliance with an already consolidated manufacturer, a joint venture so to speak.

Take all this with a grain of salt. There have been other big megapixel rumors in the past and so far they were either wrong (concerning the announcement) or very vague (concerning features). The MF rumor is pretty recent, and it sounds plausible that Canon would like to step into this market.

Canon EOS M2 Leaks in DPP Documentation

The Canon EOS M

Could this mean we will soon see an announcement? Hopefully. A user of the dpreview forum downloaded the latest version of DPP and found what follows:

Checking under the help section on Lighting Optimizer and look what is found:

If the shooting result is dark or the contrast is low, you can use the Auto Lighting Optimizer function to auto-correct the brightness and contrast, and obtain a more pleasant image. You can also change the settings of the image shot with the camera’s Auto Lighting Optimizer function. This function is compatible only with RAW images shot with EOS-1D X, EOS-1D C, EOS-1D Mark IV, EOS 5D Mark III, EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 6D, EOS 7D, EOS 70D, EOS 60D, EOS 50D, EOS REBEL T5i/700D, EOS REBEL SL1/100D, EOS REBEL T4i/650D, EOS REBEL T3i/600D, EOS REBEL T2i/550D, EOS REBEL T1i/500D, EOS REBEL T3/1100D, EOS M2 and EOS M.

Not much fantasy with the naming but definitely a new EOS M on the way. :)

More Sign of an Upcoming New Canon EOS M Camera

Canon Deals

Here at Canon Watch and on other dedicated sites we got emails confirming the upcoming announcement of new Canon EOS M cameras. As previously reported, there will be two new bodies, one entry level and another one more feature-rich or pro-oriented. A few days ago rumors surfaced suggesting that Canon could announce at least one new EOS M body (the entry level) by the end of this week, though as far as wednesday I did not get any serious confirmation for that.

What we know: One of the two new EOS M bodies will feature the same outstanding 20MP sensor of the [shoplink 14246]Canon EOS 70D[/shoplink]. But that’s all. Other report that Canon will also announce an EF-M 55-250mm IS lens when they will announce the first body. I did not get any rumor about that but such a lens makes sense and would fit well in the EF-M lens lineup.

The still excellent EOS M is available at heavily discounted prices. Look out for bargains at the following links: [shopcountry 6091]

New Canon Gear Set To Be Announced This Week (next EOS M)?

French site photoblogue posted a short note saying that there will be a Canon announcement this week. There have been rumors in the past pointing to an announcement in September, mainly referring to the successor of the Canon EOS M [shoplink 6091](price & specs)[/shoplink] and to new lenses. Stay tuned, if there is something that’s upcoming I will report here. Have a great day!

[shopcountry 8892]

Photorumors compiled a list of the lenses that Sigma could possibly announce in 2014. Take everything with a grain of salt, though there will be new Sigma lenses next year. The list:

  • Sigma 24-105mm f/4 OS
  • Sigma 24-70mm f/2 OS HSM
  • Sigma 300mm f/2.8 OS
  • Sigma 400mm f/2.8 OS
  • Sigma 500mm f/4 OS
  • Sigma 600mm f/4 OS
  • Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG OS
  • Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG
  • a new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens is also a possibility

Would be great if Sigma can deliver more outstanding lenses like the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM [shoplink 14551](price & specs)[/shoplink]. Let’s hope and wait. In the meantime you could like to read about the interview with the engineer that designed the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses.

Moreover, German site Valuetech reports a rumor related to an upcoming Sig,a 24-105mm OS lens. This is a very interesting rumour. Since Canon will stop the production of the highly popular [shoplink 230]Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM (price & specs)[/shoplink] lens, it makes sense for Sigma to step in. Valuetech writes:

We’ve been told that lens manufacturer Sigma is close to announce a 24-105mm f/4 lens for fullframe DSLRs (the announcement could been expected some time in 2013), which might be a good replacement for the EoL Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS. Right now it’s not for sure if we’ll see an optical image stabilizer (OS) in it as well as if it will become a C-, A- or S-series lens regarding to Sigmas very own nomenclature.
