We have been told that Canon is interested in GoPro’s business and might make a move to step into or get in some way a hold on GoPro.

For Canon it might be especially interesting to have access to GoPro’s intellectual assets. This means

  • expertise in app development
  • online features
  • know how about video compression
  • know how about digital video stabilisation

The suggestion comes from a new source. However, it makes sense. Despite a patent we found years ago, Canon never entered the action camera market.

A High Resolution Canon EOS R Is Coming 2019, But It Won’t Be What’s Suggested

We broke the news back in October telling that the next Canon EOS R model will be a high resolution camera. This was later indirectly confirmed also by a Canon exec. The last bit we got suggested this camera might be announced during Q1 2019, before Photokina 2019. We also know (again: from Canon execs during conferences and interviews.) what RF-mount lenses Canon is going to announce in 2019.

A new rumor surfaced suggesting the high resolution EOS R model we leaked in October might have a sensor with a resolution beyond 75MP. Such a camera is said to be announced in the 2nd half of 2019. While we agree that the EOS 5Ds series might be ditched for a mirrorless offering, we do not think a resolution beyond 75MP is anything we will see soon on the consumer market. Canon is obviously perfectly able to manufacture such sensors but launching a consumer camera with such a resolution is highly unlikely. We were told on multiple occasions that the Canon EOS R that’s going to be announced next year will have a resolution around 50MP.

The rumor mills are going a bit stray as of lately. Most of the potential EOS R related rumors have already been anticipated by Canon in interviews (which is rather untypical for Canon), and there is very little left to speculate about. Never the less, we will see a lot of rumors in the next months, all repeating the same about new RF lenses and a high resolution EOS R model.

Canon Working on a Ultra Wide Angle Lens For The EOS R System?

We already know that Canon is set to release more RF mount lenses in 2019.

This was clearly stated by Canon itself during conferences and interviews. Canon let us know that they will provide what is usually called the “Holy Trinity” of full frame lenses. This means we can expect an RF 16-35mm f/2.8L, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, and an RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. So far so good.

Latest murmurings have it that Canon might release an RF lens that’s wider than 16mm. It’s suggested that an RF 12-35mm f/2.8L and an RF 14-35mm f/2.8L lens are already undergoing testing.

It’s a bit a stretch to suppose Canon will release a 12-35mm or a 14-35mm lens instead of a 16-35mm. However, it’s entirely possible so we have to wait to see. For the time being we can only be sure that Canon will release three more lenses for the Canon EOS R system in 2019. The rest is speculation.

Latest murmuring on the web has it that Canon might have abandoned the development of a DSLR in favour of a mirrorless option.

The source of the rumor suggest that Canon ditched the replacement for the EOS 5Ds (R) in favour of a mirrorless option. This fits well with a rumor we got some weeks ago suggesting that the next EOS R model will feature a high resolution sensor in the range of the EOS 5Ds. A hint in this direction was also given by a Canon exec during an interview. It’s indeed very likely that Canon will release a high resolution full frame mirrorless camera instead of a DSLR.

For the time being the rumor mill is going a bit astray, struggling to get news. A lot of what we can expect 2019 has already been disclosed in interviews given by Canon execs. Even the future RF mount lenses roadmap has been disclosed early, which is unusual for Canon.

Nokishita posted a new list of camera codes used in certification authorities.

Note that both DS126751 and DS126761 are either DSLRs or full frame mirrorless cameras. One might be the replacement for the EOS 5Ds(R) or the rumored high resolution EOS R model. It’s suggested that both models have a full frame sensor, either in a DSLR or a MILC. However, DS126761 seems to refer to a more entry level oriented camera and thus may well point to the Canon EOS 80D or Rebel SL2 replacements (maybe something got lost in translation?). Both are expected to be announced in the first half of 2019. P2355 refers to a PowerShot camera and might be the PowerShot G7X Mark III. No signs of the EOS 7D Mark III here.
