Latest Canon EOS R3 Firmware Update (ver. 1.2) Has Been Pulled (mode dial issues)

canon eos r3 firmware sample picture user manual

It seems Canon already pulled the latest Canon EOS R3 firmware update, version 1.2.

User DrJohnEvs in the DPReview forum writes (emphasis mine):

I installed v1.2 a few days ago and all worked well.

I noticed last night that it had been withdrawn from Canon UK site.

This morning I contacted CPS UK. I have just received a reply saying there is an issue and recommended I go back to v1.1.1

The issue is that if you have v1.2 on your camera and then perform a reset the mode dial does not work correctly and you cannot change between Tv Av etc.

Anyone experienced similar issues?

Nikon might announce their next Z-series mirrorless camera soon. Edit: we got some new intel and it seems the announcement will likely happen in August 2022.

As How2Fly (often right in the past) writes on Twitter, Nikon might be close to announce a new Z camera. According to How2Fly it might be the Nikon Z 8 (rumored to already undergo testing) or the Nikon Z 6 III.

Nikon will announce a NEW camera next month, maybe Z8 (being testing already) or Z6 III.

Canon Q2 2022 Financial Results Published (RF lenses did the job)

canon q2 2022

Here are the Canon Q2 2022 financial results. RF mount lenses led to a double-digit sales growth.

Says Canon about the business in general:

As for the second quarter, due to things such as the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict and Shanghai’s COVID lockdown, and accelerating global inflation, there is growing uncertainty about the future direction of the global economy. Despite this,
demand for our products remained firm. That said, the impact from Shanghai’s COVID lockdown was larger than expected, and we were unable to produce products in the quantity we planned for in the second quarter. Though this will
impact sales in the third quarter, we were able to expand sales in the second quarter by taking advantage of our inventory.
Net sales increased by 13.3% to 998.8 billion yen, or nearly 1 trillion yen. And we achieved our sixth consecutive quarter of net sales growth. As for profit, although the rise in material and logistical costs continue to affect us, in addition to adjusting prices, we raised the ratio of sales of high price range products, such as full-frame cameras and medium- to high-speed color MFDs.
Additionally, by controlling the rise in expenses even while sales were increasing, we increased operating profit by 27.4%, significantly raising it to 98.5 billion yen.

From Canon’s documentation, regarding the imaging business in Q2 2022:

As for the Imaging Business Unit, unit sales of interchangeable-lens digital cameras were below those of the same period of the previous year due to the shortage of products supply. However, unit sales of mirrorless cameras were above those of the same period of the previous year due to strong demand for the full-frame mirrorless cameras including the EOS R5 and EOS R6 and the favorable reviews of the new EOS R7. Unit sales increased significantly owing to strong sales of RF-series interchangeable lenses, which expanded the product lineup. As for network cameras, sales increased significantly mainly as a result of strengthening sales in response to diversifying market needs in addition to the recovery of products supply. As for professional video production equipment, sales of Cinema EOS-series including the new EOS R5 C, professional video cameras and broadcast
lenses, were strong. These factors resulted in total sales for the business unit of ¥200.9 billion, a year-on-year increase of 18.3%, while income before income taxes increased by 57.5% year-on-year to ¥32.9 billion mainly as a result of improved profitability due to an enhanced product mix. Sales for the combined first six months of the year totaled ¥358.1 billion, a year-on-year increase of 12.4%, while income before income taxes totaled ¥46.6 billion, a year-on-year increase of 19.7%

Ten Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II Lenses Used To Build The Huntsman Telescope

Canon EF 400mm

Remember the Dragonfly Telephoto Array? Once more, commercial Canon telephoto lenses are used to build an array to observe and study galaxies and other astronomical objects.

The Canon lenses used to build the new array are the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II. The new array, named Huntsman Telescope, is made by Macquarie Unversity with support from Canon, as Australian Photography reports:

Located at the Siding Spring Observatory near Coonabarabran, NSW, the Huntsman will perform deep southern sky surveys to provide researchers with understanding about galaxy formation and evolution; how galaxies form, how they grow, how they engage with structures that surround them, and what happens when galaxies collide.

Canon says the second-generation Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L lens was chosen for the task as it has ‘superb’ anti-reflection properties, owing to one of the first applications of Canon’s nano-fabricated coatings. Each lens is connected to a red-coloured camera which is then individually connected to one of 10 mini computers.

The coated lens array chosen for the Huntsman contrasts to a conventional mirror telescope, whose imperfectly polished surface can introduce subtle errors that ruin faint, extended structures surrounding galaxies.

Firmware Updates For Canon EOS R3 , EOS R5 And EOS R6 Released

canon eos r3 review canon cameras eos r1

Canon released new firmware update for three EOS R cameras, the EOS R3, EOS R5 and EOS R6.

The firmware updates started to be available on Canon’s Asian sites, so we link Canon Singapore for the downloads.

Canon EOS R5 Firmware Version 1.6.0 (download) incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

1. Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard/High] to the menu for movie recording. When [High] is selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when the temperature of the camera body and card become high, which may allow for longer movie recording than before, depending on the shooting conditions. Note that the temperature of the bottom surface of the camera may increase at this time.
2. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images.
3. Enhances the performance of “Movie Digital IS”. It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens.
4. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R6 firmware Version 1.6.0 (download) incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

1. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images.
2. Enhances the performance of “Movie Digital IS”. It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens.
3. Fixes minor issues.

Canon EOS R3 firmware Version 1.2.0 (download) incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:

2. Adds the ability to select “FHD 239.76 fps/200.00 fps” in “High frame rate.”
3. 1- Adds the ability for in camera “Depth compositing” during “Focus bracketing.”
2- Adds Focus bracketing and depth compositing with a flash (Speedlite EL-1).
4. Adds the ability of time-lapse movie recording. Note that the time-lapse movie setting is retained even if the camera enters the Auto Power Off state before starting time-lapse movie recording.
5. Adds the ability of Cloud RAW processing functionality. RAW processing with the latest image processing technology is possible. This is a paid service that requires the purchase of a Canon Imaging App Service Plan, which will be available starting July 25, 2022.
6. Adds the ability to convert multiple HEIF images into multiple JPEG images..
7. Adds the ability to set [Still Image Crop/Aspect] to [Custom Controls]. The assigned button can be used to switch between crop and aspect ratio.
8. Adds the ability to crop and resize images during transfer to an FTP server.
9. 802.1X authentication/WPA2-Enterprise now supports the PKCS#12 certificate format.
10. Adds an electronic shutter sound to be played when the mechanical shutter or electronic 1st-curtain is set.
11. Enhances the performance of “Movie Digital IS”. It stabilizes the image when taking selfies or walking shots using a wide-angle lens.
12. Adds [Auto Power Off Temp.: Standard/High] to the menu for still shooting.
13. Fixes an issue, which displays Error Code 70 on the camera, that may occur, in rare instances, when the [Disp. performance] setting is set to [Smooth].
14. Fixes minor issues.
