Is The Canon EOS R100 The Next MILC Canon Will Announce?

canon rumors canon news eos r7 mark ii canon eos rv

In June we reported that Canon might release a more entry level mirrorless camera with RF mount, the Canon EOS R100. It seems our rumor got a confirmation. These are the specs we were told and reported back in June:

  • 24.2 million pixel APS-C CMOS sensor
  • 4k 30p 8bit
  • There is no HDR PQ mode like the EOS R10
  • 14fps continuous shooting speed
  • 3.0-inch 1.04 million dot vari-angle monitor
  • Scheduled to be released Q1 or Q2 2023

Although the source of the rumor is not mentioning the “EOS R100” moniker, it might well be this camera. The source of the rumor states:

Canon’s next APS-C camera will be a small form factor “vlogger”, which we’re told will be close to the Canon EOS M6 Mark II in design.

Confirmed specifications are still relatively unreliable, but you can be sure that it will shoot 4K at 60fps and that there will likely be a 120fps mode.

[…] been told that the camera will use a different kind of vari-angle LCD screen.

That’s all for the time being. We are rather confident that the rumor refers to the same camera we reported in June, the Canon EOS R100. Time will tell.

Any idea?

In their recent Q2 2022 financial results, Canon added a Q&A file to the documentation. Some interesting insights can be found.

From Canon’s Q2 2022 Q&A (emphasis mine):

Q1. What is your outlook for the external environment in 2023 and the sustainability of your growth going forward?

A1. Even if production around the world recovers smoothly, it will probably take around a year for the inflation caused by the shortage of goods, which arose from supply-chain disruptions etc., to subside naturally. We expect to continue growing as we have transformed our business portfolio and will actively invest to further enhance our products

[…]

Q5. What is your outlook for the camera market going forward? Additionally, will you continue to offer both Mirrorless and DSLR cameras?

A5. The camera market has largely bottomed out at its current size. Going forward, we expect the professional and advanced amateur segment to expand further and that products will become more highly developed. Accordingly, we expect the overall market to grow from now on. As for DSLR cameras, we will continue to supply products as long as there is demand

Canon EOS R7 Review – One Of The Best Cameras Canon Makes (PetaPixel)

canon eos r7 review canon firmware updates

Here is a Canon EOS R7 review that highlights the many advanced features of Canon’s EOS R model with APS-C sensor.

At a glance:

  • 32.5MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
  • 4K60 10-Bit Video, HDR-PQ & C-Log 3
  • 30 fps E. Shutter, 15 fps Mech. Shutter

  • Sensor-Shift 5-Axis Image Stabilization
  • Dual UHS-II Memory Card Slots
  • Multi-Function Shoe, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

PetaPIxel posted their Canon EOS R7 review. There are some criticism to the ergonomics but overall, the EOS R7 appears to be a very capable mirrorless camera. From their conclusion (emphasis mine):

Calling the Canon EOS R7 one of Canon’s best cameras is a lofty claim, but I think it’s still deserved. We are talking about a $1,500 camera that can get away with creating pretty much anything at a high level. It feels pretty nice in the hand, has weather sealing, plus incorporates many of the company’s latest software features inside. The 32.5-megapixel APS-C sensor with in-body image stabilization is capable of taking some beautifully rendered images with room for cropping and composing in post. It’s shockingly fast in both frames per second and autofocus, making it a lot easier to come away with keepers.

While not touched on in this review, even the video shooting is ready for assignment with 10-bit 4K 60p footage that it can record, which is oversampled from 7K, is really nice and the ability to harvest as much dynamic range as possible with Canon Log 3 is also possible.
