Why use a Canon EOS R as a webcam? Canon recently released a pretty cool free software, Canon EOS Webcam Utility Beta. Unfortunately, for the time being it’s available only for Windows computer.
However, Marius Masalar published a short and easy to follow tutorial about how to use an EOS R as an external webcam on a Mac OS X system. Following Marius how-to you’ll be able to use your EOS R as a high-quality webcam, even in the latest versions of Zoom that has disabled virtual webcams.

An Australian camera retailer lists a Canon EOS R5 price that doesn’t seem at all to be a placeholder.
The Canon EOS R5 is listed at 10,499 Australian Dollars, which converts to approximate US$6254.
Too much? Not sure given the impressing features the Canon EOS R5 is packed with (all EOS R5 information is listed here), including 8K video.
An updated report about the EOS R5 specifications can be found here. Unfortunately it seems that the COVID-19 pandemic might delay release and shipment of the R5.

In an unexpected and really nice move, a few weeks ago Canon released the free EOS Webcam Utility Beta software to help homeworkers and others who needed a webcam because of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Kudos Canon!
DPReview published a short review of the EOS Webcam Utility Beta. They write:
In the end, I have to applaud Canon for making the effort to create this software quickly enough to allow locked-down workers to take advantage of it. It’s free, it’s valuable, and it could really benefit a ton of people out there with minimal effort. We find ourselves hopeful that more videoconferencing software will be supported in the near future.
