Canon Empowers the Future as a Top U.S. Patent Recipient and Innovative Leader

Company Also Rises to Secure Second Place in New Ultimate Patent Ownership Analysis

MELVILLE, NY, January 15, 2019 – Ranking third in the number of U.S. patents awarded in 2018, Canon Inc., the parent company to Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, proves it continues to empower future leaders with new and innovative technology solutions. While overall number of U.S. patents awarded is down, according to results issued by the leading producer of global patent databases IFI CLAIMS Patent Services, Canon maintained its standing in the top five spots by being awarded a total of 3,056 patents in 2018. 

This marks the 33rd consecutive year that Canon ranked in the top five for number of U.S. patents awarded and the 14th consecutive year that Canon was the top recipient of U.S. patents among Japanese companies.

Additionally, and new this year to IFI’s patent analysis, Canon ranks second in Ultimate Patent Ownership. This separate analysis tabulates the world’s largest current patent holders, which includes parent companies and their subsidiaries. Unlike IFI’s annual Top U.S. Patent Recipients*, the broader ranking measures the size of a patent owner’s global portfolio based on the number of active patent families around the world covering a single invention. Canon secured the second spot, outranking IBM, with 34,905 active patent families.

Canon Dominates DSLR, Mirrorless and Lens Market In Japan

BCN posted their annual “BCN Awards” and look who is ranked on top for the mirrorless and DSLR market. It appears to be true that there is life in the old dog.

Canon ranks first for DSLR and mirrorless market shares in 2018.

DSLR market shares:

  1. Canon – 57.4% share
  2. Nikon – 39.3% share
  3. Ricoh – 3.1% share

Mirrorless market share:

  1. Canon – 31.6% share
  2. Olympus – 23.5% share
  3. Sony – 22.7% share

Canon’s success in the mirrorless market is mostly because of the commercial success of the EOS M50, and also to some minor degree thanks to the new EOS R. It’s interesting to see that Nikon doesn’t show up among the first three players in the MILC market. Surprisingly the so much touted Sony mirrorless systems are not getting that much love in Japan.

Nikon still ranks first for compact cameras with 31.5%, followed by Canon with 29.8% and Sony with 11.9%.

Canon also ranks first for sold lenses with 20.7%, followed by Sigma with 15.7% and Nikon with 13.7%.

Below you see how Canon’s market share in the mirrorless market evolved since 2016.

Not bad for a company so heavily criticised. I’m curios to know how much market share Canon will gain this year because they are clearly headed to lead the market.

Canon Set To Shrink APS-C DSLR Line-up, One Model To Replace Both EOS 7D2 and 80D?

Both the Canon EOS 90D and the EOS 7D Mark III are somewhat overdue, and still no signs pointing either to specs or an announcement date.

Given the popularity of the Canon EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II we’d expect that Canon is working on a replacement for both. But this might not be the case.

Although ranked low, Canon Rumors reports a rumor suggesting that

[…] the APS-C DSLR lineup will shrink in model numbers and that the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II cameras will be amalgamated into one DSLR body. The EOS 77D will remain the DSLR above the Rebels […]

This is not the first time rumors suggest a shake up in Canon’s APS-C DSLR offering. Given how meticulously Canon segments its market offering we tend to think this rumor is not reliable. On the other hand, it’s the mirrorless age and Canon might well decide to shift some of their camera offerings to mirrorless technology.

Personally, I’m a huge fan of the EOS 80D, which happens to be my preferred walk around and travel camera, and therefore hope Canon will announce a replacement soon. The EOS 80D is a kind of camera where Canon got a lot of things right, and a delivers a lot of tech for the bucks.

Canon EOS R Model With IBIS And 100MP In The Pipeline?

The lack of IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) on the Canon EOS R stirred a lot of discussion. Along with the “no dual card slot” it’s the most mentioned shortcoming of Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera.

No wonder that most rumors about future EOS R models revolve around IBIS, especially since a series of interviews with Canon execs killed a lot of potential EOS R rumors.

As most of you likely know, we expect Canon to announce at least one more EOS R model this year, and according to our sources it will be a high resolution model which could replace the the EOS 5Ds(R) lineup.

Latest from the rumor outlets has it that Canon has an EOS R model with IBIS and a 100MP sensor in the pipeline. Canon Rumors seems to be pretty confident about the fact that Canon will release an EOS R model with the specs listed above, though we will not see “such a camera until 2020”. It’s also unclear when Canon will embrace IBIS on their full frame mirrorless cameras.

Canon Watch’s take: While it’s entirely possible that Canon might working on a 100MP EOS R with IBIS, we feel at this point it’s little more than wishful thinking. We do not expect such a camera anytime soon. What we expect, is an EOS R model with a sensor resolution around 50MP.
