Canon USA Supports the Arbor Day Foundation’s “Replanting Our Forests” Program

Canon press release

Canon U.S.A. Supports the Arbor Day Foundation’s “Replanting Our Forests” Program that Helps Replenish Forests in the U.S.

Canon’s Support Contributed to the Planting or Distribution of 460,000 Trees to Date

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 24, 2018 – With forest fires and severe weather sweeping the country and taking their toll on trees nationwide, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, stays steadfast in its commitment to support the Arbor Day Foundation’s “Replanting Our Forests” program. The Company successfully helped to contribute to the planting or distribution of 460,000 trees in the United States since 2009.

“It is through such initiatives that we demonstrate our dedication to Kyosei, engaging in activities that promote social and environmental responsibility,” says Toyotsugu Kuwamura, executive vice president and general manager, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are thrilled to help the Arbor Day Foundation revitalize forests in the United States in connection with their survival for future generations.”

The Arbor Day Foundation implements reforestation initiatives across the country to rebuild forests that are in desperate need of regrowth. Through this program, Canon helps contribute to the distribution and planting of one tree for every eligible imageRUNNER ADVANCE multifunction system sold from April 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018, up to a maximum of 50,000 trees. With the company’s support, trees this year plan to be planted and distributed in Bastrop Lost Pines Forest in Texas to support wildlife habitat improvement, Superior National Forest in Minnesota to help climate resiliency, and Withlacoochee State Forest in Florida for watershed restoration purposes.

“Canon’s corporate support is an incredible benefit to our program and we thank the team for their ongoing support,” says Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation. “Their contributions can be seen through revitalized forests and communities that, until recently, had lost the benefits that a full forest brings to the environment.”

The Kyosei Philosophy

Canon’s corporate philosophy of Kyosei signifies that all people should work together for the common good. Canon seeks to achieve its goals of energy and resource conservation, as well as reducing environmentally hazardous materials used in its products. Canon shares this philosophy through various environmental, conservation, recycling and sustainability initiatives. To continue this initiative at home, Canon employees began to plant and dedicate trees on the Canon Americas headquarter grounds to commemorate certain anniversaries and milestones.

Off Brand: Nikon working on full frame mirrorless camera with “rapid pace”, report suggests

nikon z 6 mark iii full frame mirrorless camera nikon rumors

Japanese business news site SankeiBiz reports that Nikon is working on a professional mirrorless camera with “rapid pace”. The announcement is expected before March 2019.

So what about Canon? Beside all the more or less reliable rumors, it appears that so far the most reliable intel came from Sony’s CEO, who months ago clearly said he believes that both Nikon and Canon are working on a full frame mirrorless camera. I guess the man knows what he is talking about.

Some rumor outlets are suggesting there may be a “development announcement” concerning a full frame mirrorless camera from Canon at Photokina 2018. We do not believe that (and got no hints for it). And we are not yet sure if Canon’s long rumored full frame mirrorless camera will be released to the general public in 2018 (Q1 2019 seems more likely).

Most likely Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera has already leaked through certification authorities. Still, we have no hints about the specifications, or the mount type.

Despite all the murmuring and rumor-recycling, we know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed to us so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

At the end of the day, there is just one thing we can be sure about: Canon is set to announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year. Here at CW we know since a while and reported it. All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS review (Optical Limits)

canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS

The experts at Optical Limits (formerly known as photozone.de) thoroughly tested Canon’s latest lens masterpiece, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS.

From the conclusion:

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4 USM L IS […] is quite sharp at f/1.4 and reaches great results at medium aperture settings. That’s on a 50mp sensor = at 21mp the quality is generally superb. Lateral CAs and distortions are low. The amount of vignetting sticks to the common characteristics in the class – reads: it’s visible at f/1.4 but not extreme. The quality of the bokeh is generally excellent except for highlight discs that deteriorate a little too “early” in the image field in our book. Bokeh fringing is a common issue in this lens class and the Canon lens can’t hide from this either.

Mechanically, the lens shows no real weakness. It is built to professional standards including weather sealing […]

Given the sum of its qualities, it is a no-brainer to give the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4 USM L IS our “highly recommended” badge. It is facing tough competition from the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART lens but the Canon lens has the benefit of providing more consistent focusing results. Read the review…

Sample photos are here. The EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is an amazing lens and I have yet to see a review that doesn’t highlight it. An interview with the engineers behind the lens is here. Our EF 85mm f/1.4L IS coverage is listed here.

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is in stock and sells for $1,599:
