Canon Rebel SL1/EOS 100D Hands-On By c|net Asia

c|net Asia published a hands-on with Canon’s new and tiny Rebel SL1/EOS 100D (price & specs), the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR (117 x 91 x 69mm, 407 g). Among the highlights of the Canon Rebel Sl1/EOS 100D are an improved Hybrid CMOS AF II system and newly designed image sensor. Did anyone consider that Canon may defining a new category with this camera?

The reviewer writes:

I was impressed by how lightweight it felt. While physical dimensions have been reduced, the dSLR didn’t lose out in terms of ergonomics and sat quite comfortably in my hand.

Despite the reduction in size and weight, the EOS SL1 / 100D still feels like a solid camera with similar construction and toughness to Canon’s other consumer DSLRs. The body is built from aluminium alloy and polycarbonate resin with carbon and glass fiber. The grip is squashed down compared to earlier Canon DSLRs with a repositioned shutter release as a result, but it’s still comparable to the experience with most mirror-less cameras

Pocket-lint has a good hands-on on the Rebel SL1/EOS 100D, called a “clever engineering project”. Quoting:

The 100D’s cut-back size has been achieved by a number of processes: Canon’s totally redesigned the shutter mechanism, as well as the sensor module which, despite offering the same exposed APS-C area, is considerably smaller thanks to shrinking down its surrounding components – the sensor module has also been made thinner. […]

There’s a 9-point autofocus system with one cross-type sensor […] that’s super fast in operation and gives confirmatory, light-up feedback in the optical viewfinder. The diamond arrangement of the focus points covers a decent portion of the 95 per cent field-of-view 0.87x magnification finder – there’s little compromise here in terms of size either.

Rumor: Full List Of Next Canon Product Announcements (Friday March 22)

EOS 700D
The upcoming Canon EOS 700D (Rebel T5i/Kiss X7i)

We got a series of rumors and leaks (here, here, here) during the last day. And now we have what most probably is the complete list of what Canon is going to announce next Friday (March 22nd):

The following is a list of Canon's new product will be announced in Korea:

– PowerShot SX280 HS

– PowerShot SX270 HS

– PowerShot A2500 (in certain overseas previously announced)

– (In Japan previously announced) IXUS 255 HS

– EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

– EOS 700D 18-55 STM KIT (in Japan Kiss X7i)

– EOS 700D 18-135 STM KIT (in Japan Kiss X7i)

– EOS 100D 18-55 STM KIT (in Japan Kiss X7)

– EOS 100D (in Japan Kiss X7)

As you can see, the name of the new extra-small Canon DSLR should be EOS 100D (and not EOS-b). Funny that they used a 3 digit name and not a 4 digit name, typical for the most entry level Canon DSLRs.

Canon Rumors Round-Up: What To Expect For Next Week

canon rumors

Last week we got a lot of speculations about new Canon gear that may be announced next week. Most of us are pointing to March 21st or 22nd for an important Canon announcement. First, there were invites sent out for a press announcement on March 21 & 22. Next, a few days ago, Canon sent out another invite. This time the invite came as a pen (pic above) that acts as a projector showing the invite information.

The interesting thing: the pen shows an Ixus/PowerShot logo, no mention of EOS. That’s strange, because we are expecting Canon to announce at least two DSLRs next week. Things are getting even more confusing, since we were also expecting Canon to announce the EOS 70D, but new informations at Canon Rumors suggest that the EOS 70D could be announced later in Spring.

So, what can we expect for March 21/22? The latest rumors suggest that Canon will announce two new DSLR. One should be the entry-level and extra-small DSLR Canon is supposed to work on and we reported about. We got some specs from a well known and reliable source:

  • 18MP sensor (same sensor featured on the EOS M and EOS 650D)
  • DIGIC 5 image processor
  • Touchscreen similar to the EOS M (possibly same 3″ size)
  • 9 focusing points
  • A new hybrid CMOS auto-focus
  • 98% viewfinder
  • 6fps
  • ISO up to 25,600
  • EF and EF-S lens support
  • HD video

The source stated that this DSLR will feature a lot of the technology used on the EOS M (price & specs). We didn’t get a model name for this extra small DSLR. However, in the last days the name EOS 100D was suggested. I think it is rather plausible Canon will announce this DSLR next week. Other sources have told me that there are “more than just prototypes” around. That’s to say that this DSLR is beyond the development stage, that it is ready to go to market.

The other DSLR Canon is supposed to announce next week is still a major mistery. No name, no specs, nothing, except that it should not be the EOS 70D. I am not sure this other DSLR will not be the EOS 70D: there have been too much signs that Canon could announce it by the end of March.
