Canon Still Dominates Camera Sales In Japan, EOS M50 Stable On Top

Canon Eos M50 Mark Ii

BCN rankings for December 2018 show how popular Canon cameras are in Japan, and how well the EOS M50 (Kiss M in Japan) is doing.

The EOS M50 is Canon’s most popular mirrorless camera so far. It’s likely that the EOS R will sooner or later be the most popular Canon MILC but for now the little M50 is selling like hot cakes.

The EOS M line-up is Canon’s mirrorless offering with an APS-C sensor. And it is here to stay. Some weird rumors surfaced suggesting Canon will make an EOS R model with an APS-C sensor. This is unrealistic, and even Canon execs said it will not happen.

Veni Vidi Vici – Canon Already Has 22% Of Full Frame Mirrorless Market In Japan

Full Frame Mirrorless

BCNranking posted market figures for full frame mirrorless cameras in Japan.

The Canon EOS R has just been releases, and Canon already has 22% market share for full frame mirrorless cameras in Japan.

The situation:

  1. Sony 67%
  2. Canon 22.1%
  3. Nikon 10.4%

Not bad for the company that was last to jump on the FF MILC bandwagon. It was a jump start for sure. It has to be said that Nikon’s Z6 doesn’t ship yet. However, it’s clear that Sony MILCs are going to face some serious competition. Sony dropped from a near 100% market share to 67%, and that’s not peanuts.

To us it’s clear that Canon will have more than 50% market share within a year or so, or at last when they will have released more EOS R bodies.

BCN Awards are out, Canon still dominates DSLRs and compact camera rankings, sells more MILC than Sony (in Japan)

EDIT: sorry guys, I mixed up the rankings of DSLRs and compact cameras.

A huge thanks to EdinaMN Guy for always remembering me about the BCN Awards.

BCN posted their market reports (for Japan), and there is little surprise overall.

Canon leads the rankings for compact cameras and DSLRs, and is second ranked for mirrorless sales (so much to the “EOS M is a failure” myth). In Japan Canon sells more mirrorless cameras than Sony.

Rankings DSLRs:

  1. Canon 61.1%
  2. Nikon 34.4%
  3. Ricoh 4.2%

Rankings compact cameras:

  1. Canon 27.9%
  2. Nikon 25.5%
  3. Casio 17.2%

Rankings mirrorless cameras:

  1. Olympus 27.7%
  2. Canon 21.3%
  3. Sony 20.2%

No surprises here, and little changes compared to the past. Canon leads the sale rankings for lenses too, although with only 21.9% (thought it was more, and where is Nikon?):

  1. Canon 21.9%
  2. Sigma 16.2%
  3. Tamron 13.7%
