Are These The Specifications Of The Upcoming High-Megapixel Canon EOS R?

canon eos r firmware update

Yesterday a patent was spotted that seems to confirm our rumor about the resolution of the upcoming Canon EOS R camera.

Today, perfectly on schedule, a set of suggested specifications for the the high resolution EOS R surfaced. We were expecting it. Here are the specifications (of a prototype, according to the source):

  • A slightly larger body and grip than the EOS R
  • 80mp full-frame image sensor
  • A “new style” of joystick
  • Larger LCD than the EOS R
  • Larger viewfinder than the EOS R
  • The “viewfinder” can be tilted up and down
  • Dual SD card slots
  • No video specifications are known

All in all everything in the list above is plausible. A high resolution EOS R that’s going to replace the Canon EOS 5Ds/5Ds R would have everything listed above.

The high resolution EOS R was scheduled to be announced in 2019 but it starts to appear it will come in 2020. We are still not sure about this.

All high resolution EOS R rumors are listed here. More Canon rumors are listed here. Stay tuned.

Canon Patent Application Seems To Confirm Our Rumor About High Resolution EOS R Model

canon patent application

Back in August we were tipped about what might be the sensor resolution of the upcoming high resolution Canon EOS R body.

Now a Canon patent application (2019-149607, Japan) surfaced. The patent application discusses an image sensor having a resolution of 83MP. To be more precise, the Canon patent discusses how you can improve focus accuracy based upon different subject colors. Two sensors ate discussed, one having a resolution of 20.75MP, the other of 83.06MP.

We think this Canon patent application could refer to the sensor of the yet not announced high resolution EOS R model (all rumors).

There is another aspect that captured our attention. The other discussed resolution, 20.75MP, is almost exactly 1/4 of 83.06. So is this patent application referring to the same technology, i.e. Quad Pixel AF, as this previously spotted patent application? We do not think, however, that Canon’s high resolution EOS R will have Quad Pixel AF.

An 83MP resolution is also what you get in a full frame sensor if you upscale the 32.5MP of the new APS-C sensor featured on the brand new Canon EOS 90D and EOS M6 Mark II. So, a full frame sensor with 83MP, as we leaked, is definitely a possibility. Add to this that the upcoming high resolution EOS R camera will also (most likely) replace the Canon EOS 5Ds/5Ds R and it appears even more likely.

Might this patent refer to the sensor in Canon’s upcoming high resolution EOS R camera?

A Pro-Oriented Canon EOS R To Be Announced In 2021, Prototype Already Around?

canon eos r firmware update

Is a professional tier Canon EOS R model due not earlier than 2021?

That’s what Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reports. And that it will take 3 more years for the Canon RF lens ecosystem to match the EF mount lineup. And that a prototype of the pro-oriented EOS R body has already manufactured.

What we are talking here, is an EOS R model that’s equivalent to the Canon EOS-1D X cameras, i.e. the very flagship cameras in Canon’s offering. Such a camera has already been rumored, but its announcement was speculated to happen in 2020.

If this rumor is reliable, and we think it is, then at least we now know that a professional EOS R model is real. A working prototype means that Canon is actively developing this camera.

And where is the high resolution EOS R? So far we have no new intel about. Still considering a 2019 announcement to be likely.

Stay tuned.

What’s Coming Next From Canon?

After the announcement of the Canon EOS 90D and EOS M6 Mark II, what’s coming next?

There is gear we know is scheduled to release. Let’s see.

Where is the high resolution Canon EOS R camera?

Rumored to be released in Fall 2019, there still are no reliable information. Suggestions we got say the high res EOS R will have a resolution much higher than the Sony a7R IV (61MP), another rumor we got suggested a resolution around 80MP. Will this EOS R model be released in 2019? We still think it will

And what about the “pro/sport oriented” EOS R camera?

In this case we have even less information, and no reliable data so far. What we know is that it should be a camera equivalent to the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. Another bit we know, is that it will most likely be released in 2020, maybe before the Summer Olympics.

Will the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III be released in 2020?

Yes, this seems to be a sure thing. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III will be announced before the Summer Olympics 2020. Field testing is rumored since February. No specifications have been leaked so far.

What about the Canon EOS 7D Mark III?

We are still investigating the claim that the Canon EOS 90D replaces both the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II. The EOS 90D got some features previously featured on the 7D series, like a joystick, magnesium alloy, better weather sealing (compared to EOS 80D). For the time being it is not entirely clear what the future of the 7D lineup will be. On the other hand the EOS 90D is not advanced enough to be seen as a full fledged EOS 7D Mark II replacement. Another thing we wonder is: will Canon give up the highly popular 7D series? Seems unlikely to some degree.

Will there be an EOS R model with APS-C sensor?

No. This is an insistent and silly rumor that won’t disappear. A rumor not making any sense. Canon has a well selling APS-C mirrorless lineup with the EOS M system, and there is no reason to believe it will disappear. The EOS M6 Mark II has just been released and it’s common opinion that Canon is taking the EOS M system seriously.

Will there be more lenses for the EOS M system?

Yes, though we have yet no reliable intel to share.

Will there be a replacement for the Canon EOS M5?

Rumor has it that no, there will not. We are still investigating.

Will there be more lenses for the Canon EOS R system?

Yes, plenty. Canon is heavily investing in the EOS R system. We found a lot of patent applications for Canon RF mount lenses. Two new lenses have just been released, more are set to come. We are still waiting for Canon to release already announced Canon RF lenses.

And lenses for the Canon EF mount?

Canon stated that they will not continue EF lens development in 2019 (and maybe 2020). The EOS R system is where Canon is now investing most R&D resources.

What else can we expect?

The Canon C500 Mark II is coming, likely in 2020. One more Canon Cinema camera is likely. Some PowerShots are also likely for 2020.

Stay tuned, more to come.
