What To Expect From Canon In 2019

canon rumors color calibration

Canon announced their mirrorless system, two models are on the market. What’s next for the Japanese industry giant?

Predictions about Canon’s agenda have become quite difficult since the company is pretty secretive. However, some predictions can be made.

In general, Canon will focus on updating product lines and launching new ones, like the ZV-123 instant camera with built-in printer.

Three new PowerShot G series cameras might be announced. We expect the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, PowerShot G5 X Mark II and PowerShot G9 X Mark III to get announced within 2019. Stuff leaked about the PowerShot G7 X Mark III, almost nothing about the other two cameras.

The Canon EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II are also ready to be replaced. Rumor has it that Canon may launch one new camera to replace both the EOS 80D and the 7D Mark II. The replacement for the EOS 80D appears to be more likely to be announced this year, we are less confident about the EOS 7D Mark III. Some new Rebels are most likely also on Canon’s agenda. Finally, new Cinema gear and camcorders can be expected to be launched in 2019. We do not think Canon will announced the replacement for the EOS -1D X Mark II in 2019.

A new EOS R model is possible in 2019, although rumors suggest Canon will not announce a new EOS R model. If they do, it will be a high resolution EOS R camera. There are also six new RF lenses Canon already announced they will develop. These six new RR lenses might well be announced in 2019.

And the EOS M system? A new EOS M model is possible in 2019, though we didn’t get any hints so far.

Stay tuned.

There Might Be No New Canon EOS R (high resolution) Camera in 2019 [CW2]

canon eos r firmware update

There has been some rumoring that Canon might announce a high resolution EOS R camera in 2019. Nikon has one, the Z 7, so it appears to be plain logic that Canon will follow.

Apparently not. Latest rumors reaching us suggest the high resolution EOS R camera will not ship in 2019, and that’s likely to be a 2020 affair.

We’re not sure what to think about this rumor. Canon itself said they will announce six new RF lenses in 2019, most clearly aimed to a high resolution sensor, so it seems a bit strange they would hold back the exactly camera that could exploit those lenses. The rumor suggests Canon might withhold the high res body until CP+ 2020.

Now for the stranger part. Same rumor says a “high end” EOS R will be announced within 2019. A contradictory statement and that’s when we decided to downgrade the rumor to CW2.

Stay tuned.

Canon Might Release A Cinema Camera With RF Mount, In The Distant Future [CW1]

eos c100 cinema camera RF mount

Rumor has it that Canon may have a Cinema camera with RF mount in the works.

However, such a camera isn’t to be expected before 2021, or even later. I have no idea if the RF mount is anything that would make something special out of Canon’s Cinema cameras.

Honestly, I don’t think we will see such a camera anytime soon, if ever.

What’s Happening With The Canon EOS-1D X Series?

canon eos-1d x mark ii

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II is Canon’s top dog, the Canon DSLR for professionals. Period.

Announced three years ago, the EOS-1D X Mark II isn’t yet ripe for replacement. Most high end Canon DSLRs have a longer lifecycle. However, it seems Canon is already actively working on the EOS-1D X Mark III.

The announcement of the EOS-1D X Mark III might come at the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020. It’s still a long time to go.

Rumor has it that Canon might release the EOS-1D X Mark III ahead of the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan, which start July 2020. No specifications leaked so far, besides that the EOS-1D X Mark III will be more of an evolutionary than revolutionary update.

There have been rumors suggesting Canon might ditch the EOS-1D X line in favour of a mirrorless offering. This is unreal for the time being. It will take years before the folks shooting at events like the Olympics will switch from their trusted workhorses to a new technology.

Canon Instant Cameras With Built-In Printer On The Way?

Top 10 Cameras canon rumors full frame mirrorless camera canon eos r pro eos r canon lens explorers of light

Nokishita spotted a list of Canon camera SKUs which point to instant cameras, and some might have a built-in printer.

Here’s the list:

  • 3879C001: IVY 2in1 Instant Camera (Gold)
  • 3879C002: IVY 2in1 Instant Camera (White)
  • 3879C003: IVY 2in1 Instant Camera (Blue)
  • 3879C004: IVY 2in1 Instant Camera (Red)
  • 3884C001: IVY instant camera (green)
  • 3884C002: IVY Instant Camera (Yellow)
  • 3884C003: IVY instant camera (blue)
  • 3884C004: IVY instant camera (red)

The interesting thing here is that Canon mobile printer series have the moniker IVY. This, and the “2in1” denomination, makes us think some of the cameras listed above have a high probability to be instant cameras with a built-in printer, like the Fujifilm Instax Square SQ10
