Canon set to announce the EOS M5 Mark II ahead of Photokina 2018? [CW3]

Canon Eos M5 Mark Ii

More tidbits about Canon’s mirrorless agenda.

We have been told (thanks) that Canon will soon announce the replacement for the Canon EOS M5, so far the companies most advanced mirrorless camera.

The Canon EOS M5 Mark II may feature a new generation sensor with a 24MP resolution, and finally 4K video with Dual Pixel Auto Focus. The EOS M5 Mark II may also sport a top LCD display. Other suggestions point to more advanced video features, better interface, and all the common updates you may expect.

The EOS M5 was announced in September 2016, so a replacement sounds likely.

So far I do not have reliable intel about the specifications, so take the with a grain of salt. However, exciting times are ahead. Stay tuned to grasp every bit we get about Canon’s mirrorless agenda.

You may ask: what about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera? Well, it may not be announced for Photokina 2018 but for Photokina 2019, see here.

Eos M6 Price

Canon UK made Canon EOS M5 firmware 1.0.1 available for download. Firmware Version 1.0.1 incorporates the following fixes:

1. Corrects a phenomenon in which, when the playback grid is set to “6×4”, and a vertical image is displayed, or a horizontal image is rotated to be displayed vertically, the grid does not display correctly.
2. In languages other than Japanese, the phrase “no. of shots” has been corrected to “value” in the “Time-lapse movie settings > Interval/Shots” setting screen.

Firmware Version 1.0.1 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.0.
If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.0.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Thanks for the tip!

Imaging Resource reviewed the Canon EOS M5. There are a lot of things the reviewer liked about the EOS M5, like the new 24MP sensor, overall speed, good high ISO performance, and excellent color and hue accuracy.

In the conclusion they write:

The Canon EOS M5 offers image quality comparable to many other APS-C cameras, and the body itself offers a lot of physical controls plus (for the first time in the EOS M series) a built-in electronic viewfinder. Dual Pixel CMOS AF and a DIGIC 7 image processor combine to help the M5 deliver good performance across the board. Despite a few shortcomings, including a sparse EF-M lens lineup (although you can use EF/EF-S lenses with a separate adapter) and lack of 4K video, the EOS M5 is the best mirrorless camera that Canon has produced so far […] Read the review at Imaging Resource

The weak spot of the Canon EOS system is the limited availability of native lenses. That said, it must also be said that Canon’s Dual Pixel AF technology works so good that most EF and EF-S lenses mounted through the adapter work without issues and without AF slowing down or getting erratic. The EOS M5 is Canon’S most powerful and feature-rich mirrorless camera so far.

The Canon EOS M5 is getting more attention than I thought. A sign that Canon isn’t making anything wrong when it comes to mirrorless. Jared Polin, better known as FroKnowsPhoto, posted a 30 minutes video where he goes through the setup of the Canon EOS M5. The video is also a user guide to the EOS M5.

Canon EOS M5 sensor is made for mirrorless, DxOMark says

DxOMark published test results for the Canon EOS M5 sensor. It seems, at least according to DxOMark’s findings, that Canon suited the EOS M5 with a sensor designed for mirrorless systems (mainly because of Dual Pixel AF). The Canon EOS M5 got a score of 77.

On paper, the M5 looks like a mini-EOS 80D; however, that’s not quite the case. The built-in electronic viewfinder, the additional controls, and 7 fps burst with continuous AF (9 fps with AF locked) are all welcome additions. Taken together with the 24.2-MP Dual Pixel AF CMOS sensor and Digital IS, it all signals Canon’s intention to compete more seriously with rivals in the mirrorless segment. With hindsight, it seems like the Dual Pixel AF CMOS was designed with mirrorless in mind. Image quality is similar to that of the sensor found on the EOS 80D.
