Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS Review (incredibly seductive bokeh, Photography Blog)

Canon RF 85mm F/1.2 DS Review

After the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L, Photography Blog also posted their Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS review. The “DS” is for Defocus Smoothing, a proprietary optical technology by Canon.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS is one of the boutique lenses for the Canon EOS R system, i.e. a lens that showcases what you can do with the new RF mount.

Photography Blog gave the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L DS a “Highly Recommended” rating and 5/5 stars. From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS is the almost perfect lens for portrait photographers looking for that extra pizzazz in their images.

With its unique DS coating, the already enthralling bokeh produced by the standard, non-DS RF 85mm f/1.2L USM lens becomes even softer and more dreamy, without sacrificing any of the outstanding sharpness that both lenses offer in spades.

The main trade-off for the buttery-smooth bokeh is the loss of light – effectively 1 1/3 stops darker when shooting at f/1.2 – which means that you’ll need to slow your shutter speed or bump up the ISO to compensate, neither of which are a great option.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS creates an incredibly seductive bokeh effect that’s hard to ignore once you’ve tasted it, though. It may be one of the most niche lenses that we’ve ever tested, and one of the most expensive, but it’s also one of the most distinctive…

Canon EOS R6 Rumor – Is A 20MP EOS R Camera Coming?

Canon Eos R6 Rumor

While we still have to decide what to think about the latest Canon EOS R5 rumor, here we are with a first time Canon EOS R6 rumor.

Not sure where these monikers come from, if they are Canon’s or just made up by the rumor mills. However, an alleged specification list for an alleged Canon EOS R6 (previously rumored as EOS Rm) camera surfaced over the web, and here it is:

  • 20mp full frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
  • 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic.
  • 4K@60p
  • New battery (might be the same as the EOS R5)
  • Announcement in May 2020
  • Starts shipping in June 2020

We are not really convinced of this specification list. As little as we are of the EOS R5 spec list (which still seems to be too good to be true).

Time will tell. In the meantime stay tuned for the next Canon EOS R6 rumor.

Canon EOS R5 Rumor: Updated Specification List (45MP confirmed)

Canon EOS R With Aps-c

Here is a new Canon EOS R5 Rumor. The EOS R5 was previously rumored as “EOS Rs”. We expect the Canon EOS R5 to get announced February 13, 2020.

A few days ago a specification list for the Canon EOS R5 emerged. While there were some plausible features listed, other specs look too good to be true (especially the video features).

Now we have a slightly corrected specification list coming from the same source. Have a look below (the more reliable/plausible specifications are in bold):

  • It will be named Canon EOS R5
  • 45mp full frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
    • 5 stops with IBIS alone
    • 7-8 stops of correction when used with in-lens stabilization
  • 12fps mechanical, 20fps electronic
  • Scroll wheel added to the back
  • No touch bar
  • Liveview/Movie toggle like previous EOS DSLRs
  • Larger capacity battery, but looks like the LP-E6
  • 8K@30fps RAW
  • 4K@120fps
  • 4K@60fps
  • Built-in 5GHz WiFi
  • New battery, but the same shape and compatibility as the EOS 5D Mark IV
  • Announcement ahead of CP+ next month
  • Shipping in July 2020

We are still a bit puzzled by the 4K video at 120 fps, and also about the 8K raw video. This can only come with a crop factor in our opinion. On the other hand, our own sources confirmed the sensor resolution to be 45MP, so I guess this one should be safe now. This new specification list pretty much differs from a previous spec list coming from the same source.

The Canon EOS R5 would be the first of three rumored new Canon EOS R bodies to get announced this year. There is the EOS Rm, a camera rumored to be even more inexpensive and entry-level than the EOS RP (but is this possible, given that the EOS RP currently sells for less than $1,000?) And then there is this possible, third Canon EOS R camera coming in 2020. We know as good as nothing about this one. Will this one be a sports camera? Or is this just the EOS R Mark II?

It’s getting hot and hotter, folks. A Canon EOS R5 announcement before CP+ Show means there will be more leaks and also images very soon. So, stay tuned for the next Canon EOS R5 rumor.

Canon EOS Rs Rumor: Possible But Unlikely Specification List Surfaces

Canon EOS Rs Rumor

Here is a new Canon EOS Rs rumor, and it comes with a specification list that’s almost too good to be true.

This specification list pretty much differs from a previous spec list coming from the same source:

  • 45mp (conflicting intel suggests also 40mp)
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
    • 5 stops with IBIS alone
    • 7-8 stops of correction when used with in-lens stabilization
  • 14fps / 20fps (conflicting intel suggests also 12fps / 20fps)
  • Scroll wheel added to the back
  • No touchbar
  • Liveview/Movie toggle like previous Canon EOS DSLRs
  • Larger capacity battery, but looks like the LP-E6
  • 8K@30fps RAW
  • 4K@120fps
  • 4K@60fps
  • Announcement ahead of CP+ next month

These are a hell of video specs, and the reason we have some doubts about this specification list. The same source also suggested this EOS R model might be named EOS R5, and not EOS Rs (which has always been a moniker invented by the rumor mills).

45MP are perfectly fine as sensor resolution, besides the fact that so far resolutions around 70-80MP have been rumored. Another thing is a bit weird, according to experience. If the announcement is set to happen before CP+ Show then we should see serious leaks and reliable specification lists very soon, or they should even already have leaked. It’s a month until CP+.

The Canon EOS Rs would be the first of three rumored new Canon EOS R bodies to get announced this year.

Any ideas about this Canon EOS Rs specification list?

Stay tuned for the next Canon EOS Rs rumor.

Canon Rumor: EOS R Camera With APS-C Sensor Mentioned Again

Canon Rumor Canon EOS Webcam Utility

While we are still skeptical about this Canon rumor, we are less than we were before Nikon announced the Z 50.

But then: Nikon doesn’t have an established mirrorless lineup with an APS-C sensor, Canon has the EOS M. So, does an EOS R model with a crop sensor make any sense for Canon? It might, if you consider that an APS-C EOS R model could indeed replace the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. And still we have doubts.

The source of the rumor seems to be pretty confident about such a camera. Its suggested an EOS R model with an APS-C sensor is in active development and might be released in 2021. Not earlier because Canon is set to first deliver more RF lenses. The source says lenses for the APS-C EOS R would be RF-S lenses.

And what about this year, any EOS R cameras coming? Yes, three of them are rumored. The first one, named EOS Rs by the rumor mills, should be announced pretty soon. The second one, named EOS Rm by the rumor mills, might get announced in May 2020. And there is what could be the EOS R Mark II, but we know nothing about this one.

Stay tuned for the next Canon rumor (all listed here).

What do you think, is a Canon EOS R body with an APS-C sensor a real thing?

Do you think Canon will release an EOS R model with APS-C sensor?
