Unreleased Canon Lens Appears At Certification Authority (RF mount?)

According to Nokishita, a Canon lens for a ILC has been registered at a Russian certification authority. The SKU of the lens is 4111C005AA (image below). Since when are lenses registered at certification authorities?

canon lens

We think this most likely refers to an upcoming RF lens for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system. Or does it refer to the already released RF 85mm f/1.2L DS, mentioned in the image above? Which one we do not know for the time being. Recent rumours suggested Canon is set to release some consumer oriented lenses for the EOS R. If true, this lens might be among them.

Among the next Canon releases we expect the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III (all rumors), already announced development-wise but still shrouded in mystery. The EOS-1D X Mark III is expected for February 2020. There is still uncertainty about the sensor resolution. While both 20MP and 24MP are rumored, we think the latter is more likely.

Canon might also release up to three EOS R bodies in 2020. One will be the high resolution EOS R, also expected for February 202, the other one might be the pro-oriented EOS R, though this one might well slip into 2021. And then there might be the EOS R Mark II in 2020. One of these upcoming EOS R bodies is rumoured to have a hybrid EF/RF mount. Time will tell.

One of the hottest speculation about upcoming Canon cameras concern IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). Some rumors suggest it will be featured on the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III. We think this is unlikely. There is no reason to doubt that Canon is working on IBIS, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that a Canon exec told the world about. But it’s likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be a mirrorless camera in the EOS R lineup, and not the flagship DSLR.

Stay tuned for more.

Here Is Another Take On Canon’s Rumored Mirrorless DSLR Hybrid Camera

Professional Canon EOS R Mirrorless

Not a rumor, just for fun.

After a short discussion of the mirrorless vs DSLR debate, Tony & Chelsea Northrup think they found out the design of the Canon EOS R mirrorless camera with hybrid EF and RF mount. They even mention us :-) Enjoy.

This professional Canon EOS R body with hybrid EF/RF mount is said to play in the same league as the EOS-1D X series, i.e. the most professional tier in Canon’s gear lineup. This makes more sense than you might think at first glance. Given how committed Canon is to the EOS R system, an EOS R body with hybrid lens mount isn’t that unlikely in our opinion. And even if it is an engineering challenge, and for sure it is, Canon has the means and skills to build it.

Canon EOS Ra Review On An Astrophotography Road Trip

Canon EOS Ra Review

Here is a Canon EOS Ra review for all the astrophotography enthusiasts out there.

If you never heard about the EOS Ra, it’s a modified EOS R camera dedicated to astrophotography. The EOS Ra was built off the EOS R system combining new features, such as four times greater transmittance of hydrogen-alpha Hα rays (656.3 nm wavelength) through an infrared cutoff filter, which helps capturing high-precision images of the deep-red wavelengths emitted by nebulae in vivid color, without any special camera alterations. On board is also a 30x live view mode for highly precise manual focusing.

AstroBackyard‘s Trevor Jones took the Canon EOS Ra on a road trip to see if it is worth for astrophotographer, which is pretty much the only category of photographers interested in the Canon EOS Ra. For this Canon EOS Ra review, Trevor used a Canon RF 85mm F/1.2L lens under semi-dark skies (Bortle Scale Class 4) for some wide-field shots of the night sky. Enjoy the video.

Canon Patent Application: IBIS and Lens IS Working Together

Canon Patent

Here is another Canon patent application dealing with how to make IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation) and lens IS work together smoothly.

Canon patent application 2019-215426 (Japan) discusses the possibility of a change in the composition that occurs when IBIS and lens IS are working together. If both are working only while shooting, the resulting composition might be slightly shifted compared to what was seen in the viewfinder.

Although the camera in the image on top resembles more a DSLR than a MILC, we think this patent application too will find its way in a future EOS R camera body. We expect two new EOS R cameras in Q1 and Q2 2020, will this technology be already on board?

We have no doubts that Canon will feature IBIS on future cameras, given the remarkable collection of patent applications dealing with it and the fact that a Canon exec told the world about. And it’s very likely that the first Canon camera to feature it will be mirrorless.

More Canon patent applications are listed here. Some particularly interesting patent applications we think might get into production are these:

Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 Review Sample Photos (RF mount)

Samyang AF 14mm F/2.8 Review

Dustin Abbott posted as set of Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 review sample images. The full review will follow soon.

Says Dustin:

Canon desperately needs more financially accessible lenses for a broad rollout of the R system, and to date third party support had been reserved to a handful of manual focus lenses.  Fortunately, that seems about to change, and leading the charge is Korean lens maker Samyang (also sold as Rokinon) with this lens – the Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 lens in an RF mount.  This is an autofocusing lens (and one that autofocuses very well on the Canon EOS R that I tested it on) along with having a beautiful, weather sealed build.  It delivers an extremely wide angle of view that is wider than any other lens on the platform and comes with a more approachable price tag
