Possible Supply Shortage For Canon (and others) After Fire Hits Circuit Manufacturer

Canon Rumors Canon Full Frame Mirrorless

The global pandemic already affected the supply chains of camera manufacturers (the EOS R5 announcement was delayed many times). Now a massive fire at a Japanese chip manufacturers might have made things worse.

A three-day fire broke out on October 20 at the AKM Semiconductor factory in Japan. AKM supplies most Japanese camera manufacturers. Inside Imaging reports that

AKM is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of large-scale integrated circuits (LSIs), including digital-to-analog converters (DACs), analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), as well as other components used in the manufacture of  consumer and professional products in the audio and appliance industries.

While it’s not clear at time of writing exactly which components camera manufacturers are sourcing from AKM, the factory made ADC chips which take analog audio from a microphone and converts it to the digital signal that a camera records when shooting video. Just as smartphones are now cameras, cameras are increasingly becoming sophisticated, broadcast-quality audio recording devices, and the connection with a supplier like AKM is by no means peripheral.

The fire destroyed the factory, which won’t be back in production for at least six months and perhaps as long as one year, according to reports.

The fire affects Nikon and Sony too, apparently. Insider Imaging’s article, which is dated 11/24, ends stating that they have been told:

that Canon, Nikon and Sony have already pulled back support for Black Friday promotions ‘as there will be a shortage of stock due to fire in (the) Japan factory,’ according to the source.

So, I didn’t notice or hear of any pulled back support for Black Friday. More information about the fire at AKM can be found here.

Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM DxOMarked, Scores Better Than EF 85mm f/1.2L

RF 85mm F/2

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens has undergone DxOMark’s tests, and the result is rather surprising. Or maybe not, given that we are talking Canon and RF mount.

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM lens for a DxOMark score of 39. That’s better than two “L”-tier lenses for Canon’s EF mount. Both the EF 85mm f/1.2L (38) and EF 85mm f/1.2L II (37) have a lower score, although the difference is minimal. Still, a $600 lens performing optically better than a $2,000 lens.

From DxOMark’s conclusion (emphasis mine):

After the introduction of the ultra-fast and somewhat esoteric RF 85mm F1.2L models for Canon’s new EOS R system, the more modestly priced and compact Canon RF 85mm F2 Macro IS STM is likely to placate most detractors of those early L-series who cited cost and weight as barriers to entry. As the RF mount equivalent of the highly regarded EF 85mm F1.8 version, the new lens has some interesting benefits such as stabilization and close focusing. Both features will appeal to wedding photographers, but it is the very high optical quality that will likely make this particular lens stand out and earn its place as the true replacement for the older EF version.

Admittedly, there are some points that may make potential purchasers pause, such as the slower maximum aperture, front barrel extension, and the adoption of an STM over the usually faster USM, but few can deny that this lens is an appealing alternative to those costly L-series models.

Read the review at DxOMark…

The Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a very good performer, other reviews confirmed it. This lens is just a no brainer for any EOS R owner.

Canon EOS R5 Review From Phillip Bloom (a hot and messy start)

Canon Eos R5 Review 8k Video Firmware Updste

Here is a Canon EOS R5 review, and as you can easily get from the title, it’s not entirely positive.

Philip Bloom has his take on the Canon EOS R5 in the videos below. He says:

This is my long term “review” of the Canon R5 and I’ve taken a different approach than normal in that I decided to split it into two much parts of a more manageable length. This isn’t about specs, it’s about really living with and using the camera over 4 months.

[…] This is not my usual review, and not strictly a review either. I’ve made two videos which take a look at the Canon R5, the first part is the backstory, the launch and my initial thoughts after buying one. This part is about the experience you get when using it rather than over analysing and going over all the specs as there are countless videos about that. The overheating issues are still a focus, but another focus is the autofocus….with animals. Plus there is a special guest near the end. :)

The overheating issue is also discussed. And here are the two videos. Keep in mind that this is a review coming from a videographer. Enjoy.
