Canon PowerShot Zoom Review – The Pocket Telephoto

Canon Powershot Zoom Review

The Canon PowerShot Zoom definitely is not shaking up the camera industry. Reviews are scarce, It has been called “old tech in a monocular shell“. Here is an unbiased Canon PowerShot Zoom review.

At a gance:

  • 12.1MP CMOS Sensor
  • 100-400mm Equivalent Optical Zoom
  • One-Touch Switchable Zoom
  • Full HD 1080p Video at 30 fps

The Canon PowerShot Zoom is an inexpensive gadget for fun, photography interested kids, nature fans. Geoffrey Morrison posted his review on Forbes. A sober view on the Canon PowerShot Zoom. Here are some excerpts:

One of its best attributes is how easy it is to use. It can fit in just about any pocket, or hang from a lanyard. Turn it on as you bring it to your eye and it’s ready to go by the time it gets there. The OLED viewfinder is excellent, with great contrast and high resolution.

[…] Image quality is fairly average. If you take the zoom aspect out of the equation, the better mobile phones will have better colors and detail. However, no phone offers the zoom reach of the Zoom

[…] While I could probably buy a used telephoto for $300, it’d be a heavy and bulky addition to my kit. With the Zoom, however, I could have something that I could have in my back pocket on a shoot to capture the occasional closeups or distant interesting bits.

High Resolution Eos R

Some bits of information about the long rumored high resolution EOS R5s (moniker from the community not official)

Canon Rumors reports some high resolution EOS R5s specifications:

– Approxamently 90mp sensor

– “Pixel-shift like feature” to add resolution. Total resolution “north of 300mp”.

– Nearly identical body design as the Canon EOS R5.

– Video features are “NOT a focus” of the Canon EOS R5s.

– Image stabilization will be a “slightly different version” than the current RF mount cameras.

– Pricing will be “similar” to the Canon EOS R5.

– Announcement scheduled for Q1 of 2021

The interesting piece in the list above is the “pixel-shift like feature” which is able to raise the resolution to more than 300MP. This feature might be similar to what is featured on the Fujifulm GFX 100.

This Seriously Skilled Guy Watercooled A Canon EOS R5, And Then Found A Better Solution

Canon Eos R5

Here is a incredibly cool Canon EOS R5 hack, performed by a very talented guy with solid engineering skills (take this as a warning: don’t do it at home).

The guys behind DIY Perks have disassembled a Canon EOS R5 and applied a water-cooling system to the camera’s motherboard. Unlimited 8K recording time is achieved, no more overheating. However, the water-cooling hack as neat as it is, is a gimmick. These guys did far better.

Since a water cooled EOS R5 would be rather impractically out in the field, DIY Perks came up with a better idea and did some serious thermal engineering. They custom-made a copper heat sink and applied it with thermal paste (not thermal tape) to the CPU and DRAM chips on the camera’s motherboard. In environments that are not too hot this allows for continuous video recording without impairing the handling of the EOS R5. A small fan can be applied to the back of the R5 when it is used in warmer places. A professional looking solution that works.

The video below shows all steps and is very interesting. Kudos to the guys at DIY Perks.
