Canon Powershot G17 To Be Announced Soon? (and leaked spec list)

Powershot G17
The Canon Powershot G16

One of the compact cameras Canon is expected to announce in the next time is the replacement of the Powershot G16 (price & specs), supposedly named Powershot G17.

A rumor surfaced on the web stating that Canon will announce the Powershot G17 during May 2014. That means less than a year after the announcement of the Powershot G16. Unusual but not implausible.

A short specification list also came with the rumor. The Powershot G17 could have the following specs:

  • A 24-200mm f/1.4-2.0 lens
  • A new developed 1″ Sensor
  • an all magnesium body with comfortable grip
  • DIGIC 6 CPU

At least the f/1.4-2.0 lens is an exciting news.

Canon Powershot SX60 HS IS Rumored Again (100x zoom, announcement soon)

Powershot SX60
Canon Powershot SX50 HS

Canon Rumors received a new rumor about the upcoming Canon Powershot SX60 HS IS, the successor of the popular Powershot SX50 HS IS (price & specs).

The rumor states that the Powershot SX60 will have a 100x zoom (and not a 60x zoom as I was told from one of my sources), and that the camera could be announced soon, possibly before summer. This candidate announcement date was told to me too. The 100x zoom is said to cover  a whooping 20-2000mm range. In the past a Canon patent for a 100x zoom was spotted. Never the less, I think the rumor about a 100x zoom is non-sense.

Another Mention Of Canon’s High Megapixel DSLR (EOS 3D is back)

EOS 3DEOS 3D

The Canon-high-megapixel-saga grows on a new murmuring, and the fabled moniker “EOS 3D” is back again.

Latest rumors have it that Canon will announce a DSLR named “3D” later this year. The rumor suggests it will be sort of a bigger brother to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs), and not a camera that’s part of the EOS-1 series.

Specifications of the EOS 3D are said to be “broadly similar” to the 5D Mark III, but with “much higher” resolution and 4k video. Price will be higher than the first price of the 5D Mark III. The 3D should be available late 2015.

There is a small possibility, suggested by the rumor source, that the “3D” name was just the name of a prototype undergoing testing, and that the DSLR we are discussing here could indeed be the EOS 5D Mark IV.

Beside that “3D” is a moniker that is rumored since long (and probably never will be seen in the real world), it is also worth to mention that the latest “Canon high megapixel”-rumors are somewhat contradictory. The latest information I got was about a possible 3-layers sensor. I have also been told that this camera could be announced soon. However, Canon Rumors had word that there will be no Canon DSLR announcement at NAB 2014.

Hard to say how many salt is needed here. I don’t think we will ever see a Canon DSLR named 3D, but I think it is rather plausible it could be a name given to test units. I am also pretty sure Canon is working on a high resolution DSLR.

Another Mention Of Canon’s High Megapixel DSLR (75MP, and to be announced soon) – Update

Canon's High Megapixel DSLRCanon's High Megapixel DSLR

After a while I got an email with some new tidbits about the long rumored high megapixel Canon DSLR. The interesting fact: 75MP are again mentioned as the possible sensor resolution, while the most recent rumors were all referring to a 45MP sensor. The rumors referring to a 75MP sensor were mentioning a Non Bayer Multilayer sensor.

It is not clear if the 75MP are the full output resolution or if the sensor has 2 photodiodes for each pixel (like Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology). A previous rumor suggested that 75MP are a ‘total usable photo site count’. In the past Canon filed a patent for a 3 layer, Foveon image sensor. Since this kind of sensor uses 3 layers for each color, the effective resolution could be 25MP (as pointed out by a reader in the comments section).

The big megapixel DSLR should be announced soon, so says the rumor. Does soon mean at the NAB Show 2014 in Las Vegas (4/5-4/11)? I can’t say that, but it could be. If this megapixel monster is thought for videography, then NAB 2014 could be the stage to announce it. All this comes from a new source, so the usual grain of salt is required.

In any case, Canon will announce at least one new DSLR at NAB 2014, and it should be a Cinema EOS camera. I think we will soon know more. Stay tuned.

Update: Others also had word that Canon will announce at least one camera at NAB 2014 (if not 2 cameras). The reported rumour also suggests that it will be a Cinema EOS camera (said to have CFast 2.0 and PL mount version). There may also be an important firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D C (B&H | Adorama). That’s a bit strange since the latest firmware update for the 1D C was a few months ago (november 2013).
