The Canon EOS M50 is the company’s next mirrorless camera

Canon Rumors

Nokishita spotted new, unreleased Canon gear. And it gets pretty interesting.

It appears Canon has registered the Bluetooth module of a new camera at a certification authority. The new camera is named EOS M50 (Kiss M in Japan), and it definitely appears be a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.

eos m50

It’s suggested the EOS M50 might be similar to the EOS M5 but with less features. I’m a bit puzzled by the moniker “Kiss M” (for the Japanese market), which seems to suggest a more DSLR-like design. Well, this is assuming “Kiss M” and “EOS M50” refer to the same piece of gear (I think they do).

When gear is spotted at certification authorities it is usually a matter of weeks before this gear gets announced. However, I do not expect the EOS M50 to be announced in 2017. This will most likely be a 2018 announcement.

What do you think is the EOS M50? Sound off in the comment section.

Canon 200-600mm non-L telephoto lens rumored again [CW2]

Here is another long running rumor, dating back to 2015 since when a patent for a Canon 200-600mm f/4.5-5.6 lens was spotted.

This lens is said to be a non-L lens, i.e. consumer oriented. Something both Sigma and Tamron have in offer (although in the 150-600mm range). This non-L, Canon 200-600mm super telephoto lens is now said to be announced somewhen in 2018.

You may wonder why such a super telephoto lens would not be an L lens. According to the rumor, Canon does not want to have an in-house competition with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II. Another reason might be that Canon wants to keep he price aligned with the Sigma and Tamron offerings.

Let’s hope there is some truth behind this rumor and that there will be a Canon 200-600mm lens.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned.

New Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 L lens rumored again

ef 50mm f/1.4

This appears to be on the way to become a recurring rumor. Again, it’s murmured Canon may announce a new EF 50mm f/1.4 “L” lens, now in 2018.

It’s suggested Canon is testing not less than two version of this lens, i.e. prototypes are said to already undergo testing by select photographers.

So, what are this rumored lenses about? One is said to be an EF 50mm f/1.4L IS lens, which might have been developed along wth the new EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. It’s unclear what the other 50mm lens is. Absolutely no hints here.

Seconding the rumor, the announcement of both, new 50mm lenses is scheduled somewhen in the first half of 2018.

Please take this rumor with a grain of salt. While being perfectly plausible, rumors concerning new 50mm lenses by Canon are pretty common and this one is also running since long. I don’t think this lens is one of the two unreleased Canon lenses that recently leaked at a certification authority.

The current EF 50mm f/1.4 lens (not L) dates back to 2003. A new, improved and “L” grade version of this lens wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Stay tuned…

Two Canon lenses and a flash show up at certification authority (EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS?)

Canon Rumors

Nokishita spotted some more unreleased Canon gear that has been registered at a certification authority.

The list:

  • Interchangeable lens 1
    • SKU: 2309C005AA
    • made in Japan
  • Interchangeable lens 2
    • SKU: 2439C005AA
    • made in Japan?
  • DS 401141
    • Electronic flash
    • SKU: 1757C003

It appears a fact that at least one of the lenses above is manufactured in Japan, which usually means the Utsunomiya factory. This factory produces Canon’s “L”-grade lenses. One of the listed lenses may be the long rumored EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS, i.e. Canon’s first image stabilised 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. Another lens that is rumored since a while is he Canon EF 135mm f/2L IS. However, I consider the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS more likely to be announced, since Canon still doesn’t have an image stabilised 24-70mm f/2.8L lens.

I expect both lenses to be announced before end of the year. We’ll see soon, so stay tuned.

Future Canon PowerShot Cameras to feature Dual Pixel AF on 1″ sensor? [CW2]

canon powershot g1 x mark iii dual pixel af

The recently announced Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is not the only PowerShot camera Canon will announce in the next months. We expect a replacement for the G5 X and G3 X, but there might be one or two more new PowerShots. CES in January is a good candidate for PowerShot announcements.

The interesting news is we have been told (thanks) that Canon is going to feature Dual Pixel AF on future PowerShot Cameras with 1″ sensors. DPAF is featured on the PowerShot G1 X Mark III, though this one has an APS-C sensor (first time on a PowerShot).

Featuring Dual Pixel AF on PowerShot cameras would be a smart move by Canon. The company’s patented auto-focus technology is a real game-changer. First introduced with the EOS 70D, DPAF was slowly ported to other photographic and video gear. It’s nowadays featured on mirrorless cameras, on entry-level Rebel DSLRs, high-end gear as the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II, Cinema gear, the new Canon XF405, and on the PowerShot G1 X Mark III. The Canon XF405 has an 1″ sensor, so we can assume Canon already has the assembly line to produce 1″ sensors with Dual Pixel AF.

However, Canon is very slow-paced when it comes to port their proprietary technology to a broader offering. As welcome as it would be to have Dual Pixel AF on consumer oriented PowerShot cameras, I have some doubts about it to happen soon. Hence, I rate it CW2 and will try to gather more information about the topic.

Stay tuned.
