Canon EOS 6D Mark II coming with full tiltable screen, new AF system, no 4K, announcement Q1 2017 [CW3]

Eos 6d

I have been told (thanks) a few new bits about the EOS 6D Mark II.

According to our source, the EOS 6D Mark II will have a full tiltable display (like the EOS 80D), a new AF system with a “high number of AF points”, and will not sport 4K. Announcement is still suggested for Q1 2017.

Nothing really new here. Unfortunately the source wasn’t able to tell how many AF points the new AF system will have, which is information I am interest in. My guess is, the new AF system on the EOS 6D Mark II will be something comparable to the EOS 80D’s AF system.

Previously, these specs have been rumored:

  • Announcement first half of 2017 (CP+?)
  • 25MP sensor
  • Dual SD card slots
  • Might have 4K
  • Less weight and smaller size

I’m still somewhat puzzled with the 25MP (I’ve been told 24MP) and I am pretty sure it will not have 4K (sorry guys). No news about the announcement: it’s Q1 2017 as previously suggested.

Take it with a grain of salt. Given Canon’s secrecy and the fact it’s months before we will see the EOS 6D Mark II, it’s simply too early for EOS 6D Mark II specs we can take for granted. There will be many leaks and rumors in the next months. However, the reliable rumors about the EOS 6D Mark II will come just a few weeks before the announcement.

Stay tuned…

New Canon gear shows up at registration authorities (DSLRs, mirrorless, Powershots)

Nokishita posted a list of upcoming Canon gear, registered at various registration authorities. I guess some of the items have already been announced, but not the mirrorless camera in the list, since it has a SKU that is not the same as in a previous registration leak. Is the EOS 6D Mark II also in the list? My guess is it is not. The listed DSLRs are most likely new Canon Rebel models, they could be announced in January 2017 at CES. The Powershots too are most likely set to be announced at CES 2o17.

Canon full frame mirrorless camera still in works but not set to be announced for next years [CW3]

canon rumorscanon rumors

We know since December 2014 that Canon is working on a full frame mirrorless camera, and we knew that it was a long term affair. We also knew that development of this full frame mirrorless camera saw delays because of issues related to the mount type. All this got another mention in a new rumoring about the fabled Canon full frame mirrorless camera, along with some new tidbits.

The latest murmurings suggest Canon is having troubles making EF lenses work, suggesting there will not be a new mount type. Instead, EF lenses would be mounted without an adapter. Such a full frame mirrorless camera is said to be announced not before 2018.

Could there be a full frame mirrorless camera with fixed lens, possibly before the MILC? Not unlikely. There is a patent pointing in that direction, which is a good sign at least. Another patent clearly shows that Canon is working on a full frame mirrorless camera. However, there is an interview with Canon execs that doesn’t really make you think Canon  is particularly enthusiastic about the idea.

Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III coming with APS-C sensor? [CW2]

Powershot G1 X II

Interesting rumor that came in (thanks). May the Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III feature an APS-C sized image sensor? According to our (new) source it will.

The rumor has some chance to be real. Actually, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II (and G1 X Mark I) features an 1.5″ sensor. This sensor is 20% smaller than an APS-C sensor (and around 5.6 times larger than the one found in the Canon PowerShot G16). Since the G1 X Mark III always had a pretty big sensor, tending towards the size of APS-C, the company may well have decided to put an APS-C sensor in the upcoming Powershot G1 X Mark III.

The Powershot G1 X III may be announced in Q1 2017. I think it will still have a 1.5″ sensor, but I can’t leave out the possibility of an APS-C sized sensor. What do you think? Sound off in the comments section.

Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO IS may come late 2017, several patents exist [CW3]

ef 600mm f/4

Do you remember the prototype 600mm f/4 lens shown at Canon Expo 2015? Well, guess it was just a matter of time before a pertinent rumor surfaced.

A new Canon EF 600mm f/4 DO IS lens is said to be announced in late 2017. Indeed, there are several patents pointing to such a lens, both for a 600mm f/4 and 600mm f/5.6 and with some patents dating back to 2012 (1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5).

Given the amount of patents pointing to a 600mm optical formula, I guess it is a safe assumption that Canon is actively working on such a lens and that we will see it, sooner or later. While I am pretty sure Canon is working on a EF 600mm f/4 DO IS lens, I am sceptical about the announcement date since rumored dates for Canon’s big white “L” lenses rarely happened to be right.

The prototype EF 600mm f/4 DO lens (pic above and below) shown at Canon Expo 2015 features Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics, a technology Canon announced in August 2015. BR corrects chromatic aberrations. The technology was first seen on the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II.

The rumor adds some more juice, suggesting that

Canon is well on its way developing updates for the other “big white” prime lenses. While optics will likely be similar, Canon is working on weight savings techniques and updated coatings and IS systems. We don’t expect to see these lenses announced in 2017, although we’re told it’s possible we may see them being tested at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.

Pinch of salt needed here.

First Canon EOS 6D Mark II specification list surfaces (4K, 25MP) [CW2]

Eos 6d

A first list of possible Canon EOS 6D Mark II specifications surfaced at Canon Rumors.

  • announcement first half of 2017 (CP+?)
  • 25MP sensor (with possible prototypes being around)
  • tiltable screen
  • dual SD card slots
  • might have 4K
  • less weight and smaller size

I think we can be pretty sure that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II (previous rumors) will also have Dual Pixel AF and an updated AF system. The articulating screen is also very likely. I do not think the EOS 6D Mark II will have Dual Pixel RAW (featured on the EOS 5D Mark IV).
