Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II To Be Announced In 2015?

EOS 5D Mark IV

A new rumor surfaced on the web.

NL got some bits about Canon’s roadmap for their flagship models. The rumor claims that Canon will announce the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS-1D X Mark II at the beginning of 2015. Both cameras are said to “incorporate significant advances in sensor design“. The buzz is that both DSLRs will feature the new sensor technology that Canon is most likely to announce with the replacement of the EOS 7D.

A replacement of the EOS 5D Mark III (price & specs) and EOS-1D X (price & specs) is at least plausible, both DSLRs were announced in 2012, in March and June, respectively. On the other hand, the EOS 7D (price & specs) was announced 5 years ago and we have yet to see a replacement (though is seems very probable that Canon will announce it towards the end of August.

Take this with the usual pinch of salt, and stay tuned for more news.

Something Big Is Coming From Canon (And It Will Ship in October)

EOS 7D Mark IIEOS 7D Mark II

Think it is time to sum up some of the rumors I am getting.

I’ve been told (thanks) that whatever Canon is going to announce the third week of August 2014 (18th is the buzz) will be “something really big” that will reaffirm Canon’s role as a leading imaging company.

This is the same source that contacted me time ago, saying that Canon will not replace the EOS 7D, which is part of a plan targeting a general revamping of Canon’s higher end DSLR lineup. The source repeated that what is coming is “the biggest change in Canon’s history“.

The same source said that the camera Canon is going to announce will feature a new sensor technology. There is a lot of buzz on the web talking about a possible Foveon sensor (it surfaced previously). I got notified that a new sensor technology will come indeed, without a Foveon-like sensor being explicitly mentioned. The rumors about a new sensor technology seem to be the most reliable so far.

And then there is the viewfinder. Back in December 2013 I had some rumors about a hybrid viewfinder. Well, this is surfacing again too.  It also seems that Canon is working on a camera that is oriented to new levels of videography.

Finally, Canon’s big shot that’s going to be announced at the end of August, will be ready to ship in October (so I have been told). It will be showcased at Photokina 2014 with big fanfare, and start to ship the weeks after.

Some considerations. Canon has the research facilities and the engineering know-how to produce something totally new and innovative. A new sensor technology by Canon is at least possible given the fact that Canon’s scientific and technological resources go far beyond their conservative reputation and equally conservative approach to sensor technology of the last years. However, at this stage it is difficult to distinguish the wishful thinking from the reliable rumors.

Take everything with a reasonable pinch of salt. There will be more in the next weeks.

Stay tuned…

Tamron Set To Announce 18-200mm Di III VC Zoom Lens With Native EF-M Mount (EOS M)

Tamron 18-200mm Di III VC

Who say’s the EOS M is dead? Another zoom lens is coming soon.

Digicame-Info (translated) just broke the news. Tamron is going to announce a super-zoom with native EF-M mount for the Canon EOS M system (price & specs), the image stabilised Tamron 18-200mm Di III VC. According to the reported rumor the lens should be announced tomorrow, June 19. Color is black and silver.

Tamron has a 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC for Sony E-Mount. Possibly the 18-200mm that Tamron is supposed to announce tomorrow has similar specifications.

Yesterday Canon announced the EF-M 55-200mm IS STM, a few days after Tamron is going to announce their own telephoto zoom with native EF-M mount. Good times for EOS M users :-)

New Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens For EOS M System Coming In Few Days

EF-M 55-200mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens will be announced in a few days

Digicame-info (translated) spotted the leak.

EF-M 55-200mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM

– […] molded aspherical lens and one UD lens
–  22% shorter compared to the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM
– 31% lighter than the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM
– image stabilisation up to 4 stops
– Faster AF thru optimisation of the algorithm of the drive system
– Full-time manual focus
– Hood ET-54B

The EF-M 55-200mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is compact and lightweight lens, 22% shorter and 31% lighter than the EF-S 55-250mm IS STM. The lens weights 260g and has a total length of 87mm. Appears to be a pretty compact and light tele zoom. And with optimised AF speed. Great news for EOS M owners. And no one saw it come ;-)

Let’s hope Canon will release this lens world-wide, and not just for the Asian market as they did with the EOS M2.

First Super-Basic Specs Of A Possible EOS 7D Mark II Surface

EOS 7D Mark II
Fake EOS 7D Mark II (mock-up)

That the replacement for the EOS 7D would be a pro-level APS-C camera is clear since long. Whatever Canon is going to announce at the end of August, it will be Canon’s next APS-C flagship.

A few supposed specs surfaced on the web, partly already rumored:

– EOS-1 style top plate, which means no mode dial
– Pop-up flash, even with the new style top plate
– WiFi & GPS will be internal

WiFi and GPS are long rumored specs. I have been told to expect an announcement before the end of August, possibly in the third week of August.

Stay tuned.

New Mentions Of EOS 7D’s “End of Life” Status, August Announcement More Likely

EOS 7D

The glorious Canon EOS 7D (announced August 2009) appears to have reached “end of life” status

I got more bits (thanks #1) about retailers in Europe getting notified that the Canon EOS 7D has reached an “end of life” status. And I have been told (thanks #2) that in such cases “normally within a month or two a replacement [is] announced“. That doesn’t mean there is a written rule stating that any time a Canon camera reaches end of life status there will automatically be a replacement within 2 months. It happens normally.

Always more hints are pointing to an announcement in August 2014. Previous rumors suggested an announcement in September for Photokina 2014. Is Canon going to announce something so big that they want to announce and introduce it in August for later showcasing it at Photokina 2014? Just my 2 cents.

Something is going to happen. Let’s hope to get soon some leaks about specs. For the time there is a rumored specs list, but I would take it with a big pinch of salt.
