I’ve been told (thanks) that the Canon DSLR rumored to be announced in 2017 and to feature 8K video, will be a sort of successor or replacement for the Canon EOS-1D C. For the time being I can not confirm it will be named Canon EOS-1D C Mark II, nor do I have any other hint about specs and moniker.
An EOS-1D C replacement with 8K makes sense. The EOS-1D C was announced in 2012 and released in 2013. The EOS-1D C was the first DSLR to meet the European Broadcasting Union HD Tier 1 requirements for use in HD broadcast production. And it is a highly regarded professional DLSR in this domain (and for professional still photography). Something that reflects in the price, $8000. The EOS-1D C features 4K, so it’s likely that Canon will add 8K in its successor.
8K video means that every frame has a 33MP resolution. While this will have a great impact on the processing capabilities of your computer, it means also that new ways to make photography are coming. Just think you can shot an 8K video in a complex setting, and afterwards choose the frames you want to have as photos. Not bad, eh?
Among all the discussion about 4K, EOSHD’s Andrew Reid posted an interesting article where he compares the Canon EOS-1D C with the Nikon D5. The EOS-1D C was released 4 years ago, the Nikon D5 a few weeks ago.
Well, It appears the EOS-1D C does 4K better than the Nikon D5. Writes Reid:

I always said that Canon knows how to implement 4K on a DSLR, and that they did it right. Sony does also, but you have to deal with overheating and consequent sudden shutdowns of the camera. I didn’t expect Nikon to implement 4K worse than Canon did 4 years ago. 4 years are a long time in technology.
I expect the EOS-1D X Mark II to feature 4K, as well as the EOS 5D Mark IV (or whatever it will be named). I think it is now no more a matter of rumors but just a matter of common sense. Both the EOS-1D X Mark II and the EOS 5D Mark IV simply can’t go to market without having 4K. As conservative as Canon may be, they can no longer afford to release both cameras without 4K. Don’t forget that it was here on Canon Watch where it first leaked that the EOS 5D Mark IV may feature 4K.
Canon released a new firmware for the Canon EOS-1D C (Adorama | B&H Photo), version 1.40. Firmware updates for the EOS-1D C can not be downloaded and installed by the user(here is why). You have to send in your EOS-1D C to an authorised Canon support center.

Firmware Version 1.4.0 incorporates the following improvements and fixes:
Fixes a phenomenon which occurs when the “Shutter button half-press” menu item, configured in “C.Fn5: Operation”>”Custom Controls Menu”, is set to metering start only; depending on when the shutter button is half-pressed, it may initiate AutoFocus.
As reported a few weeks ago, the Canon EOS-1D C will get a price drop. Starting Sunday, February 1st, the EOS-1D C will sell for $7,999 instead of $11,999 – that’s $4,000 price drop. It appears the Canon EOS-1D C saw a price drop around $1,000 by Canon Hong Kong, where it is now selling for approx. $7,000 ($12,000 in USA). There are speculations these may mean something, like a replacement coming soon (don’t think so).

According to EOSHD forum member Fabuloux, whose local dealer now sells the 1D C for HKD 54,000 ($7000 US dollars) the low price is a result of Canon lowering the official list price to $61,999 HK dollars. Sure enough you can view the new price on the official Canon Hong Kong website here. That is now MUCH closer to the RRP in Hong Kong of the plain old 1D X, which sells for $44,000 ($5700 US dollars).
A difference of approx. $1,700 to the EOS-1D X is an interesting point. Given the price in Hong Kong you may want to have a look on eBay to see if you can grab an EOS-1D C for $7,000.
