March Mirrorless Sales Drop 50% Compared To Last Year Amidst Coronavirus Pandemic

Coronavirus Pandemic

Well, this if this isn’t an indicator that tells a long story, and again it’s told by the Coronavirus pandemic.

BCN Retail reports that not only, compared to 2019, mirrorless sales in Japan dropped since the beginning of 2020 but also that March 2020 figures show 49.5% less sales compared to March 2019. That’s a lot.

Brand-wise, we see Sony’s sales figures drop by 44.5%, Olympus’ by 54.9% and Canon’s by 32.3. Canon’s figures are most likely due to the enormous success the EOS M50 has in Japan (where it’s named Kiss M). On the other hand., Fujifilm‘s sales figures grow by 115.6%.

Almost 50% less sales means something. And it most likely means this industry wide down-spiral is set to last for a while. This is not the place to digress into the economical consequences of the global coronavirus pandemic. They will be serious, and not just for the imaging industry. For the time being it’s difficult to foresee what customers will do in the near future but I guess it’s safe to say that mirrorless cameras, or any other tech gadget, will probably not be a priority for a while for a lot of people. We feel close to these people and our hearts are with them.

Stay safe.

Canon Rumor: 5 New EOS M Lenses Might Be Announced Within Next 2 Years

Canon Eos M50 Mark Ii

Here is a Canon rumor we got about the future of the EOS M mirrorless camera system.

A new source told us that Canon is planning to expand the EF-M lens lineup with five new lenses. The commercial success of the Canon EOS M50 seems to have motivated Canon to develop new EF-M lenses.

The five lenses that Canon might release over the next two years are:

  • EF-M 15mm f/2 STM
  • EF-M 52mm f/2 STM
  • EF-M 62mm f/4 Macro IS STM
  • EF-M 18-45mm f/2.8-4 IS STM
  • EF-M 100-300mm f/5.6-8 IS STM

According to the source, the EF-M 52mm f/2 STM and EF-M 100-300mm f/5.6-8 IS STM where initially planned to be released in late 2020. The Coronavirus outbreak and the disruptions in supply and manufacturing chains will make it likely that both these lenses will be released in 2021 along with the other lenses.

The next camera Canon will release is the game changing EOS R5. All we know about the R5 is listed here. More Canon rumor stuff is listed here.

Stay tuned.

Which One Is The Best Entry-Level Mirrorless Camera? (Canon EOS M50 vs Fuji X-T200 vs Sony a6100)

Best Entry-level Mirrorless Camera

The best entry-level mirrorless camera. Hot question, isn’t it?

DPReview‘s Chris and Jordan compare the Fujifilm X-T200, the Sony a6100 and the Canon EOS M50. And the question is: which one is right for you? While we are (obviously) rooting for the EOS M50, the Fujifilm X-T200 might…well…be interesting too.

Latest BCN Rankings Show Canon Is Gaining Mirrorless Market Shares, Sony Still Behind

Mirrorless

Latest market figures shared by BCN show that Canon is still the camera alpha dog.

Canon’s market success is driven by the sals of the the Canon EOS M50 (KISS M in Japan). Canon’s latest APS-C mirrorless camera, the EOS M6 Mark II is already on rank 11. Sony is behind Canon and seems to struggle to keep up with Canon’s figures.
