Have Canon And Nikon Lost The Full Frame War? Latest Japan Market Figures Suggest So

Full Frame War

BCN rankings for the market figures 2019 in Japan are out. If there was a full frame war, there is only one winner.

If you look at the image on top you can clearly see that only one manufacturer managed to increase unit and value sales for compact cameras, APS-C cameras, and full frame cameras. Oh, it’s Sony.

Canon and Nikon sale figures are rather bad with the exception of the Canon’s full frame unit sales (up 6%, but value sales down 7%). Sony is now the leader in full frame camera sales (in Japan, but we can assume it reflects the global trend). No more full frame war.

If you wonder how big the share of full frame cameras is compared to other systems, have a look at the image below. You’ll see it’s much less than you might have thought (these are figures for the Japanese market).

Canon vs Sony vs Fuji vs Nikon: Continuous 4K Video Shooting With Eye AF

Eye Af

Geek alert! A Canon vs Sony vs Fuji vs Nikon shootout on Eye AF performance.

Here is a 22 minutes video where Hidema Nakajima compares the Eye AF of various mirrorless cameras. To be more precise, he compares the Eye AF performance while shooting 4K video. The compared cameras are the Canon EOS R, Nikon Z 6, Sony a9, and Fujifilm X-T3.

Canon released firmware updates for the Canon EOS R and EOS RP that dramatically improved AF performance. More Canon EOS R Eye AF comparison reviews are here and here.

Canon Seems To Be Lagging In Mirrorless Camera Sales 2018

Japanese Site Toyokeizai Published Some Statistics On The Mirrorless Camera Market In 2018. The Data Comes From Techno System Research,

Japanese site Toyokeizai published some statistics on the mirrorless camera market in 2018. The data comes from Techno System Research, a private marketing research company.

There is nothing really new here. Sony is the top dog in mirrorless sales, followed by Canon and the rest of the pack.

  • Sony 42.5%
  • Canon 19.8%
  • Fujifilm 17.5%
  • Olympus 8.4%
  • Panasonic 7.0%
  • Nikon 4.6%

A note of caution. I was not able to understand for sure if the used data refers to the Japanese market or to the global market, though I tend to believe it’s the latter.

Given that we are almost in 2020 I wonder if these stats really matter.

Latest BCN Rankings Show Canon Is Gaining Mirrorless Market Shares, Sony Still Behind

Mirrorless

Latest market figures shared by BCN show that Canon is still the camera alpha dog.

Canon’s market success is driven by the sals of the the Canon EOS M50 (KISS M in Japan). Canon’s latest APS-C mirrorless camera, the EOS M6 Mark II is already on rank 11. Sony is behind Canon and seems to struggle to keep up with Canon’s figures.
