Canon EOS R and Nikon Z7 Can Not Beat Sony a7 III When It Comes To Pure Dynamic Range Sensor Figures

Canon Eos R

At Photons To Photo you can compare sensor figures of various camera.

As you can see in the image above, the Sony a7 III is still the champion of pure sensor performance, beating the Canon EOS R and Nikon Z7 on dynamic range measures.. Which is a pity especially for Nikon, since they are using a sensor made by Sony.

Canon, designing and manufacturing their own sensors. gets closer to Sony’s sensor performance as ISO gets higher (but around ISO 32000 Sony gets the edge again).

Sensor performance figures do not tell the whole story, and the differences shown in the graph above are really minimal. When it comes to ergonomics, lens ecosystem, reliability, customer support, weather sealing, and whatever counts beyond sensor performance, Canon is still the the alpha dog in the pack.

Sony Says They Do Not Care About Competitors And Well Knew About Canon and Nikon’s Agenda

Sony A7R III

DPReview published an interview with Mr. Kenji Tanaka, VP and Senior General Manager of Sony’s Business Unit 1, Digital Imaging Group. The interview was taken at Photokina 2018.

Sony appears to be rather fond of their role in the industry.

Q: What is Sony doing that’s unique?

A: We are the world’s largest manufacturer of image sensors, and have developed many unique sensors. Looking at the Alpha 9, the stacked CMOS sensor is a good example of both a unique and innovative product. These kinds of things are a strength compared to our competitors.

How does Sony stand to the competition?

Q: How do new competitive full-frame mirrorless cameras affect your planning?

A: I welcome the shift in the market. Our vision is not to move the customer [from DSLR to mirrorless], it is to expand the market.

I don’t know what the impact of [Canon and Nikon entering the full-frame mirrrorless market] will be but we remain focused on creating new customers. That is our priority. Honestly speaking, I don’t care about competitors, I care about the customers. If customers need more functionality, or more quality, we’ll try to do it.

Later on in the interview Mr. Kenji Tanaka reminds how he always knew about Canon and Nikon’s entry in the full frame mirrorless arena.

Canon EOS R vs Sony a7 III For Video Productions – Which One Is Better?

Canon Eos R

Kinotika tested the video performance of the Canon EOS-R vs the Sony a7 III. Apparently, the Canon EOS R can not hold up to the Sony a7 III.

Video-wise, the reviewers see only two features of the Canon that beat Sony: Dual Pixel Autofocus and the fully articulated screen.

Well, what about the lenses, the reliability Canon gear, the ergonomics, the customer service, and all the rest that makes Canon beat any Sony camera? A bit of a fanboy video review, imo.

Image Quality Comparison: Canon EOS R vs EOS 5D4 vs EOS 6D2 vs Sony a7III vs Sony a7RIII

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

Tony & Chelsea Northrup compared the image quality of the new Canon EOS R with its siblings, the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II, and with the Sony a7 III and Sony a7R III.

The Canon EOS R definitely has a better image quality than the Sony a7 III in most conditions, with noticeably sharper images, even at high ISOs. However, the dynamic range of the EOS R has issues in shape of heavy banding when recovering shadows. This issue did not surface on the EOS 5D Mark IV (which one more times shows the EOS R does not have the same sensor as the 5D4). Dynamic range of the EOS R sensor is better than the Canon 6D Mark II.

Pre-orders for the Canon EOS R are live. Shipping is expected to start in October 2018.
