The Connect Station CS100 and the new Rebels – Canon’s Idea of Connectivity

Canon Rebel T6i and T6s Hands-On and First Impression Reviews

20150205_thumbL_eosrebelt6s_3q

The new Rebels (announcement). The Rebel T6s and Rebel T6i are scheduled to be available at the end of April 2015.

DPReview’s hands-on review. From their first impression:

Personally I’d spring for the pricier T6s. Although the core of its specification is the same as the cheaper Rebel, I like having an LCD display on the top, and I’m used to twin control dials from Canon’s higher-end cameras. I don’t shoot much video, but when I do it’s mostly spontaneous ‘grab shots’ and I dislike fussing with manual focus.

Whatever your personal preferences, it’s certainly true that on paper at least, both of these new Rebels are much more convincing competition for the likes of Nikon’s new D5500 and an increasingly capable crop of sub-$1000 enthusiast mirrorless cameras. It remains to be seen whether the new Canon 24MP can match the excellent Sony 24MP sensor in the a6000 and Nikon D5500 in terms of dynamic range, but we’d expect it to be competitive in terms of detail capture and most likely high ISO performance, too. And assuming we’re right about this, that’s great news.

Next Canon Rebel T6i/EOS 750D to Come in Two Variants with 24MP Sensor? (CW1)

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

Rumor has it that the next Canon Rebel (EOS 750D in Europe) will come to market with two different models, the 750D and the 760D.

Canon Rumors posted a spec list:

  • Full HD movies, MP4 format, HDR movie, automatic shooting modes (EOS 750D )
  • 24.2MP sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor
  • ISO 100-12,800 range
  • Flicker Detection technology
  • Five frames per second continuous shooting mode
  • 19 cross-type AF point system
  • Hybrid CMOS AF III
  • Rear Quick Control Dial (EOS 760D )
  • Creative movie modes (EOS 760D )
  • Wi-Fi and NFC

A spec list that sounds to good for a Rebel/EOS xxxD camera. And a 24MP sensor is listed. That would mean the next Rebel gets a new sensor tech (at least resolution-wise), instead of the current 20MP sensor featured on the EOS 70D and EOS 7D Mark II. Unusual to introduce a new sensor on an entry-level camera. No US naming scheme is mentioned. To some degree, the possible split in two different models reminds me of a rumor I posted a few weeks ago, suggesting Canon will release a new DSLR between the EOS 750D and the EOS 70D.

Interestingly enough, the (supposedly) higher model of the two, the 760D, has  a rear control dial. We saw such a controller on a so far undisclosed DSLR that leaked a few weeks ago in some Connect Station CS100 promotion material. See the pic below.

CR themselves rate the rumor very low, and I agree. The spec list looks more like a wish-list. However, the possible split in two variants of the next Rebel is in some way related to the rumor of a DSLR positioned between the 750D and the 70D.

Canon Rebel T6i/EOS 750D To Be Announced For CP+ (CW4, and more mention of 11-24mm f/4L coming)

750D
Is this the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D?

Canon Rumors got word that Canon will announce the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D shortly before CP+. They write:

We’ve received confirmation that the camera that has appeared in a recent Canon leak is indeed the next Rebel and we should see the announcement sometime before CP+ in February. No specifications for the camera were given.

The same rumor reported by CR also suggest that the DSLR Canon leaked last week (images above and below) in a Connect Station CS100 promo video, is indeed the Rebel T6i/EOS 750D. If true, this means Canon is moving the Rebel line upmarket, since the depicted DSLR has a lock slider and a top LCD display, both features usually seen starting from the semi-pro line-up. And since it is used together with the CS100 we can also assume it will have NFC. The image below also depicts the supposed T6i/750D.

CR’s rumor also confirms our rumor posted a few days ago that Canon will announce the (already leaked) EF 11-24mm f/4L lens for CP+, suggesting a price of $2899 in USA and $3099 in Canada.

Canon Set To Announce A New DSLR Between the EOS 750D and 70D? (CW3)

Canon RumorCanon Rumor

I have been told (thanks) that Canon will announce a new APS-C DSLR that will be positioned between the upcoming EOS 750D/Rebel T6i and the existing EOS 70D. The source told me that this will be a 2-digit DSLR, i.e. a DSLR in the xxD line-up. Could this be the mysterious DSLR that we saw in some Canon promo video and pics?

Moreover, I got also word that the EOS 750D should be announced soon, possibly at CP+ next month. I got no candidate announcement date for the new APS-C DSLR that will be positioned between the 750D and the 70D.

Canon’s new (and then latest) APS-C line-up would hence consist of the following cameras:

  • EOS 700D
  • EOS 750D
  • EOS ??D
  • EOS 70D
  • EOS 7D II

I am a bit puzzled because of the naming scheme. If this new APS-C DSLR will be, feature-wise, between the EOS 750D/T6i and the EOS 70D I can hardly figure out the moniker it will have. If it is going to be named 80D it would suggest it is the replacement for the 70D, which is not only far too early (the replacement) but also suggests a camera with new features compared to the 70D. So maybe it will be a specced down version of the 70D. But would that make sense?
