(CW3) Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Coming in August 2015?

We know that Canon will announce the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R next week – but what’s going on with the EOS 5D Mark IV?

Northlight Images says they have been told that the EOS 5D Mark IV will be announced in August. The EOS 5D Mark IV is said to come with improved video and still performance and features, and with just a modest increase in resolution.

As we reported first, the EOS 5D Mark IV will most probably have 4k video recording. This will be a DSLR oriented to the sport, action and event photographers. I am sure the EOS 5D Mark IV will push Canon already exceptional low-light performance to new boundaries.

Canon Wants to Dominate the Mirrorless Market by 2017

Dicahub posted an interesting analysis of a BNC report on shares in the mirrorless market in Japan.

Two interesting things. If you look at the graph above, you can see that Sony lost market shares towards the end of 2014, and that Canon gained shares (to a small degree). The other interesting thing, not visible in the graph but mentioned in the original BNC article, is that Canon wants to become the leader of the mirrorless market by 2017. During the period 2015-2017 Canon is targeting an annual revenue growth of 4% in 2017 to 741 billion yen sales, with an operating profit of 37 billion yen.

Next week Canon will announce the EOS M3, and we will see if Canon’s next MILC is a step in the right direction.

After the leaked specs and image of the upcoming Canon EOS 5Ds and 5Ds R, I got some more tidbits about the specs (thanks).

Here is the new specification list (lines in bold are the new specs):

  • 50.6MP full-size CMOS sensor (53MP total count)
  • 5DS R is without low-pass filter
  • Magnesium alloy body
  • Dust and water sealed
  • Dual processor DIGIC6
  • Regular sensitivity ISO 100-6400, expand to 12800
  • Continuous shooting 5 frames / sec.
  • High precision 61-point AF, 41 cross type
  • EOS iTR AF
  • 150,000 pixel RGB + IR photometry sensor
  • Added “fine detail” to the Picture Style
  • 1.3x and 1.6x crop shooting mode
  • Customizable “Quick Control Screen”
  • Time-lapse movie
  • Anti-flicker
  • Interval Timer
  • Bulb timer
  • No headphone terminal
  • No DAF
  • No HDMI output for video (clean out) Not to compete with 5D III other video features are same.

The source also stated that the sensor is made by Canon using a new CMOS manufacturing process. I rate this rumor CW3 (added specs and sensor stuff). This is post is just a small update, the discussion is going on with the first post about the leaked specs and image.

I got some specs (thanks) for a new Powershot camera, the Powershot G3 X (or G1 X Mark III). I can not yet confirm it is the anticipated large sensor Powershot. Given the high ISOs it may well be. There is no “G2 X”, and both the [shoplink 1785]PowerShot G1 X[/shoplink] and [shoplink 19768]PowerShot G1 X Mark II[/shoplink] had an 1.5″ sensor. In any case, this is one of the new Powershot cameras Canon will announce next week.
