Canon UK Launches Competition to Find Ultimate Summer Storyteller

canon rumors

Canon press release:

Canon UK commissioned the research to mark the launch of its 365 Days of Summer competition to find a storyteller to spend a year identifying and living 365 new stories across the globe as part of its new Live For The Story brand positioning.

Roald Dahl, the creator of classics such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach has topped the poll of the greatest authors, songwriters, artists and photographers. Visual storytellers including graffiti artist Banksy, Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg and legendary cartoonist Walt Disney also featured in the top 50.

The research also showed a staggering 94 per cent of adults enjoy a good story with the average adult telling four stories a day, through words, conversation and with photos.

Matthew Searle – Country Director, Canon UK and Ireland said: “You can’t beat a good story, whether it’s words in a book, photographs, film or simply through conversation. Roald Dahl in particular may be well known for his words, but the images which accompanied many of his children’s books have helped to paint a picture for children for generations.

“As technology evolves, stories are now so much more than just the written word and people today have a variety of ways to tell their story and make sure it lives on. Whether they are to inform, relay a message or just to entertain, there are stories which will go on to be told for generations to come. At Canon we celebrate storytelling in all its forms and with the launch of our Live For The Story campaign we want to encourage people to tell their story and live every experience to the fullest no matter how insignificant.”

Canon is looking for someone to fill a very unique position as it begins its search for the ultimate storyteller. The lucky person will spend a year chasing summer across the globe in order to identify 365 inspiring stories. Applications for this unique role will be taken via Instagram and judged by actress, producer, musician and storyteller, Zoë Kravitz.

The successful candidate will chase summer all over the world, visiting destinations from Lisbon to Melbourne to Brazil, curating their own story of the summer.

Those who think they have what it takes to inspire people to find their own stories can apply by sharing their most memorable summer story on Instagram with the story behind it (no more than 50 words), tagging @CanonUK and #liveforthestory. Submissions will be judged on a number of elements including storytelling ability, visual appeal, originality and inspirational qualities. The successful candidate will be required to travel the world chasing summer in order to identify 365 inspiring stories throughout the course of the job. The role is all expenses paid and, of course, offers a holiday allowance of 365 days per annum.

Canon’s storyteller will be tasked with identifying 365 new summer stories throughout the year, bringing back the art of storytelling and inspiring people to make the most of every moment in their life. The journey they choose is for them to decide, it will be their story to create and inspire.

Matthew Searle – Country Director, Canon UK and Ireland said: “Every moment has the potential to be important, even more so in the summer when we are open to new challenges and experiences. We are on the hunt for someone to inspire us, to help us ‘Live For The Story’ every day and ensure none of us miss those special moments.”

The Canon EOS M6 is a great camera in many respects, DPReview reports

Canon EOS M6

Canon EOS M6: [shopcountry 43815]

At a glance:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 7 Image Processor
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • Full HD 1080p Video Recording at 60 fps
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Up to 9 fps Shooting and ISO 25600
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

DPReview put the Canon EOS M6 under scrutiny and posted their full review.

According to the review, it seems the EOS M6 may become a vlogger’s favorite camera. From the conclusion:

If size is an ultimate priority, the M6 is a promising and powerful backup or second body for the established Canon shooter. It’s the company’s smallest camera to feature its latest 24MP APS-C sensor with Dual Pixel AF, the controls and touchscreen interface are a joy and many smaller EF (and -S) lenses pair up very nicely. A combination of camera lock-up and live view lags in continuous shooting are likely to be a little off-putting for more action-oriented photographers, but otherwise, the M6 is an easy recommendation.

Many Canon cameras are favorites for vloggers due to robust face tracking and pleasing (if not supremely detailed) output, and the EOS M6 proves fairly competent when used in this regard. But there are some compromises like iffy ergo’vlog’ics, and there are plenty of other mirrorless options to consider that shoot 4K video. It must be said though, none will offer the impressively reliable and easy-to-use continuous autofocus performance that Dual Pixel AF provides. Read the review at DPReview.

Image quality analysis and tests are here. The Canon EOS M6 gets a Silver Award and an overall score of 80%.

The video below, Vlogging with the EOS M6, was recorded at 1080/60p using only the internal microphones for audio.

Some Canon mirrorless full-frame camera talk

canon rumors

Some new murmurings about the upcoming Canon mirrorless full-frame camera emerged over the web.

Although the rumor has a low credibility ranking, it is never the less interesting to see what’s suggested (some specs leaked first here on CW)

  • Canon may announce full frame mirrorless camera for Photokina 2018 (September)
  • EF mount will be native (we reported)
  • New exclusive image sensor for the camera.
  • New sensor technology required for the EF mount in a mirrorless application
  • No new “dedicated” lenses, but mirrorless will be “considered in all future EF lens design”
  • 4K video is considered a necessary feature in all full frame cameras
  • One full frame mirrorless camera body to start
  • There is testing at Canon of a more hybrid approach between DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras.

It’s difficult to discern if this is a “real rumor” (whatever that means) or if the list above is made up from logical thinking. However, each of the points above makes sense, some like native EF mount and 4K video were suggested before, and are very high on most people’s wish list.

Please note also this. 2017 is the year when Canon is supposed to eventually announce the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. While I hope there will be an EOS 6D Mark II, I also got more than one suggestion that Canon may not release the EOS 6D Mark II but instead announce a mirrorless full-frame camera.

The latest announcement rumor for the EOS 6D Mark II is July 2017, which I do not really believe to be true. We are just to close to July and still nothing reliable leaked. That’s weird.

We know very little about the EOS 6D Mark II (if there will ever be one). The list below is what was passed over to us in the last two years.

Some of the specifications above may well apply also to a mirrorless full-frame camera.

Stay tuned!

This jaw-dropping video shows the full cloud inversion, a rare phenomenon in the Grand Canyon, and was shot with Canon gear

The amazing video above shows a rare phenomenon known as the full cloud inversion. Harun Mehmedinovic tells us what the phenomenon is about, and how they produced the video:

Millions of visitors a year come to Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the most visited national park in the western United States. However, on extremely rare days when cold air is trapped in the canyon and topped by a layer of warm air, which in combination with moisture and condensation, form the phenomenon referred to as the full cloud inversion. In what resembles something between ocean waves and fast clouds, Grand Canyon is completely obscured by fog, making the visitors feel as if they are walking on clouds.

This video was filmed as part of SKYGLOW, an ongoing crowdfunded quest to explore the effects and dangers of urban light pollution in contrast with some of the most incredible dark sky areas in North America. This project is being produced in collaboration with International Dark-Sky Association, a non-profit fighting for the preservation of night skies around the globe.

Canon [shoplink 27766]EOS 5Ds R[/shoplink] and [shoplink 2431]EOS 5D Mark III[/shoplink] cameras and Canon lenses were used to shot the film, sponsored by Canon USA, aided by Alpine Labs‘ Michron & Pulse, powered by Paul C. Buff Vagabond Mini. LRTimelapse was used to process some of the shots.

Original video premiered on BBC Earth. High resolution stills can be found here.
