A Professional, EOS-1D X Equivalent Canon EOS R Model Might Come Earlier Than Expected

Canon Eos R Firmware Update

While we are still waiting for the high resolution Canon EOS R model, the rumor mill has suggestions about the EOS R model coming after.

Apparently Canon has decided to accelerate the development of a professional EOS R model, i.e. a mirrorless camera that can compare with Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X Mark II.

The same rumor suggests this EOS-1D X equivalent full frame mirrorless camera could be announced along with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, and it could happen in the first or second quarter of 2020. To be honest, Canon itself said they might make such a camera.

Our take: take it with a grain of salt. EOS R related rumors abound and so far the reliability is very low. The source of the rumor also ranks it low.

We now know what gear Canon is set to announced next. Stay tuned.

Next Canon Gear To Be Announced (PowerShot G7 X Mark III, RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM, EOS RP kit)

Canon Eos Rp Best Mirrorless

Canon is set to announce new gear soon.

According to Nokishita, this is what we can expect in the near future:

  • The Canon PowerSHot G7 X Mark III
  • Canon RF 24-240mm f4-6.3 IS USM lens (EOS R mirrorless system)
  • Canon EW-78F lens hood
  • A new Canon EOS RP kit with the Canon RF 24-240mm f4-6.3 IS USM lens

The PowerShot G7 X Mark III already leaked through certification authorities, images also have already leaked.

I’m glad to see that Canon will soon release an affordable zoom for their EOS R mirrorless system. That will for sure be very appreciated by users.

No 4K Crop On Future Canon APS-C DSLRs (Canon EOS 90D)?

APS-C EOS 80d Canon Eos 90d

Back in February we reported that Canon might replace the EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II with one new camera for both lineups. The camera would be the Canon EOS 90D.

Rumors following suggested that the EOS 7D lineup is set to be abandoned by Canon and that instead we might see a mirrorless offering.

Latest rumors address one of the strongest criticism to Canon’s implementation of 4K video on APS-C cameras, i.e. the evil crop factor, stirring heated discussions on the web. It seems the next Canon APS-C DSLR, which most likely will be the EOS 90D, will record 4K video at 32MP and with no significant crop applied.

We expect Canon to announce the EOS 90D in August or September 2019. The rumored EOS 90D specifications are listed here. All EOS 90D rumors are listed here. All Canon rumors are listed here.

Canon EOS R for Astrophotography Coming?

Astrophotography

Does Canon have an EOS R model dedicated to astrophotography on their agenda? This is what a new rumor suggests.

A Canon EOS R model for astrophotography is plausible, at least. A mirrorless camera makes astrophotography easier for some aspects. No mirror mechanism. However, the same can be achieved on virtually any modern DSLR by using live view and locking the mirror.

As far as we know there is no Canon camera dedicated to astrophotography and with a full frame sensor. The most recent Canon DSLR dedicated to this peculiar kind of photography is the Canon EOS 60Da.

The EOS 60Da uses a specially made infrared blocking optical low-pass filter that allows the light normally blocked by a typical DSLR’s filter to be captured by the camera’s sensor. An EOS R dedicated to astrophotography would most likely feature a modified full frame sensor, i.e. different for those seen so far. Or might this astrophotography-wise EOS R just be the rumored high resolution EOS R model?

While being a rumor that might come to reality, the source gave it a low rating. There is also the fact that actually there are no native RF lenses suited for astrophotography, so take it with a grain of salt.

Photos shot with the Canon EOS 60Da are listed on Flickr.

What To Expect From Canon In 2019 (80D/7D2 replacement, new EOS M)

Canon Eos M5 Mark II

Another mention suggesting Canon is set to replace both the EOS 80D and the EOS 7D Mark II with one camera. There might be no EOS 7D Mark III. The DSLR replacing the EOS 80D and 7D Mark II is expected by August 2019.

What’s new is that Canon might announce a new, feature rich and aggressively specced EOS M camera. Hopefully this will put an end to the “EOS R with APS-C sensor” speculations. The EOS M is Canon’s APS-C system and we think it is highly unlikely an EOS R camera with crop sensor will ever surface.

We also expect a new EOS R camera towards the end of 2019. According to our sources it will feature a high resolution sensor.

Finally, there are still five RF lenses that Canon has already announced both not yet released.

All EOS 7D Mark III rumors listed here, EOS 90D rumors listed here.

Stay tuned.
