What’s Next From Canon? (EOS RX/RS, EOS 90D, new Rebel, Cinema Camera, EOS M, 1DX III

Eos 90d

What to expect next from Canon besides the Canon EOS 90D? Let’s sum it up what might happen in the next 3-4 months.

First and foremost, Canon will most likely announce the Canon EOS 90D (all rumors), the APS-C DSLR that will replace both the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II (we reported). Some specifications for the EOS 90D surfaced.

Canon will also release a new Cinema camera. We think it will be the EOS C500 Mark II but the EOS C300 Mark III (rumored to feature 8K) may also be on Canon’s release radar.

Is a new Canon Rebel DSLR also due? Might be, though we have no reliable intel so far. The same can be said about the next EOS M model. We were expecting a replacement for the EOS M5/M6, but so far nothing appeared on the horizon. The EOS M system is not dead (as many wish/suggest), Sigma just announced they will port three primes to the EF-M mount.

There are two upcoming Canon EOS R cameras. One, which might be announced towards the end of 2019, is the long rumored high resolution EOS R. Some people suggested this camera might be the Canon EOS RS. The other new EOS R model that’s rumored is a pro-oriented, EOS-1D X equivalent full frame mirrorless camera. Canon itself said they might make such a camera. Canon EOS RX surfaced as name suggestion in various spots over the Internet

Finally, we can be reasonably sure that Canon will announced the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III before the Summer Olympics 2020.

Stay tuned…

Sigma Announced Three DN DC Lenses For The Canon EOS M System

Canon EOS M System

Sigma announced it will port three of their DN DC lenses to the Canon EOS M system.

The first three lenses to become available for the EOS M are

  • SIGMA 16mm f/1.4 DC DN
  • SIGMA 30mm f/1.4 DC DN
  • SIGMA 56mm f/1.4 DC DN

Most likely the lenses will not have a new lens design, but having three f/1.4 lenses for the EOS M is great news. Looks like the clickbait rumors about an APS-C EOS R model might eventually disappear.

What Is Value Angle And Why Does Fujifilm Think Canon Has The Edge With The EOS M System

Value Angle

Ever heard about the value angle?

Without diving into too much engineering stuff, the value angle is a computed parameter that has a strong influence on the design of a camera mount and hence of the whole system. But there is more. It also gives a glance about what can be made lens design wise and how far optical engineers can push the design. In one word: it expresses the potentiality of a camera system.

The idea behind it is that a larger value is generally speaking more advantageous and that it allows the design of lenses that provide a particularly high image quality. Oh, and it’s a concept invented by Fujifilm.

The formula for calculating the value angle is:

ValueAngle = 2 × arctan ((2 × flange distance) / (mount diameter – sensor diagonal))

In a recent Fujifilm summit, the company introduced the concept of value angle to discuss the X System. And it turns out Canon has a real winner here with the EOS M system. If you have a look at the table below, you’ll see Canon’s EOS M mount ranks first when it comes to this very parameter, i.e. it has the most flexible lens mount (please note: “Kleinbild” means “full frame”).

Next Canon EOS M Camera(s) Coming In August 2019 (EOS M500)?

Canon Eos M5 Mark II

A followup to the rumor of upcoming EOS M cameras replacements surfaced over the web.

It’s suggested Canon might announce a replacement at least for the Canon EOS M5, while the EOS M6 seems not to be scheduled for replacement. Moreover, Canon might announce an EOS M model that’s below the EOS M50, the Canon EOS M500. Two new EF-M lenses might also be announced.

Take this with a grain of salt, and stay tuned.

Metabones Announced EF to EOS M Speed Booster ULTRA 7.1x

Speed Booster

Metabones announced a new Speed Booster (EF to EF-M mount). Metabones EF-EOS M Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x is available right now for $479.

Press release:

Metabones® Introduces EF to EOS M (EF-EFM Mount) Speed Booster® ULTRA 0.71x

Vancouver, Canada, May 2, 2019 – Metabones introduces the latest member of its award-winning Speed Booster family of DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) to mirrorless lens mount adapters, EF-EOS M Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x. Full-frame Canon EF-mount lenses are now one stop faster, 0.71x wider and with increased MFT (note 1) on Canon EOS M cameras. The 4k/UHD video crop on EOS M50 can also be mitigated with third-party APS-C lenses using this Metabones Speed Booster. Some Canon EF-S lenses may be modified to fit on the Speed Booster but Metabones cannot be held liable for any issues arising from modifications. Using APS-C lenses with Speed Booster for still photography or full HD videography may result in vignetting.

Ever since the first Speed Booster was introduced, there have been DIY attempts to modify it to fit EOS M cameras. The turnkey solution Metabones now offers adds a number of refinements:

  • The optical housing is redesigned for perfect fit on EOS M.
  • The EXIF metadata is changed to reflect the faster aperture (note 2) and shorter focal length.
  •  The autofocus speed of the lens is adjusted and optimized for the change in focal length and aperture to ensure the best performance. This is especially important for dual-pixel autofocus (DPAF) in video mode.
  • A ‘chip’ mode is added so that the user may store the metadata of a fully mechanical manual lens in the adapter.
  • A LED indicates operational status of the Speed Booster.

Since both the lens and the camera speak the same protocol most features are supported with the exception of lens aberration correction, which is automatically turned off.
