Canon Set To Announce A New Camera Soon (PowerShot or EOS M)

Canon Rumors Color Calibration

Canon will soon announce a new Camera soon, likely next week.

For the time being we do not know if Canon is going to announce a new PowerShot camera (the PowerShot G7 X Mark III would be a candidate) or a replacement for the EOS M5 or EOS M50. Replacement for the EOS 80D or EOS 7D Mark II are less likely. Don’t expect Canon’s upcoming high resolution EOS R camera until Fall 2019.

More to come soon, stay tuned.

Canon Not Raising Resolution On Future APS-C Cameras, Keeping 24MP?

Canon Eos M5 Mark II

A new rumor from the series of tubes says that the next Canon APS-C cameras will feature an image sensor with the same resolution as currently the latest APS-C Canon cameras have, i.e. 24MP.

The 24MP sensor is said to be “all-new” but there are no specifications so far. The “all-new” sensor is supposed to be featured in the upcoming replacements for the EOS 80D, 7D Mark II, and the EOS M series.

What “all-new” means is unclear. Although we spotted some patents referring to Quad Pixel AF and stacked sensor technology, it’s unlikely Canon will feature it in upcoming cameras.

Stay tuned.

Canon Patent For 8-15mm Fisheye Lens For APS-C Mirrorless

Canon Patent

Canon patent application US20190094490 describes the optical formula for an 8-15mm fisheye lens. Given the back focus distance this is most likely a lens for the EOS M system.

From the patent literature:

In order for a zoom lens to have a wide angle of view and achieve high optical performance across the entire zoom range and the entire object distance range, it is important to appropriately set the elements constituting the zoom lens. For example, it is important to appropriately set the zoom type (the number of lens units and the refractive power of each lens unit), the lens configuration, and the lens unit selected for focusing, and so on.

If these configurations are not appropriate, achieving a wide angle of view will increase the size of the whole system and also increase the variations of various aberrations caused by zooming and focusing. It will therefore be difficult to achieve high optical performance across the entire zoom range and the entire object distance range.

For example, for a fisheye zoom lens having an imaging half angle of view of 85 degrees or more, a meniscus lens having an extremely strong negative refractive power needs to be disposed closest to the object side within the first lens unit in order to take light rays into the zoom lens from such a wide angle of view. Generally, lenses in a first lens unit not only have strong refractive powers but also have large effective diameters. Thus, when it comes to a fisheye zoom lens, its first lens unit is heavy and large as well. Then, if the entirety or part of the first lens unit (the closest lens unit to the object side) is used as a focus lens unit, quick focusing will be difficult.

Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM Review (simple yet reliable lens, Photography Blog)

Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM

Photography Blog reviewed the Canon EF-M 32mm F/1.4 STM, Canon’s latest addition to the EOS M lens line-up. And the first serious prime for the EOS M system.

From their conclusion:

The Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens is the ideal lens for Canon EOS M users who are looking for a new prime lens to fit into their kit bag. It’s a simple, yet reliable, “nifty fifty” type lens by the time you take into account the crop factor of using it with an APS-C sized sensor.

[…] with lenses like this, Canon shows that it is still thinking about the various different consumers it is trying to cater for.

The Canon EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM is only the third prime lens to be made for the M series, and thanks to its focal length and wide aperture, it has a range of practical applications. You might consider it a portrait lens – albeit best suited to environmental type portraits – as well as for low light, pet portraits, still life, food and more.
