Samyang 85mm f/1.8 UMC CS announced (Canon EOS M System)

Samyang MF 85mm F/1.8

Samyang (aka Rokinon, and other brand names) announce the Samyang 85mm f/1.8 UMC CS lens for mirrorless camera systems, Canon EOS M included. The Samyang 85mm f/1.8 will be available in September 2018.

Press release:

Samyang unveils the MF 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS lens for mirrorless cameras with APS-C crop sensors

Samyang Optics launches a new manual-focus lens for mirrorless shooters: The MF 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS is designed for use with APS-C sensor mirrorless cameras in the following mounts: Sony E, Fujifilm X, Canon M, and Micro-Four-Thirds. It is competitively priced and light-weight. This medium telephoto lens inherits the renowned image quality of Samyang’s manual focus series and also boasts beautiful out of focus bokeh and availability for a variety of cameras.

Ideal portrait lens, with a fast, bright maximum aperture

This manual-focus 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS lens is a medium telephoto lens, with a similar angle of-view to a 135mm lens when compared to full-frame cameras. The Samyang MF 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS is designed with 9 lens elements in 7 groups and it delivers high resolution from the centre to the corners of the image. A high-refractive and an extra-low dispersion element, along with Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC) help minimise chromatic aberrations and deliver clear, vibrant images. This lens is ideal for portraits, with beautiful bokeh from its floating-element system. Its low-light performance and shallow depth-of-field are especially useful features.

Wide range of uses, with crystal-clear resolution

The compact and light-weight design offers the portability and comfort needed for a long day’s shooting. This lens would be the ideal choice for keen photographers who want to capture everyday moments in high-resolution. The Samyang MF 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS has a host of features including its outstanding optical performance. Its wide range of uses include portraits and other close-ups such as food, as well as landscapes and many other situations.

More fun with Manual Focus lenses

The MF 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS lens is perfect for shooters who want to have more involvement and express their own characteristics through their images. The Samyang MF 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS weighs in at just over 300g and measures approximately 8cm long (without the hood and lens caps). Photographers can expect superb, emotional and unique images from this compact companion.

The original Canon EOS M can shoot 2.5K raw video with Magic Lantern, and it’s impressing

Canon Eos M

Warning: the sd_uhs module referenced below is currently highly experimental and can destroy your sd card or camera. There have been instances of sd cards breaking. Magic Lantern does not recommend its use at the moment because of the risk involved.

I’m reporting this because Magic Lantern‘s work deserves it, and because I’m an old school hacker and can’t help getting excited by stuff like this. Computer science was made by this sort of guys, not by fancy dudes like Apple’s or the likes. I’ve been there since the beginning and I am pretty sure to understand the value of what these skilled hackers are doing.

So, here is another amazing hack by the Magic Lantern team, showcased by Synth & Sundry in the video below. It’s truly impressing: a Magic Lantern SD UHS overclock hack test on a the first Canon EOS M (2013). Shot at 2520×1080, 5x zoom mode, 24 fps, 12 bit lossless compressed raw using sd_uhs module. Not bad, eh?

It may be true that Canon cripples their tech when they want it, but still, this code hacking proofs what Canon’s sensor tech can deliver. Even on the so much disgraced original Canon EOS M (which I still proudly own and never will get rid off).

Again: do not try this if you don’t exactly know what you are doing. This is experimental stuff and it may seriously harm your camera, I do not encourage you to try to apply this hack.

Kudos Magic Lantern for the hacking! If you dare and want to know more, have a look at Magic Lantern’s download page.

We covered Magic Lantern’s work, and they have a forum where you can learn more.

Canon EOS M50 review (excellent color reproduction, ePhotozine)

Canon Eos M50 Mark Ii

Canon EOS M50 at a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • UHD 4K and HD 720p120 Video Recording
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • ISO 100-25600, Extended ISO 51200
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

ePhotozine reviewed Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors), the company’s first consumer cam featuring 4K video.

In the conclusion they write:

The Canon EOS M50 offers a compact, DSLR styled mirrorless camera, with an updated 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor, which gives excellent image quality, with the same excellent colour reproduction that you get with Canon EOS DSLRs. You also get high-speed continuous shooting, 143 focus points, and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder. It’s also one of the cheapest Canon cameras to record 4K video, and the side mic socket will make it appealing for those who want to record video.

If you want to use Canon EF lenses, with an adapter, on a smaller camera body, or want to use one of the EF-M lenses, then the Canon EOS M50 is a compact option with great levels of performance, and is an enjoyable camera to use. It’s just frustrating that in order to get the best from the camera you have to use the EOS-EF-M adapter, due to the lack of native Canon EF-M lenses available. Read the review…

The Canon EOS M50 is now shipping, starting at $779.

Yet Again a Recycled Rumor Breaks the News

Canon Rumors

Again, an old rumor seasoned with some common sense made its round on the Internet, sold as breaking news. You guess, it’s about Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera, likely the most abused rumor since I started this site.

News outlets happily reported (again) that Canon is working on a full frame mirrorless camera, that prototypes are out, and that we will see this camera within a year. Well, nothing new here. People following CW knows that. We are reporting every bit we get about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera since 2014. It’s a pity that some big news outlets stubbornly ignore us.

The non-rumor we are talking about (which you shouldn’t have issues to find) states that

  1. A Canon full frame mirrorless camera is coming – We know that since almost 2 years, we extensively reported about
  2. Prototypes of a Canon full frame mirrorless camera are undergoing field tests – We know that since over a year, we reported many times
  3. Canon may announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year – We know since a while and reported it. Even Sony’s CEO said that Canon will announce a FF mirrorless within a year. Anyone involved in photography on this terraqueous globe of ours knows it.

If you have ever worked in R&D (Research & Development) then you know that prototypes (of electronic gear) are field-tested a long time before the final product goes to market, and that usually there are more versions of such prototypes. Depending by the criticality, electronic gear like digital cameras may be tested through prototypes years before it is announced. I am sure an important camera like Canon’s (hopefully) upcoming FF MILC has seen many prototypes coming and going, and not since a few months. And one more thing: the scope of prototypes is to get it right in the final product.

Besides all the murmuring and rumor-recycling, we know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

Stay tuned, we keep you posted with the important stuff.
