Canon EOS R5 To Launch Before Olympics 2020, And Here Is A Hands-On Image

Canon Eos R5 Rumor

According to Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun (aka newswitch) Canon will release the Canon EOS R5 to the general public before the Summer Olympics 2020 begin.

It seems Canon is trying to push their mirrorless technology into the hands of professional photographers. The (machine translated) article says:

Canon has decided to launch the EOS R5, a full-size mirrorless camera under development compatible with 8K video shooting, as early as possible before the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. The support system for equipment rental and maintenance is planned to be the largest ever sport event. For professionals, single-lens reflex cameras are mainly used, but use of mirrorless, which is excellent in quietness and weight reduction, is also progressing. The Tokyo Olympics aims to exceed 70% in the use of news cameras.

The Canon EOS R5 development was announced a few weeks ago. And we are all waiting to see and learn more about what to us seems a game changer in the industry.

Stay tuned.

Five Canon RF Lenses Are Coming, SKUs Show Up At Certification Authority

Canon Lenses Rf RF 100-500mm F/4.5-7.1L IS

We knew there was a bunch of new Canon RF lenses on Canon’s release agenda. Now we can be sure.

Nokishita spotted five (5) SKUs for upcoming RF mount lenses as they showed up at a Russian certificaiton authority.

  • 3986C005
  • 3987C005
  • 4112C005
  • 4113C005
  • 4114C005

While we can not really associate these SKUs with lenses, we know that at least one of the SKUs above refers to the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS. We also can rather safely assume that the SKUs starting with “411” refer to RF mount lenses. The SKUs starting with “398” might be the two RF lens extenders announced along with the Canon EOS R5.

What is a SKU? Wikipedia has a short article.

Canon 2020 – What Is Coming Next (EOS R6, EOS R5s, Lenses)?

Canon EOS R5 Price

2020 started pretty good for Canon. Two important cameras have been announced, the EOS-1d X Mark III and EOS R5 (development announcement). Time to sum up all rumors and see what we can expect next.

We already know that a Canon EOS R6 full frame mirrorless camera is rumored. The EOS R6 is rumored to get announced in May 2020, and a small set of supposed specifications is making its rounds on the web.

  • 20mp full frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
  • 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic.
  • 4K@60p
  • New battery (might be the same as the EOS R5)
  • Announcement in May 2020
  • Starts shipping in June 2020

Not sure how reliable this spec list might be.

Next is the long rumored high resolution EOS R body, supposedly named either EOS R5s or EOS R3 by the Internet folks. Our sources told us this EOS R model might have a sensor resolution of 80MP. Rumored announcement timeframe are the last months of 2020.

There will be new RF lenses in 2020. Canon itself published a RF mount lens roadmap along with the EOS-1D X Mark III announcement. You can see it below. And we think the chart below is missing some lenses.

We think Canon will eventually release some RF lenses not listed in the chart above, but for the time being there is no reliable intel about.

Finally, EOS M lenses might get announced too. And here too so far we do not have reliable information.

Stay tuned.

Canon EOS R5: Crippled, Cropped Video, Focus And FPS Limitations, Says Matt Granger

Canon EOS R5 Price

After the Canon EOS R5 development announcement, we know that at least some of the rumored specifications are real.

Never the less, Matt Granger thinks Canon will eventually cripple the EOS R5, i.e. video is cropped, limitations on fps and focus, and whatnot. He explains his thoughts in the video below.

All just a hype? Or can we expect the EOS R5 will be the game changing full frame mirrorless camera its specifications suggest? Sound off in the comment section.

A few days ago we were tipped with a French language online shop where the EOS R5 is listed at €9,999. Likely a mistake.

You can get notified when the Canon EOS R5 will be available for preorder.

Upcoming Canon EOS R5 Price Listed At €9,999 (mistake or real?)

Canon EOS R5 Price

Could it be possible that the upcoming Canon EOS R5 price is set at €9,999?

Luxembourg based site Photo-Mirgain.lu lists the Canon EOS R5 at exactly this price, €9,999 (approx US$10,829, and for the body only). We think (i.e. we strongly hope) this is either a mistake or just a placeholder price.

What do you think, is this the real Canon EOS R5 price?

Thanks for the tip!
