Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L Review (a seriously good lens)

Canon Rf Mount Canon RF 50mm F/1.2L Review Canon Rf Lenses

Here is a Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L review. This lens for the EOS R system is an optical masterpiece, heavy, bulky, and pricey. Never the less, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L is a remarkable lens, made to showcase the capabilities of the RF mount.

Ted Forbes of The Art of Photography discusses all the goods and amazing features of the super fast Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L. The lens is also pretty unique, as Ted Forbes lines out.

Canon started big with their first round of RF mount lenses for their mirrorless system. The Canon RF 50mm f/1.2 L is a seriously good lens. Its versatile enough to be very sharp, but can also shoot wide open for some gorgeous and often abstract bokeh rendering. Building on the EF 50mm f/1.2, Canon corrected many of the aberrations and give us a sharper, high resolving lens. This does come with some tradeoffs – this lens is big. Its also very heavy and the price is not cheap. But if you’re willing to sacrifice some of the conveniences of portability for image quality – this lens is well worth the entry price.

Its also worth noting at the time I’m filming this – there is no equivalent to this lens in any mirrorless system. Nikon only have a 50mm f/1.8 and Sony have several options – but only at f/1.8 and f/1.4. This is a unique lens with a beautiful rendering and performance.

Enjoy the video, and thanks for being here and reading.

Canon 2019 Financials – EOS R With New Sensor, Image Processor, Advanced Features Under Development

EOS R

Canon published their financial results for 2019. And there are some interesting statements about the EOS R roadmap to find in the documents.

Canon takes the EOS R full frame mirrorless system very seriously.

In Imaging System, sales and profit also declined. While we enhanced our lineup in order to recover the ground we lost by entering the mirrorless camera market late, our camera business was negatively impacted by market contraction and the intensely competitive environment.

Yep, you were a bit late Canon. But we are willing to forget and forgive. Especially if you make us lusting for gear with statements like this (emphasis mine):

Although we have launched two full-frame mirrorless cameras as well as ten dedicated lenses, our lineup is still insufficient. In order to recover from our late entry into the mirrorless camera market, we have plans to launch a model that incorporates a newly developed image sensor and image-processing engine that offer even more advanced features. We will work to raise our presence in the mirrorless camera category, leveraging
large trade exhibitions around the world. Even amid increasing competition, we will expand sales of higher-end models driven by new products and aim for top market share even in the mirrorless camera market.

Ok, so if got it right an EOS R model with a newly developed sensor, a newly developed image processor and with advanced features is under development. We say “under development” because if Canon mentions it in their financial strategy papers, it can’t be that far away. And guess what? There is more. What about new lenses?

At the same time, we will expand our lineup of dedicated lenses launching several innovative ones that take advantage of the new mount that allows greater flexibility when designing lenses. We will accelerate sales by responding to user need to capture various images, expanding options by combining camera bodies and lenses.

Needless to say how good this sounds in the ears of a Canon aficionado. Maybe this advanced EOS R camera is one of the upcoming models?

Canon Rumor: An RF 100-500mm Lens For The EOS R Might Get Released This Year

Canon Rumor Kazuto Ogawa

A new Canon rumor came up. There are reasons to believe that Canon will release one more lens after the RF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.

The second lens for the Canon EOS R system that might get announced in 2020 is rumored to be the RF 100-500mm. For the time of writing, we don’t know if it will be an “L” lens (expensive) or a more budget-oriented one. I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes as an “L” lens.

No specifications have leaked so far for the RF 100-500mm. However, if the rumor is reliable then we will soon see images and specs.

In case you missed yesterday’s bunch of new Canon rumors, here they are listed for you:

Stay tuned for the next Canon rumor.

Canon EOS R5 Rumor: Updated Specification List (45MP confirmed)

Canon EOS R With Aps-c

Here is a new Canon EOS R5 Rumor. The EOS R5 was previously rumored as “EOS Rs”. We expect the Canon EOS R5 to get announced February 13, 2020.

A few days ago a specification list for the Canon EOS R5 emerged. While there were some plausible features listed, other specs look too good to be true (especially the video features).

Now we have a slightly corrected specification list coming from the same source. Have a look below (the more reliable/plausible specifications are in bold):

  • It will be named Canon EOS R5
  • 45mp full frame CMOS sensor
  • IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation)
    • 5 stops with IBIS alone
    • 7-8 stops of correction when used with in-lens stabilization
  • 12fps mechanical, 20fps electronic
  • Scroll wheel added to the back
  • No touch bar
  • Liveview/Movie toggle like previous EOS DSLRs
  • Larger capacity battery, but looks like the LP-E6
  • 8K@30fps RAW
  • 4K@120fps
  • 4K@60fps
  • Built-in 5GHz WiFi
  • New battery, but the same shape and compatibility as the EOS 5D Mark IV
  • Announcement ahead of CP+ next month
  • Shipping in July 2020

We are still a bit puzzled by the 4K video at 120 fps, and also about the 8K raw video. This can only come with a crop factor in our opinion. On the other hand, our own sources confirmed the sensor resolution to be 45MP, so I guess this one should be safe now. This new specification list pretty much differs from a previous spec list coming from the same source.

The Canon EOS R5 would be the first of three rumored new Canon EOS R bodies to get announced this year. There is the EOS Rm, a camera rumored to be even more inexpensive and entry-level than the EOS RP (but is this possible, given that the EOS RP currently sells for less than $1,000?) And then there is this possible, third Canon EOS R camera coming in 2020. We know as good as nothing about this one. Will this one be a sports camera? Or is this just the EOS R Mark II?

It’s getting hot and hotter, folks. A Canon EOS R5 announcement before CP+ Show means there will be more leaks and also images very soon. So, stay tuned for the next Canon EOS R5 rumor.

Canon Rumor: EOS R Camera With APS-C Sensor Mentioned Again

Canon Rumor Canon EOS Webcam Utility

While we are still skeptical about this Canon rumor, we are less than we were before Nikon announced the Z 50.

But then: Nikon doesn’t have an established mirrorless lineup with an APS-C sensor, Canon has the EOS M. So, does an EOS R model with a crop sensor make any sense for Canon? It might, if you consider that an APS-C EOS R model could indeed replace the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. And still we have doubts.

The source of the rumor seems to be pretty confident about such a camera. Its suggested an EOS R model with an APS-C sensor is in active development and might be released in 2021. Not earlier because Canon is set to first deliver more RF lenses. The source says lenses for the APS-C EOS R would be RF-S lenses.

And what about this year, any EOS R cameras coming? Yes, three of them are rumored. The first one, named EOS Rs by the rumor mills, should be announced pretty soon. The second one, named EOS Rm by the rumor mills, might get announced in May 2020. And there is what could be the EOS R Mark II, but we know nothing about this one.

Stay tuned for the next Canon rumor (all listed here).

What do you think, is a Canon EOS R body with an APS-C sensor a real thing?

Do you think Canon will release an EOS R model with APS-C sensor?
