This is how a disassembled Canon EOS R camera looks like

Roger Cicala of Lens Rentals tore apart another piece of photographic gear. This time its the Canon EOS R’s turn to get disassembled.

Roger Cicala says:

It was rather a boring disassembly, really, about what we should expect for Canon doing a Canon 6D Mark II quality mirrorless camera. It’s neatly laid out and nicely engineered inside. One thing that struck me is that it’s not very crowded inside there, or as we like to say ‘they left a lot of air inside’.

This view that I haven’t shown you yet, kind of illustrates that; there’s a pretty big gap between the circuit boards and the image sensor. If you look back at the Sony A7R III teardown […] you’ll notice there’s not that much space inside; it’s taken up by the IBIS system which is big and thick.

There is an interesting statement by Mr. Cicala about future Canon EOS R models eventually having IBIS (In Body Image Stabilisation). He doesn’t think there will ever be an EOS R with IBIS:

Canon has been very clear that they think lens stabilization is superior. The space [the ‘air inside’ mentioned above, editor’s note] is probably just a matter of ergonomics and perhaps heat diffusion. But there’s certainly room for it.

The Canon EOS R teardown comes with a huge set of images, documenting any stage of the disassembly process along with descriptions. See the whole teardown at Lens Rentals Blog.

Two New Canon EOS R Cameras Coming in 2019 (entry-level and professional)?

canon eos r

Is Canon set to announce two Canon EOS R cameras in 2019? It’s likely.

We already reported a rumor we got, stating Canon will announce a high resolution EOS R camera, i.e. a EOS R body with a sensor resolution around 50MP. This rumor was indirectly confirmed by a Canon exec in an interview.

The rumor that surfaced a few days ago differs somewhat from what we have been told. It’s suggested Canon will announce a more entry-level oriented EOS R camera, positioned below the actual Canon EOS R, and then a more professional EOS R body that’s close to the EOS-1D X Mark II. The former should be announced first, the latter will be build for speed and video. However, the more “professional” EOS R might also be the high resolution model we told you about.

Rumors about Canon’s plans with the EOS R lineup abound on the web, This rumor comes from the more reliable spots on the Internet. We think there is high probability it’s going to happen. Both an entry-level and a professional EOS R body are also what we expect Canon to deliver in the next year(s).

This has to be categorised under “good and hot news”.

Viltrox will soon release a 0.71x speed booster for the Canon EOS M system. If you do not know what a speed booster does have a look at the short video below by Kinotika. Spoiler: your APS-C EOS M will perform close to a full frame camera. Who needs a Canon EOS R?

Canon Patent Application for 18-55mm Lens With Variable Field Curvature

canon patent

Japanese blog Hi Lows Note spotted another interesting patent (2018-159876).

The patent literature describes a 18-55mm lens with variable field curvature and spherical aberrations reduction.

This appears to be a lens with a design suited for an APS-C mirrorless camera. May this come to the EOS M system one day?

  • Zoom ratio: 2.88
  • Focal length: 18.58 – 53.49 mm
  • F number: 3.56 – 5.87
  • Angle of view: 36.32 – 14.32
  • Image height: 13.66 mm
  • Lens length: 126.24 mm
  • Back focus: 11.55 mm

There is a lot of buzz around patents. Mostly for nothing. Patents are foremost a way companies have to secure their R&D efforts (research and development).

More Canon patent applications are listed here. Some particularly interesting patent applications we think might get into production in the next years are these:

Is The Next, Higher Tier Canon EOS R Coming in Q1 2019? [CW2]

Rumor has it that Canon might announce a “full-blown” EOS R camera around February 2019, ahead of Photokina 2019.

We recommend you take it with a huge grain of salt. While entirely possible, we have some doubts and didn’t get any hint let alone a confirmation from our sources.

There are no specifications at this point and we also have a bit of a hard time to figure out what a “full-blown” EOS R might be. Something on EOS-1D X Mark II level?

What we know is that Canon is set to announce three new RF lenses in 2019.

Stay tuned.
