Canon EOS M50 review (surprising camera, Photography Blog)

Canon EOS M50

Canon EOS M50 at a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • UHD 4K and HD 720p120 Video Recording
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • ISO 100-25600, Extended ISO 51200
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

The folks at Photography Blog reviewed the new Canon EOS M50, the company’s first consumer camera with 4K video.

From the conclusion:

Canon’s latest mirrorless camera is a curious beast, on the one hand offering several headline-grabbing features that promise to out-perform the company’s own flagship model, whilst on the other falling short of its full potential.

What could have been a vlogger’s dream ticket, for example, falls well short of the pre-release hype thanks to a crippled 4K mode. Canon made lots of noise about the camera’s 4K capability, but “forgot” to mention several important caveats that render it at best difficult to use, at worse almost impossible. As the first Canon mirrorless camera to offer 4K recording, the EOS M50 is simply a disappointment.

[…] In summary, the Canon EOS M50 is a surprising camera. It’s surprisingly capable for what is after all only a “mid-range” camera, but unfortunately it also surprisingly under-performs in a few key areas, which may make or break its potential appeal. Read the review…

Off Brand: Nikon’s upcoming mirrorless cameras leaked through certification authority

Mirrorless Cameras

It seems three upcoming Nikon mirrorless cameras leaked through an Indonesian certification authority, according to Nokishita.

  • Equipment: Digital camera
  • Brand: Nikon
  • Model: N1711

No idea if Nikon’s future full frame mirrorless camera is among these three cameras. An announcement will most likely come not earlier than September 2018, if not later.

Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera may also already have leaked through certification authorities. Here too, an announcement is expected not earlier than September, or in early 2019 before Photokina 2019 (which happens in May)

DPReview posted their full Canon EOS M50 review. Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, and the first featuring 4K video, gets another quite positive review.

From the conclusion:

At first glance, the Canon EOS M50 could pass for a smaller, less expensive version of the company’s EOS M5. Despite the surface similarities, the real changes are inside. The M50 is the first Canon camera to use the Digic 8 processor and the only non-pro model to support 4K video capture. The M50 also has an improved version of its Dual Pixel AF system, a new Raw format and improved wireless functionality.

The M50 is a camera that anyone can pick up and use

The M50 sits in a category best called ‘entry-level plus’, which are relatively inexpensive and easy-to-use cameras for those who want something better than their smartphone. Its peers range from Micro Four Thirds cameras from Olympus and Panasonic to those with larger APS-C sensors from Sony and Fujifilm. Read the review…

A cute little camera, the Canon EOS M50, especially for the vlogging crowd.

Future Canon Mirrorless Cameras may have a new kind of flip screen, patent application suggests

Patent Application

Japanese patent application 2018-54913 describes an articulating touchscreen that can rotate in various directions. Reducing the size of the mechanism seems to be one of the described claims.

Machine translated patent literature excerpt:

A display device having a display portion includes a first plate, a first shaft rotatably supporting the first plate, a second plate, a first plate provided on the first plate, A second shaft rotatably supporting the second plate rotatably in a direction substantially parallel to the first plate and the second plate, a third plate, a third plate provided on the second plate, and a third plate provided on the second plate and extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the first axis and the second axis And a third shaft rotatably journalled, wherein the second shaft is provided at one end portion of the first plate and substantially at the center portion of the second plate, and the second plate is formed of a first And the second shaft is pivotally supported by the second shaft at a substantially central portion of the display portion in a direction substantially parallel to the third axis in a state where the plate, the second plate, and the third plate are overlapped with each other.

As you can already see from the images, the display can be articulated to the side (on a vertical axis) and from the bottom of the camera (horizontal axis).

These are not the specifications for Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera

Canon EOS M50

A list of specifications for the upcoming Canon full frame mirrorless camera is making its rounds over the web.

Our sources told us these specs are total crap, they have nothing to do with Canon’s FF MILC (same source that delivered EOS M50 pics before the announcement). While some of the stuff listed below may find its way into the long rumored Canon FF MILC, it remains a totally unreliable rumor.

The Canon FF MILC specification list making its rounds:

  • Look & Feel: large grip with top LCD, very comfortable to hold; dials are very similar to those we found on the EOS 5D Mark IV.
  • Side articulating screen
  • Sensor: Upgraded version of the EOS 5D Mark IV sensor, obviously includes DPAF.
  • Frame rate: 10FPS
  • Silent shutter and 1/16000sec shutter speed is available
  • Focus control is very similar to EOS 5D Mark IV’s 61-pt AF system.
  • Dual SD card slots
  • Video Features: C-Log 1/2/3, Focus Guide
  • Formats available: 60p/30p/24p 4K (both DCI & UHD can be chosen).
  • FHD 120p
  • Weight: not very light, but similar to Sony A7 but a bit larger due to the big grip.

I think I’ve seldom seen a rumor so much abused like the Canon full frame mirrorless rumor. Besides all the murmuring and rumor-recycling, we know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

At the end of the day, there is just one thing we can be sure about: Canon is set to announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year. Here at CW we know since a while and reported it. Even Sony’s CEO said that Canon will announce a FF mirrorless before Q1 2019.

Given the traffic-making qualities of the Canon FF MILC rumor, I fear we will see and hear a lot of crap before we have something reliable.

Stay tuned, we keep you posted with the important stuff.

Canon EOS M50 review (excellent color reproduction, ePhotozine)

ePhotozine reviewed Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors), the company’s first consumer cam featuring 4K video.

In the conclusion they write:

The Canon EOS M50 offers a compact, DSLR styled mirrorless camera, with an updated 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor, which gives excellent image quality, with the same excellent colour reproduction that you get with Canon EOS DSLRs. You also get high-speed continuous shooting, 143 focus points, and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder. It’s also one of the cheapest Canon cameras to record 4K video, and the side mic socket will make it appealing for those who want to record video.

If you want to use Canon EF lenses, with an adapter, on a smaller camera body, or want to use one of the EF-M lenses, then the Canon EOS M50 is a compact option with great levels of performance, and is an enjoyable camera to use. It’s just frustrating that in order to get the best from the camera you have to use the EOS-EF-M adapter, due to the lack of native Canon EF-M lenses available. Read the review…
