Fujifilm expects Canon (and Nikon) to loose 50% market share within 2021, internal memo

fujifilm

Over at Fuji Rumors they got what appears to be an internal Fujifilm document, not expected to hit the public.

What is this document saying?

[…] within 2021, Fujifilm predicts a decrease in market share for Canon and Nikon of 50%

This seems to be the result from internal studies by Fujifilm Japan. The same Fujifilm document predicts a steady growth for Fujifilm.

I don’t know how realistic it is that Canon’s and Nikon’s market share will decrease by 50% in the next 3 years. That’s would hit Canon and Nikon hard, I guess.

Moreover, if Canon (and Nikon) will eventually announced their full frame mirrorless camera I expect they to get a stronger grip on the mirrorless market and not necessarily to loose market shares. I guess it’s Sony and Fujifilm to worry about what Canon, given their tech know how and engineering skills, may launch mirrorless-wise in the next 8-12 months.

Exciting times, stay tuned.

Another take on Canon’s and Nikon’s full frame mirrorless plans

full frame mirrorless

FroKnowsPhoto (aka Jared Polin) shares his opinion and view on what Canon and Nikon will feature on their long rumored full frame mirrorless cameras. And obviously: how will they compare to Sony’s technology and offering? And how will Sony counter?

We expect Canon to announce their full frame mirrorless camera within the next 8 to 12 months. For the latest about it see here.

Stay tuned.

Nikon Exec confirms: Full Frame Mirrorless by Spring 2019

Full Frame Mirrorless

In an interview with Japanese TV-channel NHK, a Nikon manager confirmed the company’s new mirrorless camera system will be on the market by spring 2019. And Canon?

Besides all the more or less reliable rumors floating around, you can bet Canon will be there when Nikon is. Both companies have entered the mirrorless market late, and didn’t so far really compete with the likes of Sony and Fuji. But Canon and Nikon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera may change it all.

Bot Nikon and Canon have the technology and engineering skills to build a mirrorless camera that could lead the industry. They just did not so far. Cannibalisation of their own products is often cited as the reason Nikon and Canon did not develop (so far) serious resources and knowledge to build a class leading mirrorless camera.

Take everything you hear about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera with a huge grain of salt. This is likely the most abused Canon rumor ever.

We expect the announcement of Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera somewhen between September 2018 and May 2019.

Our latest Canon full frame mirrorless rumor and what we expect can be seen here. All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.

Off Brand: Nikon working on full frame mirrorless camera with “rapid pace”, report suggests

nikon z 6 mark iii full frame mirrorless camera nikon rumors

Japanese business news site SankeiBiz reports that Nikon is working on a professional mirrorless camera with “rapid pace”. The announcement is expected before March 2019.

So what about Canon? Beside all the more or less reliable rumors, it appears that so far the most reliable intel came from Sony’s CEO, who months ago clearly said he believes that both Nikon and Canon are working on a full frame mirrorless camera. I guess the man knows what he is talking about.

Some rumor outlets are suggesting there may be a “development announcement” concerning a full frame mirrorless camera from Canon at Photokina 2018. We do not believe that (and got no hints for it). And we are not yet sure if Canon’s long rumored full frame mirrorless camera will be released to the general public in 2018 (Q1 2019 seems more likely).

Most likely Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera has already leaked through certification authorities. Still, we have no hints about the specifications, or the mount type.

Despite all the murmuring and rumor-recycling, we know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed to us so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

At the end of the day, there is just one thing we can be sure about: Canon is set to announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year. Here at CW we know since a while and reported it. All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.

Canon EOS M50 4K vs 1080p video performance review

Canon eos m50 mark ii

Canon EOS M50 at a glance:

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 8 Image Processor
  • 2.36m-Dot OLED Electronic Viewfinder
  • 3.0″ Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD
  • UHD 4K and HD 720p120 Video Recording
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • ISO 100-25600, Extended ISO 51200

Gordon Laing from CameraLabs posted a neat 9 minutes video where he compares the Canon EOS M50‘s video performance, 4K vs 1080p. You likely know that Canon crippled 4K video mode on the EOS M50 to go without the company’s amazing Dual Pixel AF technology. Never the less, it’s Canon’s first consumer camera featuring 4K video. So let’s see.

The Canon EOS M50 is indeed getting a lot of positive reviews, not just because of the interesting price ($779). More Canon EOS M50 coverage.

Canon (and Nikon) full frame mirrorless camera prediction by Tony Northrup

full frame mirrorless

Tony & Chelsea Northrup discuss rumors and possibility of a Canon/Nikon full frame mirrorless camera.

Rumors indicate that Canon and Nikon are planning full-frame mirrorless cameras to compete with the Sony a9, a7R III, and a7 III. If you want to go mirrorless, should you wait for those announcements (hopefully in 2018!) or sell your camera and switch now? We can’t perfectly predict the future, but we’ll do our best to give you some idea of what to expect in 2018.

If you still have doubts that Canon may announced a full frame mirrorless camera, stay assured they will. Besides being the most abused Canon rumor of all times (think traffic), there have been more than enough hints that Canon (and Nikon, for that matter) will soon announce a full frame mirrorless camera. Even Sony’s CEO said that Canon will announce a FF mirrorless before Q1 2019. Still, I am sure we will see many more “breaking-news-kind” rumors seasoned with the same old stuff.

For our latest stand on Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera see this post. All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.
