ePhotozine reviewed Canon’s latest mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors), the company’s first consumer cam featuring 4K video.

In the conclusion they write:

The Canon EOS M50 offers a compact, DSLR styled mirrorless camera, with an updated 24mp APS-C CMOS sensor, which gives excellent image quality, with the same excellent colour reproduction that you get with Canon EOS DSLRs. You also get high-speed continuous shooting, 143 focus points, and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder. It’s also one of the cheapest Canon cameras to record 4K video, and the side mic socket will make it appealing for those who want to record video.

If you want to use Canon EF lenses, with an adapter, on a smaller camera body, or want to use one of the EF-M lenses, then the Canon EOS M50 is a compact option with great levels of performance, and is an enjoyable camera to use. It’s just frustrating that in order to get the best from the camera you have to use the EOS-EF-M adapter, due to the lack of native Canon EF-M lenses available. Read the review…

The Canon EOS M50 is now shipping, starting at $779.

Tamron says they are ready to make lenses for Canon & Nikon full frame mirrorless cameras

full frame mirrorless

In an interview with DPReview, Tamron execs gave a clear statement. Besides talking a lot about the new Tamron 28-75mm FE (canon rumors) lens for Sony systems, they said the company is ready to build lenses for future full frame mirrorless cameras. Guess who they where addressing?

[…] Everybody is going to mirrorless. Canon and Nikon will launch full-frame mirrorless cameras, probably in the near future. When this happens, we can easily make Canon and Nikon versions of our [native] E-mount lenses. The same design could work for [multiple mirrorless mounts].

Good to know that Tamron can easily convert their lenses for a soon to come full frame mirrorless system by Canon. And that Canon will deliver “probably in the near future”.  Sony execs also are quite sure Canon will announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year. And if both Nikon and Canon are going to launch such a camera things are going to be interesting.

Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera may have leaked through certification authority

Canon Rumorscanon rumors

Nokishita posted a list of unreleased Canon gear, taken from “test data” (which I guess means from a certification authority’s listing). Before you get all breathless, please keep in mind that if the gear listed below is in a development stage (i.e. prototypes) the listed specifications may not refer to the actual model (i.e. dummy specs or place fillers). However, it seems our so often copied rumors about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera got an authoritative and serious endorsment by Nokishita.

The model numbers listed below may point to the long rumored Canon full frame mirrorless camera.

  • K424 [editor’s note: this might be Canon’s FF MILC]
    • Interchangeable lens camera
    • Full size [= full frame, editor’s note]
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
    • It is described as mirrorless image size (6720 × 4480) in the test data (since the detail column is filled with almost the same data as 5D Mark IV [K349], the image size may be a dummy possibility)
  • K433
    • Interchangeable lens camera
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
    • It is described as mirrorless full size in the test data (it is the same as the data of K424, so it is possible that the initial setting data was diverted for testing)

Please note that K424 and K433 may point to the same camera, and that the listed specifications may be “dummy specs”, i.e. place fillers (according to Nokishita too). It’s not easy to guess (or understand) if the models above really point to Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. However, given the reliability of Nokishita we consider it a strong possibility.

The list goes on with more unreleased Canon gear. As you can see below there are DSRls, PowerShots, and one more mirrorless cameras on Canon’s agenda (EC 811). The DSLRs may point to the EOS 90D or EOS 7D Mark III or to the replacement for the EOS 5Ds/5Ds R.

  • K436 [editor’s note: a DSLR]
    • Lens interchangeable camera (probably single lens reflex)
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
  • K437 [editor’s note: a DSLR]
    • Lens interchangeable camera (probably single lens reflex)
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
  • EC801 [editor’s note: a PowerShot]
    • Compact digital camera
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
  • EC804 [editor’s note: a PowerShot]
    • Compact digital camera
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
    • More functions than EC 801 and EC 805 (probably G series)
  • EC 805 [editor’s note: a PowerShot]
    • Compact digital camera
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed
  • EC 811 [editor’s note: a mirrorless camera]
    • Mirror-less camera
    • Wi-Fi · Bluetooth installed

The listed gear may be scheduled to be announced around Photokina 2018 (September).

What do you think, is K424 Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera?

Yet Again a Recycled Rumor Breaks the News

Canon Rumors

Again, an old rumor seasoned with some common sense made its round on the Internet, sold as breaking news. You guess, it’s about Canon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera, likely the most abused rumor since I started this site.

News outlets happily reported (again) that Canon is working on a full frame mirrorless camera, that prototypes are out, and that we will see this camera within a year. Well, nothing new here. People following CW knows that. We are reporting every bit we get about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera since 2014. It’s a pity that some big news outlets stubbornly ignore us.

The non-rumor we are talking about (which you shouldn’t have issues to find) states that

  1. A Canon full frame mirrorless camera is coming – We know that since almost 2 years, we extensively reported about
  2. Prototypes of a Canon full frame mirrorless camera are undergoing field tests – We know that since over a year, we reported many times
  3. Canon may announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year – We know since a while and reported it. Even Sony’s CEO said that Canon will announce a FF mirrorless within a year. Anyone involved in photography on this terraqueous globe of ours knows it.

If you have ever worked in R&D (Research & Development) then you know that prototypes (of electronic gear) are field-tested a long time before the final product goes to market, and that usually there are more versions of such prototypes. Depending by the criticality, electronic gear like digital cameras may be tested through prototypes years before it is announced. I am sure an important camera like Canon’s (hopefully) upcoming FF MILC has seen many prototypes coming and going, and not since a few months. And one more thing: the scope of prototypes is to get it right in the final product.

Besides all the murmuring and rumor-recycling, we know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed so far:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

Stay tuned, we keep you posted with the important stuff.

TheCameraStoreTV‘s Chris Niccolls reviews the new Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors), the company’s latest effort to get a grip in the mirrorless market, and Canon’s first consumer camera with 4K video recording. These guys are serious reviewers, so watch and listen to learn what counts and what not in this relatively inexpensive yet feature packed little camera.

It seems the EOS M50 appeals a lot to the vlogging crowd, despite the fact Canon decided to deliver 4K video without the benefits of Dual Pixel Auto Focus (they clearly said it’s because of the EOS M50’s market segment). Then again, the EOS M50 has eye tracking AF, which is a pretty cool feature (well explained in the video). Spoiler: color and image quality out of the camera are excellent, and there are many more surprising features (like compressed raw files). And there are shortcomings. Watch Chris Niccolls while he critically analyses the EOS M50.

The Canon EOS M50 can be pre-ordered and is expected to ship on Monday, March 26, 2018, starting at $779.

Another review to learn if the Canon EOS M50 (canon rumors) is the best vlogging camera for those on a budget.

Cinema5D reviewed the new EOS M50, and writes:

The Canon EOS M50 is a nice, powerful and affordable little entry-level camera for people who want an interchangeable lens camera without having to schlepp around a huge amount of kit. The video function is very good mainly because of the incredible Dual Pixel Autofocus in HD, but the 4K is clearly an afterthought and can’t really be used in practice much because of the crop and the lacking Dual-Pixel AF. The main purpose of this camera will be uncomplicated family shots or vlogging, for both of which HD is enough. It can be used for entry-level filmmakers who want to start working with interchangeable lenses, as long as they are happy with a 1080p output. Read the review.
