Mirrorless Cameras may definitely take over in 2019, Thom Hogan states (and yet another poll)

Canon Eos M5 Mark Ii Mirrorless

As antidote to the more noisy and breathless rumor outlets out there, have a look at Thom Hogan’s short and educated article about the evolution (past and future) of mirrorless camera systems.

Mirrorless initially looked like it was going to quickly erode DSLR unit volume back in 2012. That proved to be a false positive. Mirrorless was still nascent, Nikon was heavily promoting the Nikon 1 because they couldn’t make DSLRs due to the quake and flood (and already discounting the Nikon 1), and there was a lot of sampling going on to see if mirrorless truly was the future of interchangeable lens cameras. Frankly, no, it wasn’t yet ready back then.

[…]

Compare that to today. Let’s use Canon as an example. You’d be hard pressed to show me how an entry Rebel DSLR is better than an EOS M5. After all, they’re using the same sensor. The Rebel is bigger, heavier, bulkier. It doesn’t do as well with face recognition autofocus, a big thing for the masses. In other words, most of the things that led samplers in 2012 to say “not ready yet” are no longer applicable. They can get equivalent or better results for their type of shooting out of a smaller, lighter, simpler camera now. A friend of mine says that there’s a study that shows statistical significance to European camera sales to European airline carry-on practices. As airlines tightened carry-on weight limits, people in Europe bought smaller and lighter cameras, apparently. Read Thom Hogan’s article…

There are some good points in Hogan’s article.

You likely know Canon will soon announce a new mirrorless camera. Some people are speculating the upcoming EOS M50 could indeed be the long-awaited full-frame mirrorless camera we are all eagerly waiting for. And now it’s also rumored to do 4K video. Sound to good to be true to me. We just had an elaborate prank with the PowerShot G7 X Mark III images. I urge to you to be more realistic. The EOS M50 is going to be announced ahead of CP+. We will soon know.

We want to learn what you think about the State of Mirrorless.

Canon sending out invites for mirrorless camera announcement next month?

Canon Eos M5 Mark Ii Mirrorless

Rumor has it Canon is sending out invites to select dealers and other people for a presentation regarding a new mirrorless camera.

As CR reports:

[…] Canon is sending out “very elaborate” invites to select dealers and VIPs for a mirrorless camera announcement next month.

The invitation was described as being very high end, printed on heavy glossy paper and showing a silhouette of a camera shaped like the EOS M6 with a hole cut out where the sensor would be.

Apparently only CEOs and higher-ups are allowed to go to the presentation, no sales people are permitted.

We know Canon is going to announce a new MILC, it’s the EOS M50. What appears to be a bit weird is an invitation with such an aura of “high end”. However, don’t let your speculations go wild. Similar suggestions showed up frequently in the past and most time didn’t turn out for good. It’s also true that the EOS M50 is a bit of a mystery for the fact that it’s hard to guess where it is placed in Canon’s mirrorless lineup. Feature-wise we suppose it’s somewhere between the EOS M5 () and the EOS M100 ().

Canon is going to announce this new gear ahead of CP+.

Stay tuned.

The Canon EOS M50 may be a midrange MILC, comes in 2 colors & 2 kits (and there is also an EOS 2000D/Rebel T7 coming)

Eos M50

Registrations of unreleased Canon gear showed up at the Eurasian Economic Commission. You can see the document above.

We already know that Canon will announce a new MILC named EOS M50. From the document above we learn the EOS M50 will come in two colors (black and white), and in two kits, respectively with the 15-45mm IS STM and the 18-150 IS STM lenses. The EOS M50 registration document can be seen here

Where will the EOS M50 be positioned in Canon’s mirrorless line-up? Given the two digits in the name, the the EOS M50 will most likely be positioned between the EOS M100 and the EOS M5/M6. A midrange MILC from Canon, so to say.

Another Canon camera was registered at the Eurasian Economic Commission, the EOS 2000D. Given that the EOS 2000D will replace the EOS 1300D (Rebel T6 in USA) it’s no surprise it comes as a kit with the  EF-S 18-55mm IS II lens. The EOS 2000D will most likely be named Rebel T7 in the States. The EOS 2000D registration document is here.

Canon EOS M100 review (phone photographers feel very at home, Cameralabs)

Eos M100

I guess there is no recent Canon camera that’s getting so much love from reviewers as the Canon EOS M100 (specifications, and price in your country), the company’s latest entry-level mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and as it appears, a well made one.

Cameralabs reviewed the EOS M100, and their opinion is not different than other (positive) reviews. Delivering DSLR image quality, Dual Pixel AF, and more DSLR-ish features on a very compact and lightweight, and beginner-friendly camera seems to be a winning formula.

From their conclusion:

The Canon EOS M100 is […] designed as a first step up from a smartphone, an introduction to ‘real’ photography […] As such it needs to get the balance right, with nothing too complex or unfamiliar, whilst at the same time providing enough control to enable newbie photographers to develop their skills. It also needs to be able to do the things a phone can do at least as well if not better and, finally, it needs some fun feature modes.

The EOS M100 manages all of those things very well. It’s compact enough to be able to slip it in your pocket and the simple control layout means anyone can pick it up and start using it straight away. The flip-up screen and selfie features combined with great connectivity make it almost as easy to share your photos and videos as if you’d shot them on your phone in the first place. It has good range of effects filters, a time-lapse movie and Hybrid movie mode and the touch screen and well designed interface will make phone photographers feel very at home. Beyond that it offers the same image quality as the more sophisticated EOS M6, the same fast and accurate Dual-pixel AF, 1080p video and respectable 6fps (4fps with Continuous AF) continuous shooting. Canon Rumors

Nokishita spotted new, unreleased Canon gear. And it gets pretty interesting.

It appears Canon has registered the Bluetooth module of a new camera at a certification authority. The new camera is named EOS M50 (Kiss M in Japan), and it definitely appears be a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.

eos m50

It’s suggested the EOS M50 might be similar to the EOS M5 but with less features. I’m a bit puzzled by the moniker “Kiss M” (for the Japanese market), which seems to suggest a more DSLR-like design. Well, this is assuming “Kiss M” and “EOS M50” refer to the same piece of gear (I think they do).

When gear is spotted at certification authorities it is usually a matter of weeks before this gear gets announced. However, I do not expect the EOS M50 to be announced in 2017. This will most likely be a 2018 announcement.

What do you think is the EOS M50? Sound off in the comment section.

DPReview published their full review of Canon’s latest beginner oriented mirrorless camera, the EOS M100, Canon’s smallest and most inexpensive mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.

Excerpts from DPReview’s conclusion:

On the whole, we consider the M100 to be a great value and incredibly user-friendly. If you’re a novice, and grow in your photography such that you find you do want to dictate some of your exposure settings, this camera also offers all the manual control you might want. […]

The Canon EOS M100 offers virtually identical image quality to the higher-end EOS M5 and M6 for hundreds of dollars less; this means that dynamic range and noise levels are competitive, if not best-in-class. […] [the EOS M100] will simply take great pictures under a wide variety of scenarios, and places very few demands on the user while doing so. It’s a camera that you just want to pick up and take with you to document your daily life.

And it’s because the M100 is such an enjoyable camera to use at a competitive price, that it encourages you to bring it with you rather than letting it languish on a shelf, and that it makes taking pictures genuinely fun, it earns our highest award. Read the review…

Canon clearly had the audience of smartphone users looking to step up in mind, and at those users they aimed the EOS M100. It’s a pity that Canon still does not deliver a real ecosystem (i,e. lenses) for their EOS M system. It must also be said that EF/EF-S lenses used with the EF/EF-M adapter and Dual Pixel AF perform very good. Still, native lenses would be better.

The EOS M100 is getting many positive reviews. Good to see that Canon did it right. You can download the EOS M100 user manual, in case you want to learn more about Canon’s latest MILC.
