Canon full-frame mirrorless camera eventually coming in 2018 with a sensor over 30MP?

Full Frame Mirrorless

The long running speculations and rumors about a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera got a new push.

I’ve been told (thanks) that 2018 may indeed be the year Canon will announce the company’s first mirrorless camera with a full-frame sensor. For sure such a camera is highly anticipated by the community.

In the past there were all sort of rumors, sometimes one contradicting the other. One of the more interesting suggestions was given to us in January, and it said Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera may have the same sensor and electronics as the EOS 6D Mark II. While this could be considered at least plausible back in January it no longer does in August. There was no announcement of a Canon full-frame mirrorless and I strongly doubt there will be one before end of 2017.

A full-frame mirrorless camera set to go to market in 2018 will not have the same internals as the EOS 6D Mark II, let alone the same sensor. Canon needs to catch up with the competition (Sony, mostly) and the high resolution sensors delivered. 2018 will be the year when Canon will start delivering image sensors with resolutions well over 30MP for all their full-frame cameras.

So, what do we know about Canon’s mirrorless camera? A few things we do:

  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is serious a chance we may see this.
  • The latest bit of info I got suggests Canon will announce a full-frame mirrorless camera with a sensor having a resolution of 36-38MP.
  • A possible announcement date is around Photokina 2018, which happens in September.
  • And for all those 4K fans out there: we have been told that, yes!, most likely it will feature 4K video.

I think the most interesting bit among the very scarce information we have so far is related to the EF mount. Given Canon’s incredible laziness in producing dedicated lenses for their EOS M system, I can only hope Canon’s engineers manage to build a mirrorless camera with EF mount.

What do you think, will we see a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera in 2018? And do you think it will have an EF mount? Sound off in the comment section, I am curious to know your thoughts.

Canon EOS M20 to be announced at the end of August, 24MP sensor? [CW3]

Eos M20

This is not a new rumor, it surfaced previously. We got a hint that Canon will announce the replacement for the Canon EOS M10 at the end of August 2017.

I can’t rate this more than CW3 for the time being, though the likelihood of an August announcement is high.

The EOS M10 is Canon’s entry-level MILC, it’s safe to assume the EOS M20 will follow in its footsteps. The moniker “EOS M20” was suggested to Canon Watch in June 2017. We also know that a Canon entry-level camera was registered at a certification authority back in May 2017. While there are still some doubts about the name, it’s sure that there will be an EOS M10 replacement.

So what about the specs? None leaked so far. The EOS M20 will not be a powerhouse, but you can assume that some of the features introduced with the EOS M5 and EOS M6 will find there way to Canon’s next entry-level MILC. The only thing I feel I can say is that it will have a 24MP sensor, like all recent Canon DSLRs and MILCs.

If an August announcement is to take seriously, then we will soon see some leaked specs and images.

Stay tuned…

Canon’s next mirrorless camera is the EOS M20, to be announced in August 2017

Eos M20

We knew Canon would release a new entry-level mirrorless camera since registration at a certification authority leaked over the web. And we anticipated it might be named EOS M20.

New rumor has it that Canon will announce the EOS M20 at the end of August 2017.

No specifications so far. Being the replacement for the EOS M10 and an entry-level MILC, it will not be a powerhouse, though some of the tech and features of the EOS M5 and EOS M6 might be on board.

Stay tuned.

Leica press release:

Leica Camera presents the Leica TL2: Perfected features and persuasive performance meet unique design.

Wetzlar, 10 July 2017. Based on the Leica TL-System, which has been continuously advanced in terms of speed, ease of handling and flexibility since its market launch, the new Leica TL2 embraces all the perfected features and leads the innovative camera concept into a new generation with additional innovations and new design aspects. The particular hallmark of the Leica TL2 is the unusual design of its compact body. Each camera body is precisely machined from a single block of aluminium in the Leica factory. The use of premium materials and their engineering in an elaborate manufacturing process are unique in the history of camera construction and lend the Leica TL2 an unmistakeable look, feel and solidity.

Brilliant still pictures and video footage

The Leica TL2 is equipped with a newly developed, 24-megapixel CMOS sensor in APS-C format that, in combination with an equally new, Maestro II series high-performance image processor, guarantees outstanding picture quality with impressive dynamic range, excellent contrast and colour rendition, exceptional sharpness and finest resolution of details. However, the Leica TL2 impresses not only with its still picture performance, but also with its video capabilities. The camera’s various video recording modes, such as 4K (3840 x 2160p at 30 frames per second), full HD (1920 x 1080p at 60 frames per second), HD (1280 x 720p at 60 frames per second or slow motion [SLOMO] captured at 120 frames per second), leave absolutely nothing to be desired.

The Canon EOS M6 is a great camera in many respects, DPReview reports

Canon EOS M6

At a glance:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 7 Image Processor
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • Full HD 1080p Video Recording at 60 fps
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Up to 9 fps Shooting and ISO 25600
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

DPReview put the Canon EOS M6 under scrutiny and posted their full review.

According to the review, it seems the EOS M6 may become a vlogger’s favorite camera. From the conclusion:

If size is an ultimate priority, the M6 is a promising and powerful backup or second body for the established Canon shooter. It’s the company’s smallest camera to feature its latest 24MP APS-C sensor with Dual Pixel AF, the controls and touchscreen interface are a joy and many smaller EF (and -S) lenses pair up very nicely. A combination of camera lock-up and live view lags in continuous shooting are likely to be a little off-putting for more action-oriented photographers, but otherwise, the M6 is an easy recommendation.

Many Canon cameras are favorites for vloggers due to robust face tracking and pleasing (if not supremely detailed) output, and the EOS M6 proves fairly competent when used in this regard. But there are some compromises like iffy ergo’vlog’ics, and there are plenty of other mirrorless options to consider that shoot 4K video. It must be said though, none will offer the impressively reliable and easy-to-use continuous autofocus performance that Dual Pixel AF provides. Read the review at DPReview.

Image quality analysis and tests are here. The Canon EOS M6 gets a Silver Award and an overall score of 80%.
