Some Canon mirrorless full-frame camera talk

canon rumors

Some new murmurings about the upcoming Canon mirrorless full-frame camera emerged over the web.

Although the rumor has a low credibility ranking, it is never the less interesting to see what’s suggested (some specs leaked first here on CW)

  • Canon may announce full frame mirrorless camera for Photokina 2018 (September)
  • EF mount will be native (we reported)
  • New exclusive image sensor for the camera.
  • New sensor technology required for the EF mount in a mirrorless application
  • No new “dedicated” lenses, but mirrorless will be “considered in all future EF lens design”
  • 4K video is considered a necessary feature in all full frame cameras
  • One full frame mirrorless camera body to start
  • There is testing at Canon of a more hybrid approach between DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras.

It’s difficult to discern if this is a “real rumor” (whatever that means) or if the list above is made up from logical thinking. However, each of the points above makes sense, some like native EF mount and 4K video were suggested before, and are very high on most people’s wish list.

Please note also this. 2017 is the year when Canon is supposed to eventually announce the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. While I hope there will be an EOS 6D Mark II, I also got more than one suggestion that Canon may not release the EOS 6D Mark II but instead announce a mirrorless full-frame camera.

The latest announcement rumor for the EOS 6D Mark II is July 2017, which I do not really believe to be true. We are just to close to July and still nothing reliable leaked. That’s weird.

We know very little about the EOS 6D Mark II (if there will ever be one). The list below is what was passed over to us in the last two years.

Some of the specifications above may well apply also to a mirrorless full-frame camera.

Canon EOS M6 at a glance:

  • 24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • DIGIC 7 Image Processor
  • 3.0″ 1.04m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • Full HD 1080p Video Recording at 60 fps
  • Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC, Bluetooth
  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF
  • Up to 9 fps Shooting and ISO 25600
  • Combination 5-Axis Image Stabilization

ePhotozine reviewed the Canon EOS M6, the company’s latest mirrorless ILC. From the conclusion:

[…] if you’re looking for a compact camera to compliment a range of Canon lenses you already have, then the EOS M6 with adapter, would make a good option, particularly with some of the smaller EF-S lenses. You will get the same image quality as an APS-C DSLR from Canon, and the layout of controls, menus, and options should be familiar, making the camera easy to use.

The Canon EOS M6 is a compact, and easy to use mirrorless camera, with a slowly growing range of lenses available, although it would be nice if there were more lenses available. The camera delivers good image quality, with good colour, and good skin tones and the camera has an easy to use design, with a clear touch-screen. Shooting speed has been improved, with the camera shooting at 9fps, as well as offering good focus speeds.

Is Canon mirrorless taken seriously by the company?

After reading Imaging Resource’s Dave Etchells interviewing Canon executives Go Tokura, Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi and Goshi Nakamura, I really wonder if Canon mirrorless will ever be a serious thing.

Canon’s answers to Dave Etchells questions about Canon mirrorless cameras and especially about Canon’s plans with the system and the technologoy, well, these answers are elusive and vague at best (as they were in another interview with Canon execs).

Some excerpts:

IR […] How do you see mirrorless fitting into Canon’s overall strategy generally? And are we likely to see more emphasis going forward, or do you view mirrorless as continuing to be more of a niche market rather than DSLR sales?

Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi: So in terms of how we look at the mirrorless market, I think there’s a regional variance that we can actually point out at the moment. Different regions have different penetrations in mirrorless market share.

[…] Canon offers both mirrorless and SLR products, and we will continue to do this. We will position those categories in that regard, and we would like to look at the ILC market as a whole to respond to the wide range of demands that are coming in with these two prongs.

IR: As you mentioned the mirrorless market is broadening, and with the EOS M5 Canon is now finally offering a true enthusiast-level mirrorless camera […] We’re wondering whether you see higher-end — if not professional — more enthusiast-level lenses on the roadmap for the EOS M family?

YM: I won’t be able to disclose any sort of future products, so there’s not much details that I can provide at the moment, but obviously there’s a growing demand for the enthusiast-level cameras. That’s why we’re seeing this progression of our camera series, and in a similar way we will start to see the strong demand for the lenses as well, for the enthusiast. We are looking at the market demand and seeing what sort of levels that we’re seeing, and we will probably be introducing products along with that.

Doesn’t sound exactly like “we cant wait to flood the market with high end EF-M lenses” nor it doesn’t sound as if Canon was fully committed to mirrorless (and their own EOS M system).

The interview touches more points (Dual Pixel AF, for instance) so be shure to head over to Imaging Resource to get the whole story.

Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera will have same internals as EOS 6D Mark II [CW3]

eos 6d mark iieos 6d mark ii

After yesterday’s rehash of all our EOS 6D Mark II rumors, I am glad I’ve got a new and fresh rumor. This rumor should also redefine (=nullify) a weird EOS 6D Mark II rumor I got some time ago.

I’ve been told (thanks) that the upcoming full-frame mirrorless camera we are sure Canon is working on, will have the same internals (bar the mirror box etc) as the upcoming EOS 6D Mark II. That’s to say that Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera will most likely have the same specifications as the EOS 6D Mark II. They will relate like the EOS M5 and the EOS 80D.

This rumor is credible. Building a full-frame mirrorless camera using the EOS 6D Mark II components makes a lot of sense. Taking a successful DSLR and stripping it of all the mirror box related stuff worked with the EOS M5, it will work again with the full-frame MILC. This must work fine for Canon: taking the sensor, circuits, electronics, AF etc from a DSLR and fitting everything in a mirrorless camera body.

So far, this is the rumored specification list for the EOS 6D Mark II, which we think will also apply to Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera.

  • All new sensor, rumored to have 28MP (we reported first here and here and here)
  • Dual SD slots (does not apply to MILC)
  • Tilting LCD (we reported first here)
  • Touchscreen (we reported first here)
  • DIGIC 7
  • Aiming for a sub $2000 USD body only price (we told you first here)
  • DPAF (we reported first here)
  • Possibly 4K in some capacity (we were told no 4K, 1080p 60fps instead)
  • Wifi, NFC & Wireless charging (we reported first in 2015)
  • Larger viewfinder (does not apply to MILC)
  • New AF system (we reported first here, does not apply to the MILC)

The EOS 6D Mark II is expected to be announced before Summer 2017. I not sure yet when Canon’s full-frame MILC will be announced. It may be towards the end of 2017.

More about the Canon EOS 6D Mark II rumor saying there will be a FF mirrorless instead (coming both?)

canon rumorscanon rumors

A few days ago I got a weird rumor, suggesting Canon may not release an EOS 6D Mark II, but instead launch a full-frame mirrorless camera.

I rated the rumor as CW3 for the plain reason that such a scenario is possible; maybe not likely but for sure possible. The EOS 6D Mark II is already late on schedule, and we know Canon is now seriously committed to mirrorless.

The rumor was picked up by big sites, still some people didn’t get the core message of the rumor (rumor, not report). The rumor did not suggest that there will be an EOS 6D Mark II with EVF or without mirror box. The source said there might be no EOS 6D Mark II and instead a full-frame MILC with EF mount. Well, it’s not as absurd as some people thinks.

Rumors are rumors, calling welcome rumors or rumors from long running sites as reliable, and weird ones or rumors coming from small sites as clickbait is just unfair, and entirely wrong. We all do the our best to deliver information. Most people doesn’t realise how long rumors are running on other sites. I saw a lens rumor going on for almost 10 years; was it clickbait?

Most comments on CW and mails I got, suggested that Canon might indeed release a FF MILC and the EOS 6D Mark II. In this scenario, the FF MILC could be an EOS 6D Mark II without all the tech needed for a DSLR, something like the EOS M5 vs the EOS 80D. I think this is could happen.

Back to the rating. A CW3 was appropriate. The rumor described a possible Canon strategy having a 50% likelihood to become real. There was no other intention. We report rumors when we get them, and these are always clearly tagged as rumors.

My personal take: a scenario where Canon will release the EOS 6D Mark II and, most likely some months later, a full-frame MILC, is what most likely could happen.

No Canon EOS 6D Mark II because a full-frame mirrorless camera is coming instead? [CW3]

Canon FF mirrorless camera mock-up by David Riesenberg

Weird rumor I got (thanks). It’s suggested there will be no Canon EOS 6D Mark II because Canon will launch a mirrorless camera with a full-frame sensor instead.

As weird as this rumor might appear, it’s not entirely impossible. The EOS 6D was (and still is) Canon’s entry-level DSLR to the world of full-frame cameras. Since it seems Canon started to take mirrorless seriously with the EOS M5, why should they not work on a full-featured mirrorless full-frame camera?

Moreover, rumor has it that this full-frame mirrorless camera might come with an EF mount, which would mean all Canon EF lenses can be used without adapter. If the rumor about the EF mount is reliable, it might not be worth for Canon to sell an entry-level full-frame DSLR along with a full-featured full-frame mirrorless camera.

I am pretty sure there are prototypes of a Canon full-frame mirrorless camera undergoing first tests, not necessarily on the field, more likely in a lab setting. We also know that Canon filed various patents referring to lenses for a full-frame mirrorless camera (1 | 2). On the other hand, we also spotted a patent for an EF/EF-S adapter for a full-frame mirrorless camera. That Canon is working on such a camera is almost a sure thing, we got the rumor and reported it as first site in December 2014.

So far, anything about the EOS 6D Mark II is uncertain, the few specs we got look more like speculations than real leaks, and could also well apply to a mirrorless full-frame camera (especially the suggestion about Dual Pixel AF). The possible announcement date of the EOS 6D Mark II changed almost a half dozen times, it’s now pointing to summer 2017. Put straight: no one knows a thing for sure about the EOS 6D Mark II so far.

What do you think, might Canon replace the EOS 6D with a mirrorless camera? Let’s me know what you think in the poll and the comment section.

Will Canon produce a mirrorless full-frame camera instead of the EOS 6D Mark II?

  • Canon will make both the EOS 6D Mark II and a mirrorless full-frame cam (50%, 1,163 Votes)
  • Yes, a mirrorless full-frame camera will replace the EOS 6D (28%, 644 Votes)
  • No, there will be only an EOS 6D Mark II (22%, 496 Votes)
