Another suggestion a Canon full frame mirrorless camera may be announced ahead of Photokina 2018

Canon Rumors Canon Full Frame Mirrorless

We got a bunch of mails suggesting that the announcement of the long rumored Canon full frame mirrorless camera may happen ahead of Photokina 2018, i.e. before September 2018.

An announcement around September 2018 has always been what was suggested to us, though sometimes we got some doubts. Shall we now take September 2018 again as a candidate announcement date? I do not know at the time being.

Sincerely, I really hope Canon will announce this thing asap so it’s over. Since I started this site, this is the most stressful rumor I had to deal with. Not only we get a lot of unreliable mails (i.e. absolute bs) but it’s also getting harder to discern the crap from what may indeed have some value. We are more on the conservative side, I guess, so most of the things that are suggested to us are not being published immediately, if ever.

If, and only if, an announcement in September 2018 is to expect, then there will be first serious leaks no later than end of July 2018 or beginning of August 2018. But then, there will be another Photokina in May 2019. So it’s either for the former or for the latter.

That Canon will still not have been announced their full frame mirrorless camera by Photokina 2019 (May 2019) is unrealistic. It will happen within a year at most. Maybe this is the only thing we can be somewhat sure about.

To see the latest bits we got about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera, please see here.

A lot of Canon full frame mirrorless talk, but nothing that’s new

canon rumorsCanon full frame mirrorless

There is another wave of Canon full frame mirrorless rumors rolling over the web. Nothing new to report, it’s either recycled from previous rumors or it leans towards the “wishful thinking” side.

However, latest has it that we may see a Canon full frame mirrorless camera that will not be part of Canon’s EOS system, that may be similar to an EOS 5D Mark IV but obviously without the mirror mechanism, and that it may shoot 4K video at 30/25/24 fps.

Announcement is now again suggested to happen in September 2018 (with some doubts, though). A September 2018 announcement, ready for Photokina, has always been what we were told. Never the less, we started to have some doubts about a September 2018 announcement. We only can be sure that Canon will announce their full frame mirrorless camera somewhen before May 2019. As a side note, it appears that most rumor outlets now promote a sensor resolution around 36MP, something we were too long time ago,

Besides all the noise and wishful dreaming, we still know very little about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera. All tidbits we collected and were told in the past are listed here. Please note that none of the following has been confirmed to us so far, we do not sell this as a confirmed rumor:

  • Dedicated full frame CMOS sensor, resolution around 36MP seems to be likely
  • Different sources and sites were reporting that early prototypes exist, at least to be tested inside Canon’s labs. This intel came in 2016 and early 2017.
  • Canon is possibly working on a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount. There have been rumors saying that Canon is delaying this camera because of issues in implementing the EF mount. There is a lot of talk about this. If Canon manages to engineer a full-frame mirrorless camera with EF mount, thus allowing us to use our beloved EF lenses on a smaller and hopefully performing body, it will be a winner. Imagine what you could do with a MILC that goes along with your EF lenses. There is a serious chance we may see this.
  • Announcement may come for Photokina 2018 (September), or later in 2019 Q1.

At the end of the day, there is just one thing we can be sure about: Canon is set to announce a full frame mirrorless camera within a year at most. Here at CW we know since a while and reported it. Even Sony’s CEO said that Canon will announce a FF mirrorless before Q1 2019.

All Canon full frame mirrorless rumors are listed here.

Canon EOS 90D to be announced before end of 2018?

EOS 80d Eos M5

After a while, we got a new Canon EOS 90D rumor.

Latest has it that the EOS 90D is the next DSLRs Canon is set to announce, and that this may well happen before the end of 2018.

We had contrasting rumors in the past, suggesting a 2018 announcement first and a 2019 announcement after that.

If you have a look at Wikipedia, you’ll see that the interval between Canon xxD models has been around 3 years for the latest models.

  • Canon EOS 40D – August 2007
  • Canon EOS 50D – October 2008
  • Canon EOS 60D – August 2010
  • Canon EOS 70D – July 2013
  • Canon EOS 80D – February 2016

Given the fast pace the industry is evolving, I wouldn’t be surprised if Canon decides to put the EOS 90D (all rumors) on market before the next big holiday shopping season. The Canon EOS 80D was and still is highly popular and having a replacement ready for Christmas wouldn’t hurt Canon.

However, there other candidate DSLRs for an announcement in 2018, who may not be likely but still possible.

First, we have the long rumored full frame mirrorless camera, which is alternatively rumored to be announced towards the end of 2018 (think Photokina), or in Q1 2019 (think Photokina again).

Next, there is the Canon EOS 7D Mark III (all rumors). The latest bit we got about the EOS 7D Mark III was saying we should expect an announcement between September 2018 and May 2019. Not very a exciting hint, to be honest. Personally, I’m starting to think this will be a 2019 affair.

Though less likely than the ones above, it could also be the Canon EOS 5Ds R Mark II (all rumors) that’s going to be announced in September 2018. Here too there have been contradicting suggestions about the announcement.

Stay tuned.

New Canon EF 70-200mm lenses coming in June?

EF 70-200mm

A rumor that turned out to be wrong last year is getting new heat, and some backing from news outlets.

It’s suggested that Canon may announce two new 70-200mm lenses. One is said to be the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II, the other the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III. The originator of the rumor is 100% sure about the former, and 95% sure about the latter. We are not.

The lenses that are supposed to be replaced aren’t that old. The EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II is less than eight years old, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS is about 15 years old. At least the latter can be considered ripe for substitution, and there have indeed been some serious hints it may be announced somewhen in 2018. We never heard anything about the fabled 70-200mm f2.8 IS III.

Please consider that if those lenses are scheduled to be announced in less than a month we should have seen some leaks so far, or will see them very soon. Take this with a huge amount of salt.

Stay tuned.

Possible Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III specifications surface

Powershot G7 X Mark Ii

A list off supposed specifications for the upcoming Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III surfaced over the web.

The Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III may have the following specifications:

  • 24.1mp 1″ CMOS sensor
  • 10fps
  • DIGIC 8
  • 24-100mm f/1.8-f/2.8 Lens (4.2x Optical Zoom)
  • 3″ Articulating Touchscreen
  • 4K Video at 30fps
  • 1080p Video at 60fps
  • Built in Wi-Fi, NFC & GPS
  • Announcement: 2018
  • No mention about DPAF for 4K video.

Looks a bit like wish-list to me. Also it’s somewhat hard to think that Canon will feature 4K on a PowerShot, given how reluctant they were to put it on consumer models. All in all it looks a bit to feature rich for a PowerShot camera.

An announcement towards Q4 2018 may be realistic. There is Photokina in September and Canon won’t miss this stage if they have something important or just new to display.

Stay tuned.
