Major Canon product announcement coming September 2018?

Canon Rumorscanon rumors

We have been told (thanks) that Canon is set to announce something important in September 2018.

Now, what could this be? There are some candidates. First, we have the long rumored full frame mirrorless camera, which is alternatively rumored to be announced towards the end of 2018 (think Photokina), or in Q1 2019 (think Photokina again).

Next, there is the Canon EOS 7D Mark III (all rumors). The latest bit we got about the EOS 7D Mark III was saying we should expect an announcement between September 2018 and May 2019. Not very a exciting hint, to be honest.

There is also the Canon EOS 90D (all rumors), which I expected to be announced somewhen between Q4 2018 or Q1/Q2 2019.

Finally, it could also be the Canon EOS 5Ds R Mark II (all rumors) that’s going to be announced in September 2018. Here too there have been contradicting suggestions about the announcement.

If our source is right and Canon is set for an “important, major announcement” in September 2018, I can’t see other candidates, and I don’t think it may be about a new lens.

What do you think, did I miss something? Sound off in the comment section.

One of the oldest and most reliable rumor sites out there, Sony Alpha Rumors, got a hint from a reader that a Lithuanian store has the upcoming Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens with a price tag of $1,999.

Hard to say if the price in US$ shown in an online store in Lithuania is the same price Sigma will ask in the USA. B&H Photo and Adorama still have the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art listed without any price tag. However, $1,999 may turn out to be a pretty realistic price (prediction).

It shouldn’t take much longer until the new Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG ART HSM lens will be available. B&H Photo has you notified when pre-orders are available.

Fujifilm expects Canon (and Nikon) to loose 50% market share within 2021, internal memo

Fujifilm

Over at Fuji Rumors they got what appears to be an internal Fujifilm document, not expected to hit the public.

What is this document saying?

[…] within 2021, Fujifilm predicts a decrease in market share for Canon and Nikon of 50%

This seems to be the result from internal studies by Fujifilm Japan. The same Fujifilm document predicts a steady growth for Fujifilm.

I don’t know how realistic it is that Canon’s and Nikon’s market share will decrease by 50% in the next 3 years. That’s would hit Canon and Nikon hard, I guess.

Moreover, if Canon (and Nikon) will eventually announced their full frame mirrorless camera I expect they to get a stronger grip on the mirrorless market and not necessarily to loose market shares. I guess it’s Sony and Fujifilm to worry about what Canon, given their tech know how and engineering skills, may launch mirrorless-wise in the next 8-12 months.

Exciting times, stay tuned.

Canon EOS 7D Mark III to announced between Photokina 2018 and Photokina 2019?

Eos 7d Mark Iii

Call it “rumor” but to me it looks we should call this “common sense”. We have been told (thanks) that Canon will announce the replacement for the glorious EOS 7D Mark II somewhen between Photokina 2018 (September) and Photokina 2019 (May).

There is nothing really surprising here. After a series of rumors that alternatively suggested the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019 as the most likely date for the EOS 7D Mark III announcement, this rumor isn’t telling us anything new. That Canon will announce the EOS 7D Mark III somewhen between September 2018 and May 2019 is very much just common sense.

It’s since a few years that Canon has become very secretive about their products. Reliable leaks are rare, and usually surface only a few weeks ahead of the announcement. That’s to say that we still know nothing about the EOS 7D Mark III (besides some obvious things like tiltable screen). Over the last two years we got the following bits:

  • newly developed 28MP sensor, said to introduce a new Canon APS-C sensor generation (we leaked this first)
  • more video-oriented
  • some sort of 4K video (though no details, we leaked this first)
  • tiltable touch-screen
  • new generation of Dual Pixel AF
  • more upscale than the EOS 7D Mark II
  • richer feature set compared to the 7D Mark II
  • same introductory price as the EOS 7D Mark II

So far there is only one hint that Canon may indeed announced the EOS 7D Mark III for Photokina 2018: it seems major retailers are clearing stocks of the EOS 7D Mark II.

Stay tuned.

Another take on Canon’s and Nikon’s full frame mirrorless plans

Full Frame Mirrorless

FroKnowsPhoto (aka Jared Polin) shares his opinion and view on what Canon and Nikon will feature on their long rumored full frame mirrorless cameras. And obviously: how will they compare to Sony’s technology and offering? And how will Sony counter?

We expect Canon to announce their full frame mirrorless camera within the next 8 to 12 months. For the latest about it see here.

Stay tuned.

Nikon Exec confirms: Full Frame Mirrorless by Spring 2019

Full Frame Mirrorless

In an interview with Japanese TV-channel NHK, a Nikon manager confirmed the company’s new mirrorless camera system will be on the market by spring 2019. And Canon?

Besides all the more or less reliable rumors floating around, you can bet Canon will be there when Nikon is. Both companies have entered the mirrorless market late, and didn’t so far really compete with the likes of Sony and Fuji. But Canon and Nikon’s upcoming full frame mirrorless camera may change it all.

Bot Nikon and Canon have the technology and engineering skills to build a mirrorless camera that could lead the industry. They just did not so far. Cannibalisation of their own products is often cited as the reason Nikon and Canon did not develop (so far) serious resources and knowledge to build a class leading mirrorless camera.

Take everything you hear about Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera with a huge grain of salt. This is likely the most abused Canon rumor ever.

We expect the announcement of Canon’s full frame mirrorless camera somewhen between September 2018 and May 2019.
