Future Canon PowerShot cameras rumored to feature APS-C sensors [CW3]

Next PowerShot G1 X to feature an APS-C sensor?

We reported that we were told the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III might have an APS-C sensor instead of the 1.5″ sensor used so far on the series. We got this hint from two different, albeit new sources.

A new rumor suggests that Canon may produce more PowerShot cameras with an APS-C sensor in the future.

The next iterations of the PowerShot G3 X and G5 X are named. Speculation goes that even smaller PowerShot cameras like the G9 X and G7 X series may feature an APS-C sensor, which is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

This is entirely possible. It’s since a while that people are asking (hoping) Canon would feature larger sensors in their pretty powerful and popular PowerShot cameras. However, it may also be nothing but wishful thinking. Given how much Canon likes to segment their offerings it wouldn’t be surprising if the latter hits the mark. Maybe it will happen. If it does, it would allow Canon to reenforce their market position in this category.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark III is expected to be announced soon, though I do not have a clear hint about the date. It showed up at a registration authority, and this is usually a sign that the announcement isn’t that far away.

We keep you posted, stay tuned.

First Canon EOS 5Ds R Mark II suggestions appear

Eos 5ds R Mark Ii

It was already murmured that a Canon EOS 5Ds/5Ds R replacement might come in 2018. Now some specifications appeared as well. It’s suggested that the two current 5Ds models will become one, and that working prototypes of the EOS 5Ds R Mark II are already undergoing testing.

Let’s see the specifications:

  • No low pass filter.
  • All new 60.1mp image sensor.
  • A new type of low megapixel mode.
  • 4K video (video is not a big part of the cameras design).
  • Identical body to the EOS 5D Mark IV.
  • Focus peaking present, may appear first on another DSLR.
  • Expect all the other features such as DPAF, Wifi, Touchscreen and GPS.

All in all a list of plausible specifications. That Canon will abbandon the 5Ds (with low pass filter) also makes sense. The EOS 5Ds R sold much better than its sibling with low pass filter.

The announcement may happen in Q3/Q4 2018, i.e. In over a year possibly.  Take this with a grain of salt.

Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III to be announced in September 2017?

canon rumorscanon rumors

Some vague hints came in that Canon may announce the Canon Powershot G1 X Mark III towards the end of September 2017 (thanks).

We know that there will be at least one announcement in September, it may well be the Powershot G1 X Mark III. The Powershot G1 X Mark III showed up at a registration authority, which itself is a pretty good hint that it will come soon. Some specifications also flocked in, the most intriguing being that it might have an APS-C sensor. Finally, we found a patent for a lens that could be featured on the Powershot G1 X Mark III. It’s not very much, but still.
