Canon Patent: Battery Grip That Works With Different Cameras

canon patent

Well that’s an interesting Canon patent application. One that might get into production.

Canon patent application 20200073213 (USA) describes a battery grip with adapter that fits various cameras.

From the abstract:

An accessory attachable to an image pickup apparatus through an adapter includes a body portion configured to contact the adapter, a screw engageable with a screw hole in the image pickup apparatus through a through-hole formed in the adapter, an operation unit configured to move the screw relative to the body portion. The screw is movable in a plurality of directions including a direction along an optical axis of the image pickup apparatus and a direction orthogonal to the optical axis in accordance with an operation of the operation unit by a user.

From the patent literature:

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The present invention provides an accessory and camera system, each of which is generally attachable to a plurality of types of camera bodies.

[0005] An accessory according to one aspect of the present invention attachable to an image pickup apparatus through an adapter includes a body portion configured to contact the adapter, a screw engageable with a screw hole in the image pickup apparatus through a through-hole formed in the adapter, an operation unit configured to move the screw relative to the body portion. The screw is movable in a plurality of directions including a direction along an optical axis of the image pickup apparatus and a direction orthogonal to the optical axis in accordance with an operation of the operation unit by a user. A camera system including an image pickup apparatus, and the above accessory also constitutes another aspect of the present invention.

[0006] An accessory according to another aspect of the present invention attachable between a battery grip and an image pickup apparatus includes a body portion configured to contact the image pickup apparatus, and a first positioning member configured to position relative to the image pickup apparatus. The body portion has a through-hole into which a screw of a battery grip is inserted in order to fix the battery grip to the image pickup apparatus.

Will The Canon EOS R5 Survive The Cripple Hammer?

Canon EOS R5 autofocus

So, here is another humor(ish) post about the upcoming Canon EOS R5.

The folks at Camera Conspiracies wonders if the EOS R5 will survive Canon’s cripple hammer, i.e. how much the specifications Canon revealed at the development announcement (for instance 8K video) will be reduced in their scale (for instance heavily cropped 8K).

Will the Canon Cripple Hammer let the Canon R5 leave the warehouse untouched? Or will there be a back alley battle to cripple the perfect camera? Does 8k matter? Will Canon IBIS be better than Panasonic and Olympus? Will this camera end my channel like the Fuji XT4 is attempting? Let’s find out :)

All we know so far about the EOS R5 is listed here.

Canon U.S.A. Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Wolf Restoration in Yellowstone National Park

Canon’s Longstanding Partnership with Yellowstone Forever has Supported Wildlife Research and Conservation in the Park for More Than 20 Years

MELVILLE, NY, March 3, 2020Enabling powerful research, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, celebrates the 25th anniversary of wolf restoration in Yellowstone National Park along with the company’s support for wildlife research and conservation in the park for more than 20 years. In 1995, the U.S. government restored wolves back to the park, where they had been absent for more than 70 years. Since the reintroduction, wolves have played a significant role in the park’s ecosystem and recently gray wolves have been delisted from the endangered species list in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

Eyes on Yellowstone, an education and research program, has been made possible through Canon U.S.A. Inc.’s proud sponsorship with Yellowstone Forever, the park’s official non-profit partner. Canon’s sponsorship of Yellowstone Forever contributes to important scientific research, including the Yellowstone Wolf Project, and helps break new ground in conservation, endangered species protection, and the application of cutting-edge science and technology that is essential to managing Yellowstone National Park’s delicate ecosystems and wildlife.

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS Review (best standard zoom tested so far, Optical Limits)

Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS review

Here is a Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS review. The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS is one of the “holy trinity” lenses for the Canon EOS R full frame mirrorless system.

The experts at Optical Limits (formerly known as photozone.de) posted their full Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS review.

From their conclusion:

The Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L IS is the best fast standard zoom lenses that we tested to date. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s flawless – standard zoom lenses never are. In terms of resolution, the broader center zone is superbly sharp at all relevant aperture settings. The border quality is also on a very high level. The corner quality varies a bit though. Except for the sweet spot at 50mm, the corners are a tad soft at f/2.8. However, they have recovered nicely at f/5.6 latest. These days you tend to correct the secondary characteristic via image auto-correction. However, when analyzing the raw qualities, the results reveal a couple of issues. The vignetting is rather extreme at 24mm f/2.8 for instance – and that’s despite the very large front element. Complex image distortions are also quite obvious at 24mm and there are fairly visible pincushion distortions at 70mm. Lateral CAs are quite moderate albeit not zilch. The quality of the bokeh is very good as far as general rendition is concerned but not ideal with respect to out-of-focus highlights.
