Do you remember the Canon MM100-WS multi-purpose camera? Here are some more information

MM100-WS

Someone reminds this camera?

The Canon MM100-WS is a modular, multi-purpose camera that looks pretty much like an action camera, but is not. It’s aimed mainly at industrial applications, security and surveillance.

The MM100-WS is a modular system. That means you will be able to attach batteries, screens, and probably some more stuff. Some of the pics here give a good idea about the modularity. Moreover, Canon will make the API (application programming interface) available upon request (and disclosed under NDA), so all sort of customisation will be possible for a variety of applications. Cool gear. Looks definitely similar to an action camera, and it looks sturdy too. Canon is not new to multipurpose cameras.

The folks at Cinema5D interviewed Canon’s Terunori Tajiri during Inter BEE 2017 to learn more about the Canon MM100-WS.

The Canon MM100-WS Multi-Purpose Camera features a compact body size of approximately 1.57 in (w) x 1.57 in (h) x .85 in (d). The multi-purpose module camera has a highly customizable body designed to accommodate various module solutions and features a high-level of dust and moisture resistance and durability needed for a wide range of applications. In addition, the camera is capable of capturing images in low-light environments with as little as 1 lux of illumination.

The press release is here. The Canon MM100-WS is not going to be sold to the general public, it’s a business to business product. Want one? You have to contact Canon and ask.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS review (fantastic choice, Photography Blog)

canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS

At a glance:

  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/22
  • One GMo Aspherical Element
  • Air Sphere and Fluorine Coatings
  • Ring-Type Ultrasonic Motor AF System
  • Optical Image Stabilization
  • Dust- and Water-Resistant Construction
  • Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm

Photography Blog reviewed the new Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS lens (specifications, and price in your country). And again, we have a very positive review for this lens.

From their conclusion:

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM is a fantastic choice for professionals and enthusiasts looking for a new 85mm lens to add to their arsenal. It is much, much better than the admittedly much cheaper 85mm f/1.8, and even adds some extra functionality when compared with the more expensive f/1.2 lens – particularly optical image stabilisation.

There’s arguably very few occasions when you absolutely need f/1.2 over f/1.4, so if you do a lot of shooting handheld – weddings, reportage and so on – then it probably makes more sense to go for the lens with OIS available (and it helps that it’s cheaper too).

[…]

Sharpness is excellent throughout the range, helped along by the fact that optical image stabilisation helps keep things nice and sharp even when showing at relatively slow speeds. The bokeh produced by the lens is lovely and smooth, making it ideal both for portraiture and for still life subjects. As it has such a wide aperture, it’s also a good lens to use in low light. The Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS lens, likely the most exciting Canon lens of 2017, is now in stock and ready to ship almost everywhere in the US. At the time of writing the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS is in stock and sells for $1,599 at Amazon US,  Adorama and the Canon Store (backorder). B&H Photo still has the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS on pre-order.

Off Brand News: Sony a7R III is best performing MILC at DxOMark (scores 100)

Sony A7R III

Sony A7R III at a glance:

  • 42MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
  • BIONZ X Image Processor & Front-End LSI
  • 399-Point AF System & 10 fps Shooting
  • UHD 4K30p Video with HLG & S-Log3 Gammas
  • 3.69m-Dot Tru-Finder OLED EVF
  • 3.0″ 1.44m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • 5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization
  • ISO 102400 & Pixel Shift Multi Shooting
  • Built-In Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, Dual SD Slots
  • USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C Port & PC Sync Port

The folks over at DxOMark put the Sony A7R III on their test bench. Well, the A7R III scores 100, same as the Nikon D850. Only the medium format Hasselblad X1D-50c and Pentax 645Z have a higher score (102 and 101, respectively).

From DxOMark’s conclusion:

It’s clear that the Sony A7R III has a high-performing sensor that’s capable of capturing images with a broad range of color and tone, while keeping noise well under control.

However, comparing the A7R III sensor to the Nikon D850’s reveals the advantage that the Nikon camera’s lower minimum sensitivity (ISO) value brings. Photographers who predominantly shoot in bright light or capture motionless subjects with the camera on a tripod will record the most information, be it color, tone, or detail with the Nikon D850 set to ISO 32. However, if they require values above that, the Sony A7R III sensor produces marginally better images.

Sony’s in-body 5-axis image stabilization system is widely respected, and if it achieves the 5.5 EV shutter speed compensation in the A7R III that the company claims, it would enable the camera to capture images at ISO 100 instead of at ISO 3200 (provided the subject is stationary). The Canon DSLRs with the highest DxOMark score are the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II (88) and EOS 5Ds (87). Once more, Sony is showing how well they manage to design and build image sensors.

So, Canon, have you ever heard about this company, Sony? You know, they make amazing hardware with shitty interfaces and beta software on it. But, hey!, they innovate and users love them gadgets and gear. Maybe, Canon, you should consider catching up. Maybe. Just my 2 cents.
