Canon EOS 5D Mark IV tidbits, previous suggestions surface again

Canon Eos 5d Mark Iii

New tidbits about the upcoming Canon EOS 5D Mark IV surfaced on the web. Suggestions we got in the past got another mention.

The EOS 5D Mark IV may have more than 24MP (in the past I got rumors suggesting 28MP). Another split in the EOS 5D line is also rumored (we got such a suggestion back in April 2015). Might the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R have been a test of such a split of the line-up?

The possibility that the EOS 5D Mark IV might not get announced as such (as a direct replacement for the EOS 5D Mark III) has been rumored for a while. Rumors have gone wild on this. Basically, it’s suggested Canon may replace the EOS 5D Mark III with two different models: a low resolution option with better ISO performance, and with an option that has a higher resolution sensor (28MP) and being more a “classic” replacement for the EOS 5D Mark III.

All in all, unfortunately nothing new on the EOS 5D Mark IV rumours-front. What about 4K on the EOS 5D Mark IV? 4K has been rumored for a while to be featured on the EOS 5D Mark IV. Now it is rumored to be featured on the EOS-1D X Mark II. For the time being I do not have any reliable info about this.

The new candidate date for the EOS 5D Mark IV announcement is Spring 2016. Stay tuned…

Yet another pro-level EOS M rumor (new APS-C sensor, and anything else you may wish) [CW3]

Eos M3

We had many rumors about a pro-level EOS M camera. Here is another one, surfacing at the right time.

I’ve had a hard time to assign a credibility rating to this rumor. In some ways it looks too good to be true, and it could also be seen as a sum-up of all the earlier pro-level EOS M rumors. On the other hand, it could also be real. I decided for a CW3, since anything stated in the rumor has a fair chance to be true. Given the many fake rumors that are sent around to a lot of people, I strongly recommend you take it with a big grain of salt. Let’s see what the key features of the rumored pro-level EOS M camera are:

  1. Expanding the EF-M system
  2. First ConnectedCamera device
  3. New technology sensor (APS-C)
  4. Built in EEVF viewfinder
  5. Pro level AF performance
  6. Best in class video capability
  7. Pro build quality with enhanced ergonomics
  8. Wider support for the EF lens family

As for 1), we already know that Canon will announce new EF-M lenses. Masaya Maeda himself stated it. The most liley candidate is a 35mm f/1.8 STM lens. I have no idea what 2) means. The EOS M3 has WiFi and NFC on board. No idea what a “ConnectedCamera device” means, if not WiFi and NFC. Point 3) suggests Canon may introduce a new APS-C sensor. This is not only plausible, but entirely likely. It has to be seen what we can expect by the suggested “new technology”. A higher resolution sensor with Dual Pixel AF would fit into “new technology”, so do not expect miracles on the sensor front. 4) is rumored since Canon released their first mirrorless camera. Generally speaking, points 4) to 7) seem to be informed wishful thinking. It’s what we all hope Canon will deliver with their pro-level MILC. Point 8) is interesting, since it could point to a new EF/EF-S to EF-M adapter. We spotted a pertinent patent for such an adapter, with improved AF speed.

It’s claimed the above bits come from an internal presentation. I can’t help but to me this sounds pretty much like wishful thinking. Don’t get me wrong, anything listed above may find its way into a professional Canon mirrorless camera. It’s just that it is exactly what we all were asking for, and what we are reading on the web since years, rumor after rumor. Let’s just hope it’s true and Canon will soon back it up. Another interesting point: the rumor says the alleged pro-level EOS M will be seen after the EOS M3 got an update. If I got it right, it means we will see this pro-level EOS M after Canon released the successor of the EOS M3. So, we may see two new APS-C EOS M models next year (both above the EOS M10), and one full-frame model too. It’s getting crowded.

Along with the same rumor came also a mention that the Canon EOS 6D Mark II may be announced at Photokina 2016 (in September, the 6D2 has always been rumored to be announced Q1-Q2 2016), and that Canon will extend 4K video to more devices (EOS 5D Mark IV?).

Our latest rumor concerning the EOS M system suggests Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera is delayed because of mount-related issues.

Do you think this is a reliable rumor? Your thoughts are welcome…

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II rumors floating around [CW1]

canonlogoQuestionMark2

This appears to be a try to stray fake rumors for the fun of doing it. However, our mission is to report any Canon rumor, so we won’t miss this. EOS 5Dx is the latest rumored moniker for the upcoming EOS 5D Mark IV.

The following “rumor bits” were posted in the DPReview forum:

The Digic 7 is going to be a quad core cpu which will allow 4x the processing power for high MP, high frame rate bodies. The 5DX will contain one Digic 7 and the 1DX Mark II will contain 2 Digic 7s and 1 Digic 6. The Digic 6 will be for metwring and other smaller tasks. The 1DX will have a different larger battery while the 5DX will keep going with the same.

and

This next processor from Canon will be class leading and will be much faster than whats currently out. It will have multicores. The processing power will be equivalent to a laptop from years ago.

All posts are from the same forum user, which concludes:

Keep in mind 1DX Mark II, 5DX and 6D Mark II coming out in a matter of months.

While all this sounds at least plausible, I would take it with a huge amount of salt. It’s not the first time that hoax-rumors are posted in forums. We do not expect the EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 6D Mark II to be announced in 2015, both cameras are expected in Q1 2016.

What about the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II? The EOS-1D X Mark II could indeed be announced towards the end of 2015. But will it come at the August 14th announcement? Probably not. We expect the Rebel SL2 and two lenses to get announced in August. However, the EOS-1D X just got a $700 price drop, and some people sees this as a proof for an imminent announcement.

What do you think about this rumor, whishful thinking or real thing?

All EOS-1D X Mark II rumors, all EOS 5D Mark IV rumors, all EOS 6D Mark II rumors.

No Canon EOS 5D Mark IV coming, but Canon EOS 5D X and EOS 5D Xs? [CW3]

EOS 5D Mark IVQuestionMark2
A Canon EOS 5D Mark IV rumor was posted to the DPReview forum. Quoting:

Just got off the phone.. Looks like Canon is to name the 5D Mark IV 5DX. 28 megapixels, Digic 6+-basically a souped up version of 6 just to name a few.

X branded bodies will be for event and sports photography. S will be for studio, landscape, etc

We were first to post a rumor suggesting a model split for the EOS 5D Mark III replacement. Not just one EOS 5D Mark IV model, but two models with different specialisations. Our rumor suggested an EOS 5D Mark IV and Mark IVc naming scheme. The “c” pointing to a more video-oriented model.

The new rumor seems to refer to EOS 5D X and EOS 5D Xs (or “X S”) monikers. There are some things that make sense here. The number “four” is seen as a sign for bad luck in Japan (and Asian culture). Avoiding it in a naming scheme wouldn’t be that strange after all. However, Canon made the EOS 1D Mark IV before releasing the EOS 1D X as its replacement. Using the number “four” in the naming doesn’t seem to be a big issue for Canon. The EOS 1D X is also considered the replacement for the EOS 1Ds Mark III. Using an “s” in a camera model naming isn’t something Canon started to do with the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R.

Following the rumor, the EOS 5D X might be considered the “straight” update to the EOS 5D Mark III, the EOS 5D Mark Xs a more studio-oriented model. The former being the replacement for the all-rounder the EOS 5D Mark III is, the latter being the specialised model. Nothing new about the few mentioned specs. 28MP sensor, new DIGIC processor. Consistent with past rumors.

How to relate all this to the persistent rumors about a Canon 18MP full-frame sensor in the works? Here things get complicated. I can’t really figure out that the EOS 5D Xs (i.e. the studio-oriented model) will have 18MP. On the other hand, I doubt that 18MP will be featured on Canon’s all-rounder model, the supposed EOS 5D X, given that the EOS 5D Mark III has 22MP. If this 18MP sensor exists and is part of some plans Canon have, then most likely such a sensor is going to be featured on a video-oriented DSLR. A new Canon DSLR that could also have 4k, one of the rumored features of the EOS 5D Mark III successor.

It’s hard to rate a rumor posted in a forum. Given some consistency with earlier rumors, I give it a CW3. All EOS 5D Mark IV rumors are listed here.

Curious to know what you think about all this. Feel free to let me know in the comment section.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV 18MP and 24MP test-units out in the wild [CW1] – UPDATE

eos 5d mark iv
Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Update: the same rumor was previously posted to the CR forum (thanks for the tip):

A friend of mine has just been ‘brought’ over to Canon from Nikon and is being considered as a potential tester for the 5DIV

There are multiple MP variants but the two my friend mentioned were 18mp and 24mp, with the former more a field experiment in gauging affect on AF speed, buffer management.

The 24mp seems to be the target though but 8fps seems to be out of the question.

I am no longer sure this rumor shouldn’t be considered a hoax, and I downgrade it to CW1. I wonder who is really thinking Canon will release an EOS 5D Mark IV with an 18MP sensor. However, there is a rumor that there could be two different EOS 5D Mark IV models. In other words: a model split similar to EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R.

Original post:

A new Canon EOS 5D Mark IV rumor surfaced.

It’s suggested that Canon is still undergoing tests on an 18MP and a 24MP equipped EOS 5D Mark IV. Does Canon still have to decide which sensor to build in? Furthermore, the rumor suggests the final version will feature the 24MP sensor, while “the lower MP sensor testing AF speed and buffer management issues”. What does that mean? Canon using a 5D4 with an 18MP sensor just to test and fix auto-focus and buffer issues? I can hardly see the sense of this. Why should Canon use a 5D4 version with a different sensor to test AF and buffer?

While only a few still believe the EOS 5D Mark IV will have an 18MP sensor (the EOS 5D Mark III has 22MP), it’s interesting to see that rumors about a 18MP full-frame sensor continue to surface. In my opinion it is clear (and obvious) that Canon will never ship an EOS 5D Mark IV with an 18MP sensor. But given how often such a sensor gets mentioned, I believe Canon has something with a full-frame 18MP sensor in the works.

Finally, the rumor suggests max 8fps burst rate, and reconfirms the expected announcement in Q1 2016. Not sure how to classify this rumor. CW2 should be fine since there is neither something unheard nor something particularly convincing in this rumor. See all Canon EOS 5D Mark IV rumors here.

About our rumour rating:

  • CW1 – probably fake rumor, not reliable (less than 15% chance to be real)
  • CW2 – rumor from an unknown/new source, but otherwise at least a plausible rumor (15%-40% chance to be real)
  • CW3 – around 50% chance to be real, coming from a known source, or from new source with good insight in Canon’s business
  • CW4 – rumor from a known source that was right in the past, high probability to be true (60%-80% chance to be real)
  • CW5 – as good as certain to be true
